A thread for moaning about the cost of everything

Just 4 years ago I could get my hair done and nails done for £70 all in all.

It’s now £135 for both of these. Double.
(I understand cost of living drives up the prices for people who are self employed, and I’m not blaming them individually for it)

Bills are up so much this month. The price of everything is just horrendous and I don’t know how some people manage!

I was talking to an older colleague, whos children are grown up, earlier about a trip I had taken with DD to an aquarium this week. I told her tickets were £25 and she thought I meant a family ticket but I said no, each £25. She couldn't believe it could be so expensive for a family to visit just one place.

I wanna take the kids on a day out on Saturday. Looking at Eureka in Halifax.

£17 each per entry. That does last a whole year TBF but we don’t actually live near Halifax (going because the train station is conveniently next to the museum and there’s a direct train from us so it’s easy to get to) so probably won’t go again within the year. i really wish they’d just do a day pass as that almost £70 before I’ve even got snacks, drinks, lunch/dinner etc. I have a family and friends railcard so that’s only £21 return on the train (saving about £15 on fuel). The day out will cost well over £100 and TBH I’m asking myself if it’s worth it

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 14:36

Our hygienist is £ 90 now and 25 something for the NHS dentist. I know I'm lucky to still have one.
Car insurance and car road taxes have really gone up a lot.

I never have my nails done, but the last time I had my hair done at a salon (pre covid) it cost £120 then for a cut and colour. This was just a little local place, a proper salon would charge more. £90 seems comparatively "cheap" to me. I imagine around my way it's £150+ now. Part of the reason I no longer go!

The stupidest thing I had a god that's expensive moment over recently, was buying a small box of paxo stuffing for a rare roast. £2.65 in tescos! Nearly £3 for stuffing! I swear it was no more than £1.50 before.

I generally do online grocery shopping. Usually just for me and the cats! And I can easily spend £80-£100 a week on not very much. By the time I've bought the cat food, litter, household bits like washing powder etc, that's a chunk gone already. Before I even start on food. I'm just lucky my DC are grown up/independent. As if I had to feed them too, I'd be really struggling.

LauderSyme · 10/04/2024 14:39

The price of newspapers is astronomical these days. The Guardian is nearly £3 a day. So instead I have the Guardian app and pay £10 per month as a supporter. You can read it online for free but I think they do great investigative reporting so am happy to pay something.

I cancelled our Disney Plus subscription recently. When we first got it 3 years ago I paid £60 per annum. They wanted £110 for it this year. Nope.

HappierTimesAhead · 10/04/2024 14:40

It's so depressing. People are cutting back on things though. That is clear from these threads. So will that eventually have an impact and some prices will start to come down or AIBU and it's a case of 'there will always be people willing to pay'?

FWIW my hair is £130
I hate paying that much but my hair makes me feel so much better about myself.

No Eureka is not worth it for 1 day. Can you get to Manchester? The science museum is free.

idontlikealdi · 10/04/2024 14:42

I don't actually think the Premier Inn price is that bad just over £100 per night for 4?

Suchardchoccy · 10/04/2024 14:45

The amount of people on here moaning about the price of subscriptions and BRANDED food going up. Just buy the supermarket own brands, it is LITERALLY the same thing 😂 even the essential ranges in supermarkets are creeping up, so why buy branded??

I agree with you for most things but some branded things are different. Plus, if you work hard you deserve to be able to buy what you could afford only several years ago

We have just got back from a premier inn. We stayed for a few nights and it cost over £500!!! Room was dirty and the breakfast buffet was mouldy and inedible.

Mouldy? Sure, it’s not the best food but without some pics that’s pretty unbelievable.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 14:48

My hairdresser always looks embarrassed at the till!
I know she works from home for her relatives and friends , but renting a chair at a salon means she is stuck with their prices for the days she's there.
I don't like people in the home as they don't sweep up after them and you have to wash your own hair. Only had some one in once though, I'm sure it works for many and is cheaper and some might clear up afterwards

HappierTimesAhead · 10/04/2024 14:49

@Suchardchoccy yes although I shop in lidl and sometimes the quality is so poor (vegetables) that I wonder if it's really worth it. Plus prices are going up even in the cheaper supermarkets and on non-branded stuff.

MidnightMeltdown · 10/04/2024 14:49

Tv licence due for renewal next month. Pretty much £170 now. I don't even watch tv very often.

MyNameIsFine · 10/04/2024 14:52

idontlikealdi · 10/04/2024 14:29

Mine is £150 for a cut a t section and that's with a stylist, not even senior.

Gosh! It's years since I had highlights. Didn't realise it had got that expensive! No wonder so many of us are just going grey and getting on with it 😁

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 10/04/2024 14:53

Speaking of vet bills. Took my dog for his librela £105 had it with the nurse so paid nurse consultation fee £27, thought I’d get his nails clipped £50!!!!!!!!!!!! The groomer comes to the house and does it for a tenner! Silly me!

Suchardchoccy · 10/04/2024 14:56

@FlyingSoap we shop in aldi mainly, asda if we need a delivery but we obviously buy asda own brand and essentials, most of the things we buy are at least just as good if not sometimes better than the brands IMO. Especially aldi, they always out do the brands they are mimicking which is embarrassing. Things i have tried that are branded that i can compare anyway. Obviously everything is going up ridiculously high so i agree we should be able to not have to worry about buying the cheapest version but branded eggs fgs 😭

@HappierTimesAhead i have to say, ive tried lidl and i think the quality is very poor, especially compared to aldi and they are the same price wise i think

And it annoys me that they have made it £169.50 to try to disguise the fact that they are pretty much charging £170.

Desecratedcoconut · 10/04/2024 14:59

I think Lidl and Aldi are highly store dependant. Our Aldi is crap for fruit and veg whereas the local Lidl is reliably good.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 15:00

I like the foam box dyes ( can only buy on line these days ) for 9.99. Easier to put on.
It's nearly £50 for 15 T foils in the salon.

Thethruththewholetruth · 10/04/2024 15:01

Have to agree on TV licence. I’m not renewing, I tend to only watch Netflix and prime anyway. Not paying £14 a month for bbc etc

Augustus40 · 10/04/2024 15:02

I have stopped shelling out for pedicures these days and have learnt to do my own toenails myself with pleasing results. I have a foot file plus nail scissors also.

In addition I have been trimming and thinning my own hair over the past 12 months with a great hairdressing set off Ebay. Am very satisfied with it. It cost me c £15 and has saved me a ton of cash. As for hair colouring I have always dyed mine at home anyway plus cheap as chips.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/04/2024 15:03

Just had a family member staying with me and she was delighted at how cheap eating out here is and the price of food ,they said it's really expensive in America.

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 15:05

It used to be cheap to eat in America , am surprised it's now expensive.
Mind you, I last went in the 90s

Anjelika · 10/04/2024 15:06

Next!! My go-to shop for reasonable priced clothes. Had a look at their New in section this week and a nice dress is now around £60 as opposed to the usual £30.
