Weird shit from an 80s childhood

Reading through the retro sweets thread reminded me of some other random stuff from growing up in the early 80s.

Who else remembers the garbage pail kids? (I mean, Cabbage patch kids was bad enough!)
Now that is some seriously weird shit!

Mind you, I bet anything if you have the full set, you’ll probably be able to pay off your mortgage 😂

'Jem is my name! No one else is the same!'

Superlative lyrics!

Jem was cool! But THE MISFITS were PUNK!!! loved this

GoodHeavens99 · 18/04/2024 11:40

'We're the Misfits and we're gonna get her'

If my memory serves me correctly!

ellebelli · 18/04/2024 11:55

My fave was storm(I had most of the dolls and my friend was jealous...but she had kimber which I never got!)
I had the stage and everything(spoilt brat) I even had useless Rio.

ellebelli · 18/04/2024 11:56

Oh and later on a misfit with white hair came into it? I remember one episode all about her-the only episode that sticks in my mind!.
Can't remember her name

Timotei shampoo is still available in Superdrug.

Ah, that brings back memories. There was a lad in high school (in the 80s) called Timothy and everyone called him Timotei. Every now and then, he'd go berserk about it; I feel pretty bad about it now.

Anyone mentioned white dog shit?

Deeleyboppers!! Loved them used to sell them at the market. I remember having a pair with red sparkly hearts.

I had those ones too!

MarkWithaC · 18/04/2024 15:57

I had gold sparkly hearts Smile

We had a Timotei too, he seemed to take it in good humour though!

I had silver sparkly heart deeley boppers.

I remember that Blue Peter episode! It's also reminded me of the time they had the group Musical Youth on, singing "Pass the Dutchie on the Left Hand Side" (Different sort of Dutch, though...)

Edited

I remember both of these Blue Peter episodes 😂

My dad was a fireman and came round giving the talks. Scared the shit out of us all by slamming a box shut in the middle of the talk and saying "now imagine that was the firework you're holding going off in your hand". Then proceeded to show pics of when it had happened. Never touched a firework since. Jeez parents would freak now if kids had talks like that!!!

There was also that sparkler ad where a girl touches a sparkler after it has stopped and burns her hand. I never liked fireworks thanks to 80s safety ads!

REP22 · 18/04/2024 18:47

Awww - when Ludo, Hoggle and Sir Didymus say "Goodbye Sarah..." at the end of Labyrinth😥

I mentioned this upthread. I’m nearly fifty and still terrified of sparklers 😄

SinnerBoy · 19/04/2024 09:44

I burned my hand one when I was four, someone else had dropped it and I picked it up. Ouch!

chaosmaker · 19/04/2024 09:58

I wish they'd bring back the safety adverts, particularly the one where the stupid man is in the box junction and the big hand comes down and gets him. Sadly doesn't hurl him away. There are lots of 70's/80's safety films on youtube. The AIDS one meant I always carried and fitted condoms and no one ever refused to wear one either. They need to bring out a whole range of STI safety films :)

"Apaches" safety film about fun on the farm was particularly memorable, albeit from the 70s, not 80s.

We had a little firework party in our garden when I was about 4 - the kid next door took hold of a sparkler by the lit end. The ad was mild by comparison.

My brother was a Timotei! Hehe

They do show safe sex ads but late at night. When statistics show its the middle aged and older at risk and they're all tucked up.

You realise those of us reminiscing about 80s childhoods on this thread ARE middle-aged? 😂

I'm 70's/80's childhoods - I'm proper middle aged if not old! Grin

Cripes I recall the Apaches one...

I was speaking to DB about these films the other day and what we got up to. I'm surprised we're still alive to be honest!

There was quite a harrowing train track safety ad. The pylon one was another favourite :)

That squeezy chocolate glaze was called Ice Magic. It came in a sort of cone-shaped bottle and different flavours - I can remember plain chocolate, mint, orange and was there a toffee one?

In a similar vein, Arctic Circles. Basically slices of Arctic Roll with a chocolate coating. 😄

I seem to remember the quality of the chocolate in these things being a bit shit, but as a budding (and undiscerning, at the time) chocoholic I loved them anyway. 😂

Yes, and even now, I don't like driving over level crossings because of that. When I was seeing a German guy, we went for a walk near his village, and part of the walk was along the railway line, which I hated, because obviously at any moment, I was about to be mown down by a train (despite there only being one an hour...)

chaosmaker · 21/04/2024 16:48

They wouldn't have a similar impact now though as people's viewing was so fragmented. Us 70's/80's children have a shared background of TV as did the generations before us. Children now are at ransom to whatever dross they watch on youtube or tiktok. Less of a common experience and more fragmented.

I'd like to see a safety film about people on mobile phones and driving being ploughed by a truck or mown down on a crossing. Would be interesting to see if it made a difference.

80's stuff I liked was also knightmare, the game show, press gang, the dark is rising (although that may have been 70's), newsround because it treated children like thinking humans. Much of our TV didn't treat us as idiots from what I remember.
Also enjoyed Tiswas and Why Don't You?

Can I ask if anyone remembers this party game we played in the 80s. A group of kids hold hands in a circle and 1 kid is on. They weave in and out of the circle and then find another child and tap their shoulders from behind. We sang 'in and out goes Mary something' (or possibly a different girls name) 3 times when they do the weaving bit and then 'tap a rap a rap her on her shoulders'. I have a photo of me playing it as a child, I know the melody.
