What’s the job/business you always wish you did?

My dream is a lovely cafe with a soft play. I’d hold baby/toddler classes. It would be aimed at people on maternity leave or with young children looking for somewhere to meet up with friends (without having to sit on uncomfortable chairs eating chicken nuggets and chips). What’s your thing you never did that you wish you had?

Own an artisan bakery and coffee shop. Big comfy sofas. Huge windows and a light airy feel. Freshly baked treats on the counter. Out in the countryside or on a quirky high street - I'm undecided on this one. Not that I've given it much thought....

I wish I'd worked harder in school and been a lawyer. All my local solicitor neighbours seem loaded and it's a respected career unlike mine which is seen as the colouring in department (marketing) and doesn't make that much.

I wish I owned a huge bookshop with a really amazing cafe on the top floor. The food that we would serve would be proper food with lots of veg & salads. There would be cakes too, but it would be healthy, tasty food, not trashy fast food or dry sandwiches.

I want to be a published author.

I’ve written drafts of several novels but have to work full time in something unrelated as getting published and paid enough to live on isn’t easy. That then impacts how much time I have to write!

Oh I’ve got loads!!

I always hankered over working for MI5.

I also would love to do big scale event planning like the Oscars or Glastonbury.

I did have a business plan that I wrote in a note book of a kids party place - it would have different themed rooms eg a underwater room which could be used with interchangeable props to have mermaid or octonauts or pirate parties. It would have a central kitchen to make the themed food. People could either just rent the room or we could provide hosts and do themed games, activities and party bags. There would also be a cafe at the front for parents and siblings with a small play area.

I'd like to have been a textile designer or stage set designer. Not much money in either career (not that there was in the different creative career I had). I do design textiles for my Etsy shop now though!

A bookshop but with big squishy sofas where people can curl up and read if they wanted to.
Though there's been a unit up for rent recently near to where I live (modern housing estate with a small row of shops) and I have thought how wonderful it would be to have a little co-working cafe. Just sell tea/coffee/cakes etc, but each table also have a plug etc so people who WFH can come and work alongside each other to get that social interaction.

Air hostess, book shop owner or some kind of companion for the elderly.

Axx · 03/04/2024 08:45

Secret shopper for hotels like the 4 seasons overseas.

Pest controller. Balance of science and problem solving and really helping people. Doesn’t pay enough though.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/04/2024 08:50

A couple of friends and I had a hankering to open a crafting shop. We looked into it at one point, but couldn’t make the numbers work. There was a shop available that would have been perfect and we could have surrounded ourselves with glorious yarn, fabric and all kinds of crafting stuff.

I'd love to be a writer , but mostly to win big on the lottery and never work again would be nice too! Neither of these things will happen.

Managing a historic house preferably with famous previous owners. I once worked for a heritage charity and it was a wonderful job. Sadly, restructuring put paid to it.

I just love the idea of poking about behind the scenes and discovering hidden books and crannies.

If it helps. It's a crap job. I left after 10 years for a big paycut. I don't regret it. I'd say 10% of my colleagues enjoyed it and were good at it (and that feels generous). 70% hated it but felt trapped in the career. The rest of us bit the bullet and left.
