mayonnaise or salad cream?

i used to like salad cream to make an egg salad 20 years ago
it is dated isnt it?
but just occasionally i think, a touch of salad cream would be nice

It can't be that dated if they still sell it. Who cares if it thought of as dated though. If you want it. Buy it

Love salad cream, can't stand mayo.

But don't tend to use S.C as a replacement for mayo in everything (so whilst S.C is a perfect substitute for mayo in a cheese or ham salad sandwich, it wouldn't work as a sub in a tuna pasta scenario)

S.C is fine with egg though so crack on.

They are different condiments for use in different ways. Mayonnaise to me is more of a lubricant - I'll use it instead of butter, or on something that would otherwise perhaps be dry (e.g. a chicken sandwich) but salad cream has a pronounced flavour from the acid and mustard. It's a brilliant addition to egg salad, great with cheese etc. DD likes it with quiche (though in all honesty she likes it with almost anything).

I love mayonnaise. Preferably Hellman's.

How do you make salad cream?

You buy it in the supermarket. Heinz do some. There are probably home brands too. We never made it.

Have rarely been more disappointed to eat a proffered egg mayonnaise 'anything', and then bite into vomit flavour salad cream. Includes that 2 years of chemo, surgery, and radiotherapy, so I do know what I like. Still dream of stuffed vol-au-vents to tempt my trashed up taste buds and digestive system to this day. Chicken, mushroom, prawn, in a gentle white sauce, with light pastry, and mayonnaise always. I love pickle and sour flavours, but you can send salad cream to Room 101.

Salad cream is a delight! I like mayo but salad cream is the bees knees in comparison!!

They both have their place. If I’m making tuna or egg mayo, I’ll always mix in both mayo and salad cream for the best taste.

Mayo all the way. I can take SC occasionally but I will plough through a large jar of Hellmans mayo in a month, no probs. However, I've also discovered that Aldi's 8% egg yolk mayo is a perfect dupe for Hellmans
All sandwiches get the Aldi mayo but Hellmans is reserved for having with chips.

I bought some salad cream and to me it doesn't taste the same, shame as I used to love it. Tbf it was the reduced fat version so maybe that was it.

I just love salad cream, my guilty pleasure a bag of crisps (any flavour but cheese and onion is my first choice) a spoon of salad cream in the bag, shake it up and enjoy…
