Do you wake up to go toilet during the night?

Just wondering really.
My friend thinks I have a problem because I wake to go wee during the night. I've always done it. Not an age thing but I drink loads of water during the day
She reckons she never has the urge and can sleep for 12 hours
I also remember my ex never getting up to wee either
It's fine right? Please just tell me she has an iron bladder lol

Yes most nights. I'm 39, and have for many years. No bladder issues. Currently pregnant so it's usually more frequent than the once.

Rtmhwales · 07/04/2024 00:05

I often get up to use the toilet. DH probably gets up once or twice a week during the night, but he goes to bed at midnight and is up for work at 6am anyway. I think it’s normal.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/04/2024 00:06

Neither DH or I get up for a wee.

GrandmaMazur · 07/04/2024 00:07

I do now I’m menopausal (and did while I was on cancer treatment) - never used to wake up for anything before that!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 07/04/2024 00:08

No, it was the only indication I had that I was pregnant (albeit I thought I was diabetic rather than pregnant) .
If I am substantially woken, eg DS wakes up or the cat goes on a destruction spree, then I usually go, but I don't want to for that reason. I mainly drink water and herbal/mint teas and the occasional coffee so I'm well hydrated.

BettyShagter · 07/04/2024 00:08

No I don't but there were two brief periods when I was pre-diabetic, and during those times I woke every night at 4am on the dot.

Blythe1973 · 07/04/2024 00:08

Twice

CantStandMeow · 07/04/2024 00:08

Nope. Neither does DH

PinkSunsetSky · 07/04/2024 00:08

I do
Every night
3/4 am

Hummusanddipdip · 07/04/2024 00:09

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, it's usually around 3am if I do. Dh doesn't, ds does about 5am then comes to get in bed with me and dh.

freeandfierce · 07/04/2024 00:10

Yes, since becoming menopausal it's 4/5 times a night usually.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 07/04/2024 00:10

It's better than the alternative.

Can I ask, do you think it was directly related to sugar intake in the day?

Blythe1973 · 07/04/2024 00:11

Justice thinking...I have a cup of tea before bed, maybe if you drink before bed you do?...

Weenurse · 07/04/2024 00:11

A lot of people need to urinate overnight. Most people get the urge to empty their bladder around 300-400 mls and are absolutely busting around 600-800 mls.
BUT … every bladder is different. Some hold more and some hold less.
Sometimes it is other factors causing people to get up overnight. People with sleep apnea, for example, produce more urine over night than during the day.
Unless it is a problem for you, getting up once at night is considered relatively normal.
If it turns into more or affects your quality of life, then seek medical help.
I get up once overnight as I always have a hot chocolate before bed and chocolate is a bladder stimulant.

CointreauVersial · 07/04/2024 00:11

Never! I'm like a camel, and can go hours without a wee.

CJ0374 · 07/04/2024 00:12

I never need a wee at night! DH and I both sleep through the entire night without needing to 'go'.
The need to go during the night can be related to diabetes, poor pelvic floor, a uterine prolapse, UTI or multiple other issues.
If its a new problem, I'd ask your GP for a referral to a bladder physio.

changingchaali · 07/04/2024 00:12

@CointreauVersial hahaha good for you

I do, usually twice if I’m home alone. I have noticed this drops to once if I have company, and not at all if I’m in a tent 300 yards from festival loos.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/04/2024 00:13

I didn't when I was younger but started needing to go when I was pregnant (18 years ago) and never stopped.

Normally only once around 5am.

Or just drinking tons and a small bladder?

changingchaali · 07/04/2024 00:14

Not pregnant that's for sure lol

I believe I'm heading into menopause though. I used to get up when I was a teenager too so must just be how my bladder functions

I have none of these issues and usually wee once at night. I've had blood sugar tests recently too. In my case I don't always sleep well so I'm awake anyway. I'm not sure I'd wake up with the urge to go otherwise. I could probably wait until the morning.

Weenurse · 07/04/2024 00:15

Think about any bladder stimulants you may be having in the evening.
Tea, coffee, alcohol, juice, fizzy drinks including fizzy water, chocolate and spicy foods are all stimulants.

mathanxiety · 07/04/2024 00:16

Never.
I drink about 2L of water a day.
