How much would you spend on a single item?

Just curious really.
I earn a semi decent salary. More than average but not more than £50,000 so not high, but I'm single with no kids so I have a fair bit left after bills etc.
I was watching a documentary where someone said they'd had a £30,000 ring stolen and I was blown away! I cannot ever imagine spending that amount on a personal item! Obviously this person was very rich but I wouldn't spend that no matter how rich I was.
I'm not frugal at all as I believe life is for living and if you want something you should buy it. But really the most I've ever spent on clothing or jewellery for a single item is £200 and I thought that was expensive!
I understand people with higher incomes would/could spend more. So it just made me wonder...
What's your most extravagant purchase? Not including cars or houses obviously!

I bought a pair of Jimmy Choo boots for £330 they should have cost over a grand as a Christmas present to myself. I haven't worn them yet.......

honeyandfizz · 10/04/2024 17:58

@CommeIlFaut Wow!

tommyhoundmum · 10/04/2024 17:59

My most expensive item over recent years has been my teeth.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 10/04/2024 18:05

Handbag 7k … it’s a Birkin and I love it.

1mabon · 10/04/2024 18:07

Liverpool people might say you are skinny.

We have several bicycles which cost several thousand pounds, but we do a lot of cycling. A few pieces of artwork around the £5,000-£6,000 mark each. I have several rare single malt whiskies which also cost over £2,000 each.

However, when I hear people with children talk about spending £2,000 a month on childcare, even all my most expensive purchases combined cost less than what several sets of childcare over the years ends up costing, with nothing to show for it.

Except their child. Their well looked after child they didn't have to worry about while they worked to pay for their home.

But no physical, material possession means they have "nothing to show for it"?

Exactly! I’d rather spend money on my child being well cared for than a bottle of whisky. But each to their own!

I just bought a £400 laptop but that isn’t that expensive for a laptop. I would NEVER spend a lot on clothes as I really believe it is easy to look stylish on a budget. I have spent quite a lot on collector item dolls, but they have all retained their value. Most expensive one was £160 but is worth about £300.

AnnieSnap · 10/04/2024 18:49

My bike cost £2000

Lifetooshort23 · 10/04/2024 18:52

Other than my wedding/engGement etc (which really was from husband?) then I’ve got a Canada Goose coat that was circa £1k.. wish I’d bought a second one too tbh! Can’t think what else.
we also spent more than £10k on our honeymoon.. we travelled around the world for 3 weeks including stopping in Bora Bora, this is pre Covid obvs because now a family holiday for two weeks abroad somewhere nice but standard for a family holiday is circa £10k and I’m angry about it 😂

i mean if you had billions then you’d probably find yourself spending more on individual items because you’d be surrounded more by that kind of thing, surely? Don’t know until you’re there I guess!

I bought a leather trench coat for £250 - gutted it's got a visible scratch mark on it now (a few years after purchasing) but I still love it so I wear it

You are Herr Flick and I claim my £5.00 😉

KateRose · 10/04/2024 19:06

our Miele washing machine was an expensive buy but one I don’t regret. I slightly love it.
Another was £120 Brasher walking boots with honeymoon money and have made me so happy to wear on any country walks despite me laughing at them when my husband first showed me them. The softest leather inside and going strong 18 years on.
a lovely pashmina I bought my mum when she was ill sort of knowing I would inherit it but reminds me of her when I wear it.
Sensai make up from Harrods if I receive money for a birthday treat. I would like to splurge on lovely things like house furnishing but everything I like is silly money (like posh wallpaper, flooring or fabrics, maybe one day!)

You can buy leather scratch repair kits

I paid for/bought a private dentist appointment/filling for my DS last year during exams at uni. Cost double what it would have privately in our local market town as he is in city of Cambridge……. I feel they rip off the students but needs must at that time.

I would probably spend 900 swiss francs on a hotel room for good night's sleep.

😂

LaDamaDeElche · 10/04/2024 20:16

I think the most expensive thing I've ever bought is a pair of Jimmy choo boots. I was on a pretty average salary, but didn't have kids and used to occasionally spend a fortune on designer stuff, but more statement pieces, I wasn't head to toe in designer gear - mainly sunglasses, shoes, coats and jeans. I would never do that now as I'm a parent and I couldn't justify it. If I was rich I would though. Actually, tell a lie, I still buy designer sunglasses, but have one pair until they are knackered and then I get a new one. They last me years.

OldPerson · 10/04/2024 20:22

It depends what's important to you.

I'd never spend 1K, let alone 30k on jewellery, clothes, designer items. But I wouldn't feel any pride and joy in that.

I have spent everything I earn on a house, a home. And decorating and maintenance for that home.

Because my home is where I am happiest at. It's my husband. It's my children. It's our dog. Fortunately, it's also our lovely neighbours. It's where I feel safest. It's my sanctuary - and controversially, it's also the place the I throw my husband and children out of, so I can have some "me time".

You spend your money on what you value - and what's emotionally important to you.

And that may be going to concerts, travel, cars, collecting dolls or looking good.

But we all spend our own money or budget precisely on how we feel better about ourselves and our lives. Or if we can't - we're forever feeling frustrated by life.

Rubywednesday1 · 10/04/2024 20:58

I spent £900 on an ebike when I gave up my car

EmeraldA129 · 10/04/2024 21:23

I just spent £500 on a suit, it’s absolutely stunning & my favourite colour.

my couches were about 2k. I’ve also spent about £2k on a holiday.

im on a similar salary to you.

ColdWaterDipper · 10/04/2024 21:23

My biggest vice is horses (most spent on one is £10k, least is £500), and other than that it’s sports equipment (bikes for £2000 ish, surf boards for £600-800 etc).

Poppyg123 · 10/04/2024 21:39

2k on eyelid surgery. Best money I ever spent !

Poodleydoodley · 10/04/2024 21:53

Horses. Oh the money that has gone on horses!

DramaLlamaMumma · 10/04/2024 22:29

Last year I bought an air-con unit for something like £900. Felt like a “luxury” purchase because no one needs air-con, but I was heavily pregnant in the summer (September due date) and the heat made physically ill, so it was a great investment. Other than appliances and electronics (that I wouldn’t dare add up how much we spent over the years, it’s definitely DH’s weakness!) most expensive stuff would be engagement ring (I didn’t pay but I think was about £1200), wedding rings (want to say £400ish?), wedding dress (£600 so could have been a lot worse), I think you can see a theme 😂 Most I’ve spent on clothing/footwear that wasn’t wedding related was probably £200. Honestly I balk at spending £20 on a top for myself (it just feels like a lot for what it is?) but would spend twice as much on something for one of my DC without batting an eye, despite the fact that they’ll outgrow their clothes soon and I won’t (hopefully. If I keep eating cake I might 😂)

Lifethroughlenses · 10/04/2024 22:44

@mermaidin I don’t think you are cheap, I think you are really very sensible. I don’t spend much at all on stuff but I do spend loads on holidays, kids activities etc. it’s all about what you prioritise. There is no right way.

AnnieSnap · 10/04/2024 22:45

Oh yes, I forgot my sewing equipment. My sewing machine cost £1600. It was a Valentines gift from my DH. That was more romantic than it sounds because he knew I would really love it 😃 My Overlocker cost £1900. I bought that myself. As with most things, having great quality machines makes a huge difference to dressmaking.
