Weird shit from an 80s childhood

Reading through the retro sweets thread reminded me of some other random stuff from growing up in the early 80s.

Who else remembers the garbage pail kids? (I mean, Cabbage patch kids was bad enough!)
Now that is some seriously weird shit!

Mind you, I bet anything if you have the full set, you’ll probably be able to pay off your mortgage 😂

@CandidFruit Yes Morph had a friend called Chas who was made out of white plasticine and always pulling pranks on him. I say friend but more of an irritant. Was Chorlton and the Wheelies 70's or 80's?

Late 70’s. Little old lady - I think it must have been when I came home for lunch , that and barnaby the bear.

CandidFruit · 28/04/2024 13:39

Yes the paler one, Chas, that’s it , couldn’t remember his name for the life of me!

Also, ‘Why Don’t You…”

And this is going waaay back to the early 80s but did anyone have a twin tub washing machine in their house?
My best friend’s mum had one, and I was oddly fascinated 😂

And what was “sending people to Coventry” all about?! (As in ignoring them, not literally 😆

Chas was permanently angry, he had issues. I also remember a girl figure called Delilah, and one made from tinfoil. I used to like Tony Hart, at one stage he had a bumbling comedy caretaker sidekick called Gordon Bennett, I seem to recall.

Chorlton and the Wheelies was the stuff of nightmares, but I think it was 1980s. Equally hellish was that advert for (I think) Kinder Surprise with a giant Humpty Dumpty who said something like "yibble shaky". And speaking of - does anyone remember Jigsaw? And that Noseybonk? F~~king hell.

I've also remembered another obscure cartoon - the Poddington Peas. About peas. Who lived in a garden and got up to all sorts. There was Creepea, Black-Eyed-Pea and Dumpea, amoing others and I can still remember the theme tune. One of our history teachers used to leave us alone in lessons on Fridays so she could go to the gym, nominally under the supervision of the other history teacher. We'd be as silent as mice so he'd rarely look in on us. When the coast was clear we would jump about on tables singing theme tunes (like the Poddington Peas) and playing hangman on the whiteboard. I once had to go to the science lab to get some ethanol to clean it because we'd accidentally used permanent marker instead of the drywipe pens.

Chorlton and the Wheelies was a 'dragon' who lived in a mad village with the Wheelies (blobs with faces on wheels) he was very stupid but always managed to save the Wheelies inadvertantly from Fenella the green witch who had weird triangle barbed wire like familiars. It was indeed a very disturbing kids programme. Fenella was Welsh and said things like 'I'll get that dragon' in an exaggerated way. I bought it on VHS about 15 years ago lol. Along with the Clangers and Ivor the Engine. Also Bagpuss.

CandidFruit · 28/04/2024 13:53

@Slightlylostalongtheway and @TheFireflies 👏🏻👏🏻

CandidFruit sister applauds your genius!
She’s really jealous as she loved that show but never had the guts to send anything in!
Family Ness - another one I had honestly forgotten about, love the song 😁

@SinnerBoy I never knew that!

and congrats to @chaosmaker for being a member! Do you still like pies? 😉😁

Chorlton and the Wheelies was late 70s. There were reruns of all the 70s kids programmes on in the early 80s like Trumpton, Bagpuss, Magic Roundabout etc but I somehow missed that one.

Anyone remember Ragtime, A Handful of Songs, Chocablock?

LoreleiG · 28/04/2024 20:06

Omg Super Gran! That has brought back memories. I thought the lyric went “If you want to come a cropper from BA Baracus” and was about to post this confidently then googled, and it’s actually “I don’t want to cause a ruckus”! I had forgotten that Billy Connolly sung it.

How about Johnny Briggs, the cause of much playground air trombone and Jossy’s Giants?

@EBearhug how and why??! I didn’t realise she was autograph-worthy famous! 😂

@justasking111 Yes! DH had that poster (of course he did!) and I had the man and baby one, think I put the image up earlier on in the thread. Athena posters were the best. I also had a train station one.

Who remembers the forever friends bear? I had so many of those cards (just because mind, NOT for sending to anyone 🤣)
That’s another things, collecting stationery. Scented erasers, pens, pencils, notebooks etc. Well that’s come round and bitten me on the butt because all three DCs are stationery obsessed 😂

@LoreleiG yes I agree Wordy is a bit creepy.

Laughing at the ‘Eternal Beau’ love.
Did anyone else flick through Argos catalogues endlessly and “furnish” their future homes? 🙈🤭

Most weekends myself and my friend would go to the local bookstore and buy fancy stationery and pencils.
I LOVED the forever friends, and had all sorts with them.(just for me, never to actually send!)
Did they do magnets also?

Duck Tales and Count Duckula, also weren't the 80's when we had all the John Hughes? movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 16 candles (didn't see that as thought Molly Ringwald was an arse), Breakfast Club and all of those films? All the teen angst films lol

For a while if anyone knocked on our door we would shout "I'll get it!" (Loved Nanny)

This thread is excellent for memories

There was a Rod Hull and Emu show for kids called the Pink Windmill. They had the catchphrase ' there's somebody at the door' which for some reason stuck in my brains and I just cannot stop saying it if the doorbell goes and I'm in company (or even when I'm not, I'm so sad.)

Staticgirl · 02/05/2024 19:09

Grotbags! Yes. Oh my word.....

Slightlylostalongtheway · 03/05/2024 07:24

Chorlton 80s ..I had a science teacher who was the spit of the kettle witch finally..
Hello little old lady 😁

Thevelvelletes · 03/05/2024 07:35

Finella not finally... bloody phone.

Cattyisbatty · 03/05/2024 08:41

I was 9 in 1980 and remember quite a bit!
It freaks me out now but I was really into Rolf Harris and had a book where he drew his interpretation of famous paintings printed next to the original. I remember copying one and taking it in to school.

Grotbags! Yes. Oh my word.....

And her flying Hoover. I always felt sorry for Croc. He was very put-upon.

I also remember Wizbit, which was nothing short of disturbing.

chaosmaker · 04/05/2024 19:47

Rhubarb and Custard was very trippy along with Crystal Tipps and Alastair :) Probably 70's though. Possibly early 80's.

idreamoftoddlersleepytime · 04/05/2024 19:48

Findus Cripsy Pancakes. From the freezer.

generallycontent · 04/05/2024 19:48

Shoot that poison arrow through my heart!

Calliopespa · 04/05/2024 23:00

A bit random but does anyone remember the leather harnesses that they used on prams before prams came with built-in pram straps? It was like a dog harness and you attached them to rings in the pram. I think there was also a long lead attachment that could be used if the child was out of the pram , exactly like a dog on a leash!

ChishiyaBat · 04/05/2024 23:06

Yes @Calliopespa my baby brother had them!

justasking111 · 04/05/2024 23:24

Yes I vaguely recall those harnesses I think they had a picture of a rabbit etched into them.
