Anyone seen his new stand up tour?
Went last night, was so excited and near the front. I left feeling a bit disappointed. To me it felt like it never really got started, and I never really laughed properly like where you can't breathe. It was ok, aside from the hour of name old adverts.
He also looks unwell? My mums convinced he's poorly.
What's everyone's opinion?

Sheesh I have tickets for January next year, and I'll have to book flights and a hotel to see him.

Maybe I'll sell them. I've also heard a lot this past year about Dave Spikey actually being the one that wrote all the great gags for him anyway. Sad that he's regurgitating all the old stuff for such a big tour schedule.

Genuinely I'd take the hit on the ticket money and not bother. Or try and sell your tickets. I'd feel sorry for buys them though as it's that bad!

Clawdy · 07/04/2024 19:55

My sister was gutted that she couldn't go, think she will feel better now! Didn't realise he'd been ill, though.

Origamiheaven · 07/04/2024 20:03

Saw him in January. I agree with other posters. The show felt like a Peter Kay tribute act

We saw him at the O2 last summer and despite being up in the gods,we absolutely loved it. He did look poorly too and I worry he's taking a lot on. When is this tour ending? 2026??It must take a lot out of you.

Oblomov24 · 07/04/2024 20:14

What a shame. Surely if he's that poor one of his friends (Dave Spikey) Wink should tell him to step down. Plus we can all just tell when someone looks ill.

ThatJollyTealCat · 25/05/2024 13:20

Just seen Peter Kay May 24. Very poor imo. As a start I couldn’t get over how different he looked, not his fault obviously but it just wasn’t him.
The jokes lacked any structure and he constantly dropped the f bomb and referred to his nether regions. Some jokes were cringeworthy lacking the working class observations of his past material.
He’s had his day and clearly run out of material, thought if you rely on nostalgia it makes sense it would happen. Some people around me were laughing hysterically but others were as unimpressed as me.
I felt a bit sad for him If this is swan-song but he’ll have lost a lot of fans without gaining any .
Time to retire, look after yourself and family Peter.

TrustPenguins · 13/07/2024 16:56

Saw him recently and agree with the majority of people here. I couldn't get over how different he looked - lost loads of weight and had aged a lot. I don't know if he has been ill ? I thought he cancelled his last tour and had been out of the public eye because a family member was poorly...? Nothing was ever made public though so who knows.
His act wasn't great. Nowhere near as funny as his previous ones (I've seen him live before and belly laughed the whole way through). Not keen on the increased use of swears and 'blue' material, it just isn't (or wasn't) him. The ending was just all a bit surreal. Shame really.

TrustPenguins · 14/07/2024 10:11

Anyone else seen him recently?

WiseOldBird · 11/09/2024 21:49

We saw him a few days ago at the O2 and I was shocked. For the first 10 minutes, I genuinely thought he was the warmup act. He seemed to me to have completely lost his spark. He also seemed to me to be physically ill. And I also got a sense that mentally he wasn't, in a good place. He talked about medication that he was on for OCD but I think there was also a lot of other stuff going on. It felt like he had to be there to fulfil a contractual obligation but there was no joy in him. He was deflated. We left feeling very disappointed. I also could not shake the feeling throughout the whole performance that he was very unhappy. So much so that I could not bring myself to laugh at some of what he was saying.

And some of the stuff he bought up was either very rude or very dark. He made references to, all sorts of conspiracy theories which just did not seem like him at all.

TrustPenguins · 12/09/2024 06:48

I was the same - literally spent the first 10 minutes or so trying to work out if it actually was him. So bizarre. And sad really. He just looked and acted so different- and not in a good way.

TennisLady · 15/11/2024 14:27

I’m glad others thought the same! After feeling so lucky to get tickets I was very disappointed. The ending was bizarre, all the fuss over security walking around to ensure no one was filming it so he could “keep it as a surprise for everyone” - wasn’t my thing at all I just wanted to leave.

