🔥 Weird Things Your Neighbours Do Thread

I'll start... My neighbour thinks it's totally acceptable to sit in their car with the engine running and lights on.... for 3-4 hours, 6 nights of the week! Not in front of their own house. My mind truly boggles, they are still there now and it's 1:20. Arrived just after 21:00. 🙈 It must be costing a fortune.

Any thoughts as to why he does this?

First time poster here. Apologies, but this is going to be quite long...

We don’t get to speak to our neighbours on one side, as they actually live in the next street, but their back garden backs on to the side of ours. We can’t see into their garden from ours as there’s a tall hedge, but we can see into their garden from our upstairs windows. Anyway, there was a couple living there when we moved in many years ago (let’s call them Ken and Jean), and Jean was a rather large lady with shoulder length blonde hair. A few years ago I realised I hadn’t seen Jean in the garden for some time, and I hadn’t seen any of her washing on the line, only Ken’s. We used to hear them bickering quite a lot, so I wondered if she’d left him.

Not long after that, I saw her in the garden again and assumed they were back together, yet there was something about Jean that seemed slightly different, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The woman in the garden was a large blonde lady just like Jean, but there was a difference, it was as if she was a Jean lookalike. Another thing that made me suspect it wasn’t Jean was the fact that her and Ken were being very lovey-dovey with each other, and there had never been any behaviour like that before. I was finally so intrigued (okay, nosy!) that I found Ken’s Facebook page, and discovered that Jean had actually died a few months earlier! So the lady in the garden who looked just like her was in fact Jean #2! (From what I could gather, Ken seemed to have moved on to Jean #2 very quickly after the demise of Jean #1, which made me wonder if there had been an overlap.)

For the next few months, Jean #2 seemed to be there a lot, especially at weekends. I’d hear her in the garden, along with a couple of noisy kids and a yappy dog which must have belonged to her. Then I noticed she seemed to be there less and less, and then seemed to have stopped coming altogether. I heard Ken on his phone in the garden around that time, saying “Well, when am I going to see you, then?” in a very sulky voice, so I assumed Jean #2 was giving him the cold shoulder.

For several months there was no sign of Jean #2, but then one day I saw her in the garden again, pegging her washing on the line. Or was it her? This lady looked just like Jeans #1 and #2, and yet I wasn’t quite sure if it was the same woman. A few days later I heard her talking outside, and she had an accent that definitely wasn’t local to our area (the other 2 Jeans were local), so this must be Jean #3!

This Jean seemed to be around for quite a while, but a couple of weeks ago I realised I hadn’t seen her for a few months, and I’d only seen Ken’s washing on the line, so I wondered if they’d split up. Then a few days ago, some plus sized female washing appeared on the line! I haven’t seen who it belongs to yet, so I don’t know if Jean #3 is back, or whether Ken’s moved on to Jean #4! It seems weird to me how all his ladies look so much alike. Ken obviously goes for a particular type of woman!

My old next door neighbour used to vacuum her back garden (it was devoid of anything apart from white tiles because apparently it was a 'Zen garden'). I don't know why but it really gave me the rage whenever I saw her out there vacuuming (possibly something to do with the beautiful tree she had torn down to create the zen garden).

Our ex next door neighbour, used to keep an immaculate lawn, used to use one of those push lawn mowers (ie not petrol or electric) the lawn had lines like a cricket pitch.

He had two beagles who he used to groom in the garden.
After he had finished, he would hoover up all the fur/hair off the grass!

These stories are great. IUsedToBe that is soo funny, you write lovely, it is like a short story and waiting to hear if that is yet another Jean.

JustToBeMe that is hilarious, when I brush my dog I either just put in a bag as she fills a bag with her shedding or put it in a lump in the corner as birds love it for their nest for their babies. Hoovering the grass, jesus think would be time to have me committed at that stage if started doing that.

I also have neighbours around the corner and they put Christmas outdoor decorations/lights up just after Halloween, then the other neighbours seem to be in competition with them and have to outdo them by having a more elaborate lights/decorations theme.

Lovely elderly couple NDNs had a back garden which was overlooked by the upstairs flat and fire escape above an indian restaurant. You'd sometimes see the waiters hanging around on the fire escape chatting on their break. The restaurant owners put a note through every door in our street one summer complaining about NDN naked sunbathing in their garden (which they overlooked) 😳 Male NDN used to iron in the nude in his front bay window with the ironing board at the right height to cover his embarassment.

