Weird shit from an 80s childhood

CandidFruit · 07/04/2024 21:56

Reading through the retro sweets thread reminded me of some other random stuff from growing up in the early 80s.

Who else remembers the garbage pail kids? (I mean, Cabbage patch kids was bad enough!)
Now that is some seriously weird shit!

Mind you, I bet anything if you have the full set, you’ll probably be able to pay off your mortgage 😂

Yes I vaguely recall those harnesses I think they had a picture of a rabbit etched into them.

I think some did - on a kind of oval medallion thing? I can see it in navy in my minds eye- though I definitely remember white leather versions of the harness straps. Digging a loooong way back in my memories now!

justasking111 · 04/05/2024 23:39

Ours was navy reins on an oval for a silver cross pram

Yes that sounds right - and they were called “ reins”. Like a horse! It seems quite bizarre now…

Thevelvelletes · 05/05/2024 01:36

Reigns I had them late 60s , baby blue I think the did have a rabbit motif.mind getting yanked back if I got to close to road etc.

CandidFruit · 05/05/2024 08:06

Oh I remember the baby reins in big silver cross prams on our neighbours children!
I think theirs had a lamb on it.

We can’t talk about the 80s without mentioning school discos!
Before everything got Americanised and proms were a thing, there were School Discos, where you all huddled together with your pals, girls one side of the hall, boys on the other. The brave ones shuffled around the centre of the room “dancing” 😂
And it had to be ‘Careless Whisper’ as the closing song…

Do parents not use reins anymore? I used them with my toddlers in the 00s. I remember mine too, from Morhercare with the oval panel.
The ones I used with my kids were more clip style.

My DILS resisted them but as a slow granny in charge I bought them. Guess what they were borrowed immediately 😂

I pity the fools without a good school disco and just an extortionate prom for their parents that go along with all that guff to pay for LOL

CandidFruit · 09/06/2024 16:54

I had to resurrect this thread as one of my childhood friends just sent me this link with a “Lol, do you remember this shit?!”
Immediately thought of this post 😂

17 Things Every House Had in the '80s

Out of those 17, we had the Encyclopaedia Britannica, a big telly and Tupperware.

Zonder · 09/06/2024 21:55

I still have (and regularly use) 3 of those - the juicer, the tupperware and Trivial Pursuit!

EBearhug · 09/06/2024 23:54

I use a juicer quite often. I specifically wanted one which collected the juice, though mine is stainless steel, not Tupperware. I think Mum's was glass.

We had Tupperware and Triv. Had no telly at all until 1986.

Rhubarb and Custard was very trippy along with Crystal Tipps and Alastair :) Probably 70's though. Possibly early 80's.

I used to have the Roobarb and Custard theme tune as my ringtone.

Anyone remember Pipkins? It's time (bong bong ting as animated clocks appear on screen) for a story! With Hartley Hare and a pig called Pig.

Why 'used to' have Roobarb and Custard? It's unimprovable, surely.

Was Hartley Hare that nightmarish figure that looked like something from the Bad Taxidermy page on Facebook?

SoundTheSirens · 11/06/2024 10:32

Ahhh, you remember Hartley well then!

I changed my ringtone to something that was a brief internet craze about 20 years ago (no, not Crazy Frog <shudder>) but it's so niche that if I name it, it will totally out me to the friends I have who I know use MN, when put alongside info I've shared on other threads 🙊

justasking111 · 11/06/2024 15:06

My friend has had Bob the Builder ring tone for twenty years now. My sons had crazy frog, i had Axel Foley. 😂

Yes, I remember lucky bags.

They promised so much big bright bag....and bugger all in them.
Then wishing you'd bought a 5p mix up.70s.

SinnerBoy · 17/07/2024 08:15

Cadburys chocolate ‘dispensers’ you put 2 p in to get a tiny chocolate.

Edited

I always hoped for one of these every Christmas (after spotting them in Christmas catalogs) - still waiting!

You'd need massive proper 2p's to put in it. I think I had one, you'd also need bars of Cadbury's chocolate, also a thing of the past.

Spokey-Dokeys were another thing: plastic beads for your bike spokes, which would clatter up and down the spokes when you rode slowly.

The digital watches which beeped on the hour. The head teacher banned them on the spot when lots of them beeped during a quiet moment in assembly. There was also a moment of waiting quietly for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and in the silence, lots of watches beeped at midnight, highlighting the lateness in starting.

Ah yes: one January just about everyone in my year came back to school wearing the bargain basement digital watches they'd got for Christmas. By Easter most of them had conked out.
