Travelator at the airport.

Especially when, as happened this morning, there is no one else on it because I love walking as fast I can and feeling like some kind of superhero striding out.

Conversely, I am most disappointed when there are lots of people and my childish glee has to be contained - and when someone has the temerity to block both lanes so I can't get past I feel deflated.

What childish things do you still get excited by as an adult?

OP posts:

Sometimes I let my bantam chickens sit on their eggs and hatch them (I also have a rooster) and dear God the excitement of a chick hatching is absolutely off the scale. The egg cheeps for a bit and then they poke a little hole then suddenly there’s this LITTLE TINY CHICK and it’s just absolutely magical and I can never quite get over it.

Back in the 60s we had chicks in an incubator in the school biology lab (in retrospect I do wonder why and what happened to them later). As they hatched lessons were noisier and noiser with the chirping.

Blowing one of those seed dandelions. My M parents never let me blow them when I was little. I love it if I find one and can blow it. I showed my DGC how to blow it too.

Gangstamummy · 31/03/2024 11:32

Burying my face in my horse’s neck and kissing his nose - so soft and the smell is amazing. Ditto for puppies.
Getting into bed when our heating is off (ie most of the time) and my DH has turned on the electric blanket.
Definitely shouting for an echo.
Dancing round the kitchen holding our Cavalier King Charles
Opening the curtains when it’s snowed overnight.
Finding a filled stocking at the bottom of the bed on Christmas morning (DH still does the honours)

So many of these but, yes, to double decker trains.

I love getting onto a car ferry. Love the confidence of the ferry workers with their "Keep moving" hand gestures. The thrill of the holiday is starting. Love getting on the Eurotunnel trains as well. Feels exciting and futuristic.

Can't resist a lighthouse. Love that sense of safety and history about them.

Love looking out to sea and tracking the ships on the horizon. All those people working hard jobs moving stuff around the world.

TeabySea · 31/03/2024 11:38

Same age as you OP.
I get excited by:
Spring arriving
Putting the first footstep in fallen snow
Watching snow fall
The smells of freshly baked bread, or freshly roasted coffee
Watching goats and lambs leap about
Listening to or watching my favourite band
Getting answers right on Mastermind or UC
Going to someone's house and discovering they have a cat
Kicking leaves in the autumn
Finding miffy and hello kitty merch yesterday
Walking into a strong breeze
Paddling at the beach or jumping over the tiny shoreline waves

Easter eggs
I gave up chocolate and sweets for Lent so really looking forward to tucking in.

I tucked in ( ate half an Easter egg ) and now feel sick. 😂

Compash · 31/03/2024 11:46

So many leaf kickers/jumpers here! Which is why, dog walkers, you should NEVER 'stick and flick' it! 🐶💩

Driving over a hump-back bridge: if there are no other road users around I love to accelerate just enough to get that stomach-drop as you go over the top.

We have a fantastic little bridge nearish us, and I often go the slightly longer route round to it just to get that tummy flop feeling. It's ace.

I'm 58 and if there is a pile of leaves or grass cuttings I will kick it.

My aunt emigrated to Australia in the 60s and for years she missed kicking through the piles of leaves in autumn - she called it 'having a kick and a shiver.'

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 31/03/2024 11:56

Back to school for me was ALL about the special new clean jotters and pens.

Still love a new notebook, even if I don't have to cover them in brown paper now Grin

Don't get me started on mini highlighter pens in fluorescent colours - LOVE!

Snow - never saw it as a child.

First time I saw it was when I had moved to England for university and I have always been amazed by it since.

TulipTuesday · 31/03/2024 12:06

Puppets or just someone doing a silly voice for a cuddly toy makes me so happy and I giggle like a toddler.

Earlier in the year we had a sudden thick covering of snow at around midnight, DS (18) came to get me so we could go out and be the first to play in the fresh snow. We were out on the green outside our house building snowmen and trying to quietly throw snowballs in the dark. It was the best fun.

DianaTaverner · 31/03/2024 12:06

Glass lifts. The Elizabeth Line has diagonal lifts! So exciting!

Also pond dipping, especially if there are newts. Newts and their tiny toes are the absolute best.

Lovely thread OP!

Mine:
Full moon
Snow Falling
Plane take-offs / landing
Hawks / Jays swooping through my garden.
End of school term- probably more excited for my children.

Jumping in waves.

TulipTuesday · 31/03/2024 12:11

Oh and playing Pooh sticks, we have a NT property nearby with some great bridges for Pooh sticks. DH and I love to add a Pooh stick tournament to all our walks. We’re 44.

Arraminta · 31/03/2024 12:11

I'm always so grateful that I never quite grew up. I still love a fairground, a spin on the Waltzers and candyfloss on a stick. Deep blanketing snow still fills me with joy, I absolutely have to wrap up warm and go for a walk in it. I still happily blow dandelion clocks and long grass blades between my thumbs to make them shrill. I still build sandcastles, hunt for sea glass and play French cricket on the beach. Christmas trees are magical to me, we have two eight foot trees and I cram them with with lights, tinsel, glittery decks and more tinsel. I love to sit in the dark with a cup of tea and just admire them glittering and glimmering away.

ladygindiva · 31/03/2024 12:23

At almost 50 I am ridiculously excited by
Snow
Getting a double yolk egg
Getting undercharged at the till

gettingolderbutcooler · 31/03/2024 12:23

A helium balloon which I can suck on and speak with a squeaky voice.

Oh and shouting in a tunnel to get an echo

We went through some big tunnels on a bike ride yesterday and I didn't care what the passers by thought of the 38 year old woman shouting "wooooooooo!!!" as she went through it.

JoeLovesGina · 31/03/2024 12:28

Pressing the button on my hoover that winds the cord in 😂

Vitriolinsanity · 31/03/2024 12:28

I live travelators! I too do the superhero stance then bound along them.

I like an empty beach in the early morning or late afternoon.

I bloody love the Tip.

I love having flowers delivered.

Andnowshesatoddler · 31/03/2024 12:28

The smell of a new stack of post stick notes and wafting through them.
Love getting in the car by 6am and going on an adventure - 6am feels like the world is just waking up and it smells fresh.
Watching Winnie the pooh with my daughter.

DodoTired · 31/03/2024 12:29

Bubbles!

i also do like travelators, and still like automatic doors.

oooh that’s a good one!!

Callipygion · 31/03/2024 12:30

Watching the Red Arrows practising - they used to be based near us, so we saw them quite regularly and it was always a thrill. They’ve been moved to another base now so we don’t see them so often any more. ☹️