My neighbour is a woman, lives alone, very unpopular as she is particularly unpleasant. She has gravel where there would have been a lawn once, she goes out and rakes it so it's level then moves the odd bit of gravel by hand and places it carefully where she wants it, cleans and polishes her guttering inside and out and mows the back lawn for what feels like hours! She will mow, stop for half an hour, mow then stop for another half hour then mow again (always on a beautiful day when we have decided to sit in the garden and enjoy the weather)

RedRuby2020 believe me I had years of renting so many properties and always noisy neighbours who did not give a crap about others. Had this weird religious group that used to meet upstairs and the noise of them chanting my god thought they were going to come down through my ceiling, that was in London. Had druggies beside me in a house and a lovely area until they moved in, their house always getting raided. they used to be up all night and slept all day. People coming and going, drunks arriving and walls were like paper. They would slam their doors and play the same shitty song all the time. Felt like going out and strangling them, in the end I had to move with my son and so stressful. Another place had nosy neighbour who just sat looking out his front bedroom window watching everyone coming and going. Police always up to them also. So at last got our own place and is great as nothing worse than listening to someone running across their floors non-stop and making noise all the time and slamming doors, why can't people just close a door normally. So the guy above us doing his closing the door 3 times ocd thing is nothing and they are great and if they do have friends over always finishes reasonable time. Your neighbours should not be smoking at the front door as everyone's access. Put a plant pot there with sand in it and maybe they will use it. I had to ask upstairs neighbours in old place to stop throwing cig butts down as my patio not their bin. Basic manners. Are you on a housing list or any chance of getting a place. Very stressful especially when have a child and hope things improve as never thought my situation would.

Thankyou!
Glad you got to where you did.
Just today they had family and a friend turn up obviously had a key or waited for tenant not sure which came first. All went off not long after as obviously an event going on, as those people are down visiting.
Anyway the friend is as bad as the tenant gutter mouth sorry to say it.
Then her and the relative went out the front to smoke, and her talking at the top of her voice no shame.
Various going in and out banging slamming.
I am kind of dreading if/when they all return later on.
I am taking some action's because I'm not going to suffer.
I am on the housing list but that's a long time now, not sure why you asked. I mean in terms of how it will help.
I am in private final offer from council.
The property management when I signed up for this, said they keep it as one adult one child, hence why they placed me there. And when below vacated. they replaced with current tenant again one adult and child.
But bf here daily though they say they are on their own. I despise women who do that when some are in that position. Then baby too.
They should of left her where she was but it was temporary and she was promised to come back to the area 🤦‍♀️
The bf is having a good life and she won't go any time soon.
Despite the bedroom where eldest sleeps being small, the youngest will just go in there, and that will be that.

I'm glad you covered the smoking part. As I have been told on here previously that it is totally ok for them to smoke at front etc.

Any update on neighbour in car? Is he still parking outside for hours?

FeetLikeFlippers · 19/08/2024 19:56

People do this on my street all the tIme and the noise drives me mad. I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the modern day version of men spending time in their sheds. They just want some alone time but instead of tinkering in a shed or having a hobby, they’re just killing time on the internet. It’s the only explanation I can think of.

Portfun24 · 19/08/2024 20:30

My uncle used to do this. Would get home from work and sit in his car in the drive for hours. My aunt told us he was on work calls. He only told us when we were adults he was actually just listening to the football on the radio and waiting for their kids to be put to bed.

When my neighbours opposite go away for a few days (they do this often, they're retired) he carries the suitcase to the car and sits in the driver's seat.

Then for about ten minutes she runs in and out like she's on a weird game show, grabbing random stuff from the house and chucking it in the car. Their stairs are in the hall so I can see her running up and down them as well as through to the kitchen.

Last time they went, I saw her go in and out for a baseballcap, some coats, a pair of trainers, some bananas, an umbrella, and a box of something unidentified. I don't know why she doesn't put her random stuff all in one bag by the door.

If I see them going out now, I stand and watch just for entertainment 😂

Grin that sounds like me (although I'm not married or retired).
Toddler waits very patiently in the car, all ready to go, while I panic run in and out of the house picking up all the last minute but that my brain will only tell me about when I've locked the house up, got in the car and just about to switch the engine on.

OutOfTheHouse · 11/04/2024 18:11

I’ve written about this before but our attached neighbours are odd. We’ve been here about 12 years now. When we first lived here we were in the front bedroom. We soon realised that sometime between 11 and 2 most nights the entire family would get into the car and disappear off for a couple of hours, we would hear them leave and return. No bags of shopping or anything. The youngest child then was about 10. 12 years later and they still do it.
Two adults and the children must both now be over 20. No one goes out of the house much during the day. No one goes to work.

I think they must be vampires off out for a feed.
