Daughter has Reverted to Islam and wants to celebrate EID - Clueless please help

She’s home from Uni and would like to celebrate EID, (we live in a really white area, the closest authentic restaurant is 40 miles away) I’ve done a google search and there’s so much choice I’m not sure where to begin.

Could anyone help me please, are there some strict No’s as to what I shouldn’t cook (I know about Pork) is there anything that absolutely signifies EID (apologies if that isn’t the right terminology) that I should absolutely make?

If anyone has a little meal plan to share that would be awesome please.

Thanks in advance

Revert implies that she was once Muslim, stopped being Muslim, then went back to Islam.

Revert implies we are all, by nature and until we are misled, members of Islam. Each of us should live in submission to God's will.

If, as a Christian, I said 'I'm going back to the Christianity of my youth', I would be reverting to it.

If, having never been a Muslim, I said the Shahadah with understanding and intention, I would be reverting to Islam.

Same word, meaning slightly different according to context.

I come from a pretty Muslim country (though they're not the majority religion). It doesn't really matter, you can even eat McDonalds to break fast, which a lot of people do!

I think the UK has a vv severe Islamophobia / racism problem though. Islam, Christianity etc are regarded in the same light in my (multicultural, multiracial) country. Fundies of both religions have some pretty disgusting beliefs / practices but most people just practise casually.

fungipie · 03/04/2024 14:09

Which origin? Muslims are as varied and Christians, depends very much on the culture and area.

@Frenchy163 if you can tell us which culture the takeaways local to her uni belong to, we could find some recipes for you?

Middle Eastern food is also quite a broad term. Mansaf or maqlooba and ao on.
I am assuming you mean more lebanese which is popular in UK.
Search up few lebanese dishes and make small selection. Cold meze, hot meze, main to share. Doesn't need to be too complicated, many lovely simple dishes you can also nowadays buy in most supermarkets.

Usually on the day of eid. We go to eid prayer. Donate some money to charity, wear our best clean clothes and just be with loved ones. Food can be anything you like as long as it's halal and has no gelatine. The food differs within every culture. So maybe just make her favourite food. Oh and we take a insane amount of pictures on that day for memories.

Ha yes, absolutely agreed with lots of pictures 🤣

professionalnomad · 03/04/2024 14:28

This Eid definitely has a focus on sweet treats so a selection of her favourite deserts would be really nice

MagentaRocks · 03/04/2024 14:30

Mum wants to do something nice for her daughter shocker

I really don’t understand the posters that are berating the op for wanting to do something nice or suggesting her daughter sort it out herself.

I am an atheist but can support others who chose to follow a religion.

I hope you can find something nice to cook for your daughter and that she appreciates it.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 03/04/2024 14:30

OP

What words did you use to "search Google."??

I'm staggered you could not find anything

You said (we live in a really white area, the closest authentic restaurant is 40 miles away)

Whats that got to do with restaurants etc?? What are you implying as I'm confused?

ConJob · 03/04/2024 14:32

Frenchy163 · 03/04/2024 10:29

As an Athiest I’m no authority on this but I have been told if you’re a non Muslim and then become a Muslim then you’re a revert. Possibly someone with a lot more knowledge could explain.

I did see someone mention that the other day, thanks for clarifying.

What a vile thing to say.

Just to be clear, is your daughter a practising Muslim now and has she been observing the strict rules and fasting? It's an extremely important religious time of year, its a time to be extremely devout, and to focus on giving to others. Or is she just an ignorant girl that hasnt observed any of this, but now wants a party.

I mean for starts shes a woman so Im not sure where the deeply mysoginistic term "ignorant girl" for a grown woman comes from

But sure grown women are just ignorant girls who want a party...

The mass of suggestions about middle eastern or south asian food seem odd to me. OP's DS has converted to Islam, not to being middle eastern or asian.

People can eat whatever they want, we had fish and chips for one Eid last year!

Most Muslims are South Asian/South East Asians/ Middle Eastern/North African so naturally those foods are the ones Muslims would eat most of.

Most Muslims in the UK are from South Asian and Middle Eastern cultures hence the suggestions. It's not a conspiracy.

You must have missed the posts that said there's no one Eid or Muslim foods and that OP can just make she usually makes and ensure the meat is halal.

I'm South Asians but eat a very diverse range of food and a typical Eid for me included burgers, rack of lamb, roast potatoes, tacos, hummus, curry and lentils. Hope that helps!

Just because you dont believe in a God/god doesnt mean you cannot be courteous to others who do

I've skipped a whole load of posts so sorry if repeating or going over old ground.

I don't see how it's courteous to ask a load of randoms on the internet about food. Surely being religious is more than just diet!
OP should actually talk to her DD and ask her what she wants to do. I don't understand why she is trying to second-guess what the DD would like.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/04/2024 15:15

Oh really. I'm not religious, but I really don't get the comments on this thread! OP is simply supporting her DC whom she loves, it's not that tricky! And I wouldn't have a clue either on foot so would ask.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/04/2024 15:15

Food!

At least read all OP’s posts before commenting. It’s right there in her second one:

I wanted to cook and make it a surprise for her.

Nospecialcharactersplease · 03/04/2024 15:26

All these people who are offended by the idea of reverting are going to lose their minds when they hear about the (Catholic) idea of original sin.

For a Muslim following a halal diet is a fundamental part of the religion.

This is a new area for OP hence the asking for suggestions for celebration of new holiday for her with her daughter. Many people thinks there's specific "Islam" foods or "Eid" foods and as per many replies hopefully you can now appreciate there's no such things and anything as long as halal goes.

If we don't know something we should ask people who may know, there's nothing wrong in asking.

You clearly didn't have any advice for OP so I don't understand how your comment is any way helpful?