BigDahliaFan · 15/11/2024 14:30

My brother went a couple of weeks ago and said it was brilliant. But he doesn't get out much to be fair....

ELMhouse · 22/12/2024 12:06

Sorry to rehash an old thread but we went to see him at AO in Manchester last night! I was so disappointed really didn’t feel like he had the same spark and the jokes felt old fashioned and just didn’t really flow. It seemed so rehearsed (obvs it is but for standup I like it when it flows so well it seems like the comic is just coming up with joke on the spot!). Some bits had me laughing but nothing really belly laughing!

Pedallleur · 22/12/2024 12:34

Preferred him in Car Share or Phoenix Nights. As with many acts always seems like a cash grab now esp as he insists on a cut of the bar/car parking (tbf a lot of big names do) but somehow thought he was above that.

candlelightees · 11/01/2025 02:11

Went tonight.

Agree with a lot if what has been said but did enjoy it.

My mate thinks it was 'you know who at the end' surely it was a lookalike.

mummalog · 11/01/2025 04:30

I thought it was rubbish Sad

It’s not it’s a ‘deep fake’ (or similar). 😛

A hologram, just like the Abba ones. Very convincing.

I actually did enjoy it in the end. It was never going to be spontaneous and fresh with the sheer amount of dates and repetition and the type of venue, compared to the first time I saw him in 1999, for example.

I also think people have seen a different kind of comedy from him over the years and forget his Workingmens club background of stand up. As he's an observational comedian of a specific generation, I imagine if you hadn't lived through the same era he refers to, you wouldn't enjoy the references. And if you don't enjoy the reminiscent aspect of comedy, again it wouldn't be a great evening for you.

Clawdy · 12/01/2025 08:22

Who did they show at the end??!

NotsosunnyShropshire · 12/01/2025 08:26

Thesonofaphesantplucker · 07/04/2024 16:22

Yes I went last year. I was so, so excited, but came away disappointed too. I had very similar feelings about the material as those already mentioned.

I also didn’t know most of the adverts/theme tunes, so that was entirely lost on me.

I am a huge fan of his and have seen him live before and loved it.

I assume many people have felt similarly, given the lack of hype about it since the first few shows.

Same here. We even had tickets for a few months later, but sold them back to the vendor as we were so disappointed.

imo, he is still ill and should not be doing a huge tour like this. Maybe just a one off tv show. We were shocked when he first came out onto the stage.

eta: we saw him years ago and were both nearly crying with laughing.

candlelightees · 12/01/2025 09:03

Clawdy · 12/01/2025 08:22

Who did they show at the end??!

Noel Gallagher but it was a real person definitely.
The choir were holograms which were also convincing but it was a real person. Just obviously not Noel.

People with me were convinced it was though. There would be no way he would do that for every show. 🤣

boredsolicitor · 12/01/2025 09:12

I went last night too AO in Manchester. I loved it and so I think did most of the audience around me . I thought the bit at the end was fun and a bit bonkers but riounds it off well

I went in 1999 too and then again in about 2010 (I think) and have always been a big fan of his standup and TV shows, but this didn’t hit the mark for me.
I actually think it lacked his usual clever observational approach and I was defo on the younger side of the audience (although I’m 40s so not young). It just wasn’t his usual standard for me. And a lot of mentions of genitalia (I like a lot of different types of comedy and some super rude, but this just has never been his style) so again missed the mark for me.

of course all shows are rehearsed to an inch of their life but I think a great comic for me (as Peter Kay was previously) makes it look un-rehearsed and spontaneous and that’s what it was also lacking.

the older members of the audience however (55+) did seem to find it very funny so maybe it’s an age thing (but again I’ve never had an issue before as always found him hilarious).

just my opinion of course but just felt off!

candlelightees · 12/01/2025 11:59

He seemed to slur his words and forget what he was saying a lot.

Is this part of the act because it felt painful.

nestingvillage · 12/01/2025 12:12

Really disappointing.

The younger people in our party just didn't get a lot of it.
