Mayo all the way. I can take SC occasionally but I will plough through a large jar of Hellmans mayo in a month, no probs. However, I've also discovered that Aldi's 8% egg yolk mayo is a perfect dupe for Hellmans Grin
All sandwiches get the Aldi mayo but Hellmans is reserved for having with chips.

Is that their own brand tube one?

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 04/04/2024 18:00

Use both - seriously, try it. Fab with tuna too.

theeyeofdoe · 04/04/2024 18:02

Both taste like someone has spat in your food, too gloopy.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other, they both have a place. You can’t beat a cheese, tomato and salad cream sandwich, mayo doesn’t cut it. Likewise I’d never have salad cream on a burger. TBH I’m a condiment freak and it’s actually chilli mayo on a burger, tartare sauce on fish, Caesar dressing on chicken.

Can’t beat a bit of variety.

They are different condiments for use in different ways. Mayonnaise to me is more of a lubricant - I'll use it instead of butter, or on something that would otherwise perhaps be dry (e.g. a chicken sandwich) but salad cream has a pronounced flavour from the acid and mustard. It's a brilliant addition to egg salad, great with cheese etc. DD likes it with quiche (though in all honesty she likes it with almost anything).

This sums it up for me

No. It comes in a squeeze bottle. I don’t really like getting my mayo supply in a squeeze bottle, I feel I never quite get every last bit out (a spatula around one the large Hellmans jars and it gets every scrap out of it 😜). However, at about a 1/3 of the price for Hellmans, I’ll live with it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 04/04/2024 18:52

if i have to get a squeezy bottle i try to take a knife to it afterwards!

anyway, i have no salad cream and it doesnt seem worth the expense just as a one off fancy i had today.
but perhaps
any recommendations ? apart from Heinz?

BouleDeSuif · 04/04/2024 19:05

I like tuna with salad cream, and mayonnaise on salads.

sciencemama · 04/04/2024 19:06

Mayonnaise with a bit of salad cream and paprika with boiled eggs in a sandwich is the one

I love salad cream dh hates it so we get mayo I treat myself sometimes and make "egg mayo" it's delicious.

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2024 19:09

Oo yes tuna and salad cream it's probably the vinegar that makes it delicious.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/04/2024 19:10

Love salad cream. Not with eggs, though. Full fat mayo and a smidge of mustard every time. And cress.

Oblomov24 · 04/04/2024 19:26

When I make a sandwich I do mayo one side, salad cream the other, works well.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 04/04/2024 20:15

Definitely salad cream if mashing in with boiled egg, far superior to mayo for an egg salad or sandwich.

ilovepixie · 04/04/2024 20:17

Neither. Both are disgusting.

Longlongtimeagooo · 04/04/2024 21:46

Depends what I'm eating!

Salad cream on salad... yum!

Tuna, salad cream, spring onion and black pepper on jacket potato, also yum!

When pregnant salad cream sandwiches! 🤣

To dip chips in, definitely mayo!

Tiger baton sandwich with chicken, shredded iceberg and mayo.

BLT definitely only works either way mayo.

Home made potato salad, half mayo, half salad cream and a big dollop of sour cream.

Longlongtimeagooo · 04/04/2024 21:50

Oh and I only like Heinz light mayo or Tesco light mayo. Hate the full fat versions and I hate the lighter than light versions too!

Also if eggs are sliced and with a salad then I would have salad cream. But if they are chopped up small then they need mayo and cress and to be in a sandwich, preferably seeded bread with butter!

Caswallonthefox · 04/04/2024 22:15

I like both
Salad cream goes on salads and mayonnaise is used as a chip dip or for mixing with pasta/rice.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 04/04/2024 22:24

Mayo all the way.
I also like to mix mayo with additional condiments...
Mayo and gravy
Mayo and Franks hot sauce
Mayo and soy sauce
Mayo mustard and ketchup
Mayo with mint sauce
Mayo with horseradish

treacledan71 · 04/04/2024 22:27

DH only likes salad cream where DS only likes mayo. I like both. I can never get tuna mayo like you do at take outs and resturants. They probably use tons of mayo dont they. Any tips?

SheepAndSword · 04/04/2024 22:35

I find salad cream too sweet and 'artificial' tasting

NeedySnail · 04/04/2024 22:38

We have both, they have different uses. I like egg mayo in a sandwich but would have salad cream on an egg salad.

Tuna, pasta, salad cream and mayo all mixed together was a favourite of the kids when they were small.

Mrsjayy · 04/04/2024 22:39

@treacledan71 . Mush your tuna to well mush more mayo than you need ever salt/pepper splash of malt vinegar and it tastes the same .
