Do you think there's ANYTHING at all on Mumsnet that people won't argue about?

I mean anything at all? 🤣 Names, cities, dogs, cats, clothes, pasta (of all things), the list is endless. Man, I love this place. 😀

well if you’re going to be judgey about it why are you here?

😆😆😆😆😆

Pluvas · 03/04/2024 08:46

My fav one recently was the do you own your own home if you have a Mortgage on it.......it just went round and round and round !

Cathbrownlow · 03/04/2024 08:48

Even if someone posts about a completely abusive partner, and everyone is saying LTB, you'll still get one saying 'oh, perhaps he's depressed, give him another chance'. Is that the same as arguing?

MorrisZapp · 03/04/2024 08:49

The Easter egg one finished me off

NoBunnyHome · 03/04/2024 08:53

The pasta one made me 😂

It's not the disagreeing that gets me - it's OK to disagree. It's that so many people seem unable to support their pov vs just slag off someone else's - which inevitably turns into personal attacks.

I've lost count of the time someone has countered 'I think X' with 'X is shit' rather than putting forward the argument for Y.

The art of debate is lost and, if we lose that, we lose the opportunity and ability to see things from other people's POV. Something I think we are, genuinely, losing.

But yes, I often stumble across mature threads where it has been, essentially, high jacked by two people behaving like toddlers over something trivial and neither seem unable to back down or back off.

I see that sort of thing and wonder how these people cope in real life.

Having said that, I can think of plenty of people IRL I avoid like the plague so I'm not surprised to see them on here.

Then I wouldn't recommend X :-D

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 03/04/2024 09:05

There was a name thread about Anna and no one didn't like it!

MyNameIsBatty · 03/04/2024 09:07

It's the only reason I read the threads. It makes me chuckle that people profess to being so tolerant when they refuse to accept another point of view, usually about something totally trivial!

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 03/04/2024 09:07

How dare you!

CordylineCapybara · 03/04/2024 09:09

People will post just to be contrary about anything. It makes them feel superior.

Superlambaanana · 03/04/2024 09:11

It's a lot easier to be assertive via a keyboard than irl so many people get worked up about stuff and say things that they wouldn't dream of irl.

It can be liberating to not just tell someone why you think they are wrong, but also spell out exactly why their pov/ attitude etc is really rotten.

Irl I'd probably run a mile, but felt comfortable enough on here to tell a man (invading a thread about violence against women to basically say it's all women's fault) exactly what I thought of him.

Topseyt123 · 03/04/2024 09:11

Nope! This is MN and some people could start an argument in an empty room.

Sometimes it is just comical.

AmeliaEarhart · 03/04/2024 09:18

The complete inability to recognise that people have different circumstances always boggles my mind. Like the thread about holiday clubs at the moment; surely it’s completely self-evident that they might work for some families and not for others? And yet it’s been rumbling in for pages…

TitaniasAss · 03/04/2024 09:18

The one's when people come on and disagree with someone so just say 'ignore the idiots' or 'ignore [insert poster here]', this is what you should do. etc. Baffling. 😂

OP posts:
BIWI · 03/04/2024 09:20

It's all compounded by posters who don't read the thread and just plop on to it with their own views, which then starts things off again.

Absolutely this!^

Agree with you about the art of objective debate being dead. It’s really sad actually. People taking it personally if you happen to hold a different belief to them? I don’t understand it. It’s not personal, it’s an alternative viewpoint, that’s all! Do they not debate at school or university any more?

And on the royal threads it’s exactly that x 1000!
And not just two people arguing against each other, it’s normally 10 against 1!

I think we should develop a Mumsnet catchphrase or sign where you can indicate that although you haven’t been dissuaded from your pov, you really can’t be arsed to argue anymore. Don’t know what that would be exactly but maybe a mooning bum cheek emoticon? 😂😂

TitaniasAss · 03/04/2024 10:17

Yes, people don't seem to be able to agree to disagree without hurling insults etc. It's a shame really because I remember some cracking threads on here (granted, a long time ago) when people were disagreeing and debating, asking questions, without tantrums and insults. That's not to say that there weren't some unbelievable bun fights back then too, because there absolutely were! It just seems to be that people will literally choose an argument over discussion even over the most innocuous things now.

Love the current thread about bill-splitting, there’s no argument there.

I’d guess if there’s no argument, there aren’t usually enough replies for the thread to show in Trending.

What a missed opportunity.

Thing is if you cut out the arguing 90% of the posts would vanish.

Threads of "I think X" followed by "I agree", "I agree" etc.

That isn't exactly very interesting is it.
