What’s the job/business you always wish you did?

My dream is a lovely cafe with a soft play. I’d hold baby/toddler classes. It would be aimed at people on maternity leave or with young children looking for somewhere to meet up with friends (without having to sit on uncomfortable chairs eating chicken nuggets and chips). What’s your thing you never did that you wish you had?

Pipedream: novelist.
Next best thing: literary translator. I've translated two published children's books and absolutely loved it, but it's too hard to establish a steady workflow doing it full-time.
I'm in fiction editing, though, so in the right general ballpark and can't complain.

I'd love to have been a carpenter. Unfortunately I'm incredibly clumsy and the one time we did any woodwork at school I got my finger caught by the drill, which I think says it all.

ImWearingPantaloons · 03/04/2024 20:23

Librarian or cattery owner.

ManchesterBeatrice · 03/04/2024 20:39

I'm actually doing it but some of these sound lovely.

Apart from the OP, that sounds horrifying to me, but everyone is different ❤️

I'm sorting of doing it, I run a handmade soft furnishings company. Unfortunately the business is on its backside after 12 1/2 years and because I left education at 16, and have been self employed so long, I can't go do any of the other careers I would be really good at. I can't afford time off to retrain either.

An actuary. Or an academic librarian. Or a (classical, solo/small ensemble) singer.

Bluebunnylover · 03/04/2024 21:00

A casting agent for movies!

Librarian or cattery owner.

OMG that's me too! Though if I'm honest I really just want to be a professional book reader and cat cuddler.

Some sort of alternative therapy.
Or an aid worker.

MuggedByReality · 03/04/2024 21:14

Sports journalist. Ideally Test Match Special commentator.

jamtartandpie · 03/04/2024 21:17

University lecturer (after I turned 20)
Clothes designer (early teens)
Pop star (9-10yo)

TroysMammy · 03/04/2024 21:18

Being a zoo keeper to something that didn't poo much that you'd need to use a wheelbarrow.

SagelyNodding · 03/04/2024 21:19

A florist! I'd love to work surrounded by beautiful flowers all day, creating beautiful arrangements for people's important events.
Or I'd run an animal sanctuary (if I had to choose it would be for donkeys).
But I'm a teacher, feeling increasingly ground down by the job...

Oh no that’s a shame.. Why is it on its backside now? Cost of living crisis?

A radio announcer, news reader, etc. Also reading the shipping forecast.
I wouldn't mind being a cast member on the Archers, either.
Just rock up in jeans and read aloud. Wonderful.

onwardandupwards · 03/04/2024 21:30

A midwife or a wedding planner!

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 03/04/2024 21:35

marmitegirl01 · 03/04/2024 19:10

Virgin air hostess in the 80s

Is that the specific airline, or the lifestyle choice?? 🤔

WmFnKdSg1234 · 03/04/2024 21:51

I wanted to be a nurse. However my mum, a nurse was very much against it.

I am an accountant.

LettersOfTheAlphabet · 03/04/2024 21:59

A scriptwriter for TV. I reckon it would be great fun to write for a soap, but imagine the immense pride Jed Mercurio must have felt about the buzz for the final of Line of Duty - something you've created that is eagerly anticipated by millions - can't imagine there's much better than that 🤩

topcat2014 · 03/04/2024 22:00

I'm opening an art gallery with cafe in two months.. choosing paint as we speak

Arrestedmanevolence · 03/04/2024 22:04

Theme park and/ set designer. To run the project to design the hogsmeade village in universal for example would be amazing or working out how to get the staging right for Hamilton.

Simonjt · 03/04/2024 22:05

I’d like to own a gym that is accessible, so the equipment would be accessible to all and the PTs would be able to work with the clients abilities to safely improve their fitness etc, and hopefully develop a programme to teach other PTs to be disability trained.

Purplehue13 · 03/04/2024 22:23

A forensic scientist. I actually went to college to start the process but ended up dropping out (I was not in a good place at the time and the tutor wasn’t very helpful or engaging!)

I work in a field that has nothing to do with science but enjoy my job and it does allow me to help and support people which I can relate back to forensics.

This is a wonderful idea. I hope you can make it happen one day!
