Please Help the toilet is blocked

Tried plunging it with 2 different plungers and it's totally blocked the plungers aren't working and poured hot water down. My Dad has tried plunging it too and said I'll have to get emergancy plumber out. I'm so embarrased. Is there a better style plunger that anyone knows that I should be using? I'm so embarrased having a plumber come in to our blocked poop toilet even though that's what they do. Any one have any advice what I could do please to unblock it without getting the plumber out.

Chucking a bucket of water down the loo from height to try and clear can be a very bad idea as the seals onto the soil pipe from the back of the pan can burst, as we found. It took a lot of fixing.

Hope you get it sorted.

thenightsky · 01/04/2024 16:59

I find biological liquid, such as Persil or Ariel, a huge slosh of it in very hot water in a bucket works. Pour it into the toilet from shoulder height and leave it for half a day.

Fill it more or less to the top and use a mop as a plunger
the weight of the extra water will add pressure to push the blockage down

It all depends on where the blockage is, one of mine blocks regularly but isn't actually blocked in the pipes behind the toilet, it blocks out about 5 ft from external wall where the pipe takes a right hand turn into the main sewer line, that is where the blockage happens, I regularly have to lift the manhole cover there and pour the water in there or rod it. Pouring stuff down the toilet seldom dislodges a blockage further on, are you sure it's in the toilet back pipe itself, do you have access to outside manholes to check what is going on out there?

BeyondMyWits · 01/04/2024 17:06

Where do people go to the loo when it is blocked?

I always had to go the bin bag on hand and scrape it out route if i couldnt get it to plunge out - because we only have one loo.

Pour a big bucket of water down from a height. Like a huge flush

Yes, with some washing up liquid in it. Keep doing it. It works eventually.

Dreamer2027 · 01/04/2024 17:11

It's still blocked done a few different things wrapped a bin bag around my arm and stuck my hand down there and put some washing powder down and got a bucket filled up with warm water and tried to quickly pour that down and its just blocked and full all way to top.

Last time it happened here (clogged with too much loo roll) I scooped out the excess water then unravelled a wire coat hanger. I bent it to a right angle and jiggled it about down the loo, it dislodged it.

This reminds me of the bread stick thread Grin

Ours blocked recently and we tried all the usual tricks and nothing worked. We then got a text from United utilities to say there was low water pressure in our area so we presume that was the problem. We left it a few hours and then kept flushing and it worked. So check online to see if any water issues in your area

NashvilleQueen · 01/04/2024 17:33

The pipe is quite wide so the blockage is usually near the loo itself. I would use a long handled mop and really give it a good going up and down until it clears.

2 cups white vinegar to 1 cup bicarbonate of soda does the trick. Understand you might not have these at home though!

We tried everything under the sun including plungers and nothing budged our blocked sink beyond the trap. Then I googled and found the vinegar and bicarbonate suggestion. It worked! Took a couple of attempts with it frothing and gurgling. The plunger finally helped free the blockage.

treacledan71 · 01/04/2024 17:45

I did the bicarb thing too and it worked.

Doyoumind · 01/04/2024 17:46

As PPs have said - washing up liquid and a bucket full of hot water.

EarlyBird12345 · 01/04/2024 17:46

During lockdown, with no shops open or plumbers available, I followed a youtube guide of using a plastic lemonade bottle. It worked with several plunges.

CeffylCoch · 01/04/2024 17:47

I second the plastic bag over a mop that someone suggested earlier

I have an old mop for this purpose;works every time

Gemz1010 · 01/04/2024 17:52

Have you had any success? I'm always so embarrassed too, luckily I haven't had to call a plumber yet.

OddBoots · 01/04/2024 17:53

Is it draining, even if very slowly?

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 01/04/2024 17:55

Do you know what the blockage is? Is it the expected human waste plus loo roll? Or is it something that shouldn't be down there

Dreamer2027 · 01/04/2024 18:01

Still blocked up I could go and get some bicarb and vinegar to try that I think shops are still open

Lift the manhole covers in your garden or driveway and see if it's blocked out there. If it us then borrow some drain rods from a friend or neighbour and start rodding. If you think that it might be blocked in the street then call the utility company you pay your sewerage bill to. Main sewers are their responsibility.

Stressed1011 · 01/04/2024 18:06

Lots of fairy liquid and fill the bowl with very hot water. Leave to sit for an hour or so it should soften everything… then flush..

Sometimes the only thing is to get on your marigolds and stick your hand down.

Aye this.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 01/04/2024 18:07

Is it downstairs? Quite possible that the pipe is damaged causing a step, hence the problem.
Appreciate you wanting to avoid a bh call out fee but prob best to call one out tomorrow.
