What’s the job/business you always wish you did?

My dream is a lovely cafe with a soft play. I’d hold baby/toddler classes. It would be aimed at people on maternity leave or with young children looking for somewhere to meet up with friends (without having to sit on uncomfortable chairs eating chicken nuggets and chips). What’s your thing you never did that you wish you had?

Pipedream: novelist.
Next best thing: literary translator. I've translated two published children's books and absolutely loved it, but it's too hard to establish a steady workflow doing it full-time.
I'm in fiction editing, though, so in the right general ballpark and can't complain.

Fiction editing is my dream job 💞

I love to own a children’s bookshop. Comfy bean bags, sofas and soft lighting. Filled from floor to ceiling with all the books I loved as a child/to my children.

Burglar Bill, Cops and Robbers, Topsy and Tim, Buttercup Buskers, Giraffes can’t dance, Room on the Broom, Hugless Douglas….

That would be my happy place.

I would've loved to work in a zoo especially working with large safari animals elephants, rhino, giraffe and big cats.

I do accounts 😐

Am actually a financial journalist.

Working at Kew Gardens. Not sure whether horticulture or botany but I love the idea of going there to work every day. I wouldn’t change careers really but it’s definitely my daydream job.

I’d love to do facial reconstruction mainly in archaeology but would be happy to do it on any skull in any time period really, also DNA testing on old skeletons (again in an archaeology setting) to see if there’s any living relatives, both sound like interesting jobs to do!

A radio announcer, news reader, etc. Also reading the shipping forecast.
I wouldn't mind being a cast member on the Archers, either.
Just rock up in jeans and read aloud. Wonderful.

Ooh yes, this too!

I’d love to be a breakfast show DJ. An old friend does do news reporting on some local stations here.

Oh no that’s a shame.. Why is it on its backside now? Cost of living crisis?

A combination of things but that has been the icing on the cake. It got tough when things reopened after Covid and then all the stuff that has happened in the world since then has just amplified it. I've diversified repeatedly, I don't believe you should stand still doing the same things when your business is facing problems, but it isn't working. There isn't a problem with my products, there's just not enough people able to afford them (which pacts the prices I charge) and my margins are squeezed all the time as costs go up and up.

I've muddled through taking on temp work through various avenues for the last two years and have applied for so many actual jobs it's unreal. I can't get a look in.
