Anyone seen his new stand up tour?
Went last night, was so excited and near the front. I left feeling a bit disappointed. To me it felt like it never really got started, and I never really laughed properly like where you can't breathe. It was ok, aside from the hour of name old adverts.
He also looks unwell? My mums convinced he's poorly.
What's everyone's opinion?

Also they were very very strict on no photos to the point bouncers were actually asking people to leave for having their phones out.

I was a little disappointed tbh. The first half felt like a warm up act, the second was funnier. But when I came home I watched some old YouTube clips of him and quite a lot of the material he'd used on the evening was very old, esp about his Nan.

HelloMiss · 07/04/2024 15:42

I saw him years ago, he was good back then

He's now had kids, been through lockdown... no new material from all that?

Can't still be all garlic bread and mis-heard lyrics!

allyours · 07/04/2024 15:47

@HelloMiss that was about 40% of it!

Lockdown wasn't mentioned.. the kids maybe a few times, very few new jokes and they weren't massively funny I didn't find

We saw it a few weeks ago I enjoyed it but was a lot ruder than his old stuff.

Ambergrain · 07/04/2024 15:59

We went a couple of weeks ago, very disappointed to be honest. The first twenty minutes was just him singing songs from the adverts, nothing comical about that and if you're under 35 most would be before your time and so you'd be clueless.
Then about 45 mins of stand up which was okay but dated, followed by a rehash of similar material that he did back in the day.
The final twenty minutes was bizarre - not funny at all and we just didn't get it.
I loved him back when he was at his height of fame, now I'd probably turn over if he came on the TV doing stuff like his recent show.

allyours · 07/04/2024 16:05

@Ambergrain I completely agree, that's exactly how I'd sum it up! I am 35 so I didn't know most of them! The end bit was very bizarre.. some of the things he's done in the past have had me crying with laughter.. it wasn't worth waiting 2 years for that's for sure Sad

I saw him a few weeks ago and left feeling disappointed.

He's definitely lost his spark.

Thesonofaphesantplucker · 07/04/2024 16:22

Yes I went last year. I was so, so excited, but came away disappointed too. I had very similar feelings about the material as those already mentioned.

I also didn’t know most of the adverts/theme tunes, so that was entirely lost on me.

I am a huge fan of his and have seen him live before and loved it.

I assume many people have felt similarly, given the lack of hype about it since the first few shows.

allyours · 07/04/2024 16:35

@Fizbosshoes yes it was ruder! A lot more F bombs and mention of "dicks".. and I didn't really like the coil joke either

TheChosenTwo · 07/04/2024 16:37

My mum went last year after years of being a huge fan and said that it was disappointing and flat. She said she was gutted and that he’d lost his spark. What a shame that a lot of it was old rehashed stuff.

Whatineed · 07/04/2024 16:44

Sheesh I have tickets for January next year, and I'll have to book flights and a hotel to see him.

Maybe I'll sell them. I've also heard a lot this past year about Dave Spikey actually being the one that wrote all the great gags for him anyway. Sad that he's regurgitating all the old stuff for such a big tour schedule.

allyours · 07/04/2024 17:05

@Whatineed
He came out (late) and does 20 mins off getting the crown to name old chocolate adverts.
He then talks about old jokes, garlic bread, uncle knob head gets a mention, talks about having had kidney stone and "losing 17 stone in a day" in reference to his weight loss.

A break, he films the audience which is probably the funniest past.. a sing along at the end which is bizarre and that's about it.

Each to their own.. DH enjoyed it

Wasn't he terribly ill with a brain tumour? Maybe that's had some longterm effect on him.

allyours · 07/04/2024 17:10

@AmysFriend was he!?! Shock

OP posts:
AmysFriend · 07/04/2024 17:11

I don't think it was public knowledge.

Listentogold · 07/04/2024 17:15

I thought it was his wife that had a brain tumour.

HelloMiss · 07/04/2024 17:16

AmysFriend · 07/04/2024 17:11

I don't think it was public knowledge.

Well how do you know that then? 😕

Springtimewingtime · 07/04/2024 17:20

Agree, we saw him right at the beginning of this tour and were both disappointed. Honestly wouldn't be booking flights and hotels for the privilege. It felt old, tired, out of step and a but uncomfortable in parts and I thought he looked unwell too. I felt guilty saying this to anyone as I just loved him back in the day, proper belly laughs, can't breathe for laughing etc but not anymore.

AngieRosess · 07/04/2024 19:20

after reading this I'm glad we sold our tickets for January just gone, several of us couldn't make it so sold them back to Ticketmaster, very easy to do, you were allowed to sell them back for the price of the ticket plus 10% I think it was, so we broke even.

what a shame if he is indeed ill. Love him on Car Share so much!

Menomeno · 07/04/2024 19:27

I thought exactly the same. He definitely seemed ill. He looked like an old man (he’s only 50). Even his voice sounded old, and just different.

Floralnomad · 07/04/2024 19:33

We saw him in December and I agree that it was very disappointing. The ‘jokes’ go on way too long particularly as they aren’t that funny in the first place and the last part wasn’t remotely funny . I’d have happily left midway through but we were with other people .

dastidlydaschel · 07/04/2024 19:47

We went earlier this year. Was terrible. Not funny, relied far too much on his old gags. It was actually very sad to see we thought. I saw him several times in his hay days so was really looking forward to it. Was very disappointed.
