Travelator at the airport.

Especially when, as happened this morning, there is no one else on it because I love walking as fast I can and feeling like some kind of superhero striding out.

Conversely, I am most disappointed when there are lots of people and my childish glee has to be contained - and when someone has the temerity to block both lanes so I can't get past I feel deflated.

What childish things do you still get excited by as an adult?

""""Dayyyyyyyy oh.....dayyyyyy...ayyyyy oh....." 🤣

Seeing a tractor or a steam train
Really strong wind and trying to gulp in air or lean in to it
Playing in the sea (running away from the wave)
Take off on a plane
Rollercoasters
Proper storms with hail or heavy heavy rain
When the river floods the flood plain and the whole field is full of water
Swings
Petting zoos and seeing new born lambs

PotatoPudding · 31/03/2024 09:04

Kicking piles of leaves.

ItsMintUpNorth · 31/03/2024 09:05

Wave pools.

Went to a water park abroad last week and spent half the day in the wave pool I just love them!

Weepingwillows12 · 31/03/2024 09:05

Oh and I went down the stairs on my tummy head first the other day to demonstrate what we used to do as kids to my kids. Then did it again when they were in bed as I enjoyed it 😂

Making a fire and keeping it going

Oh and shouting in a tunnel to get an echo

We recently walked the Monsal trail (well part of it) in Derbyshire and walked through a really long tunnel. I couldn’t resist shouting “woooo woooo” (like a train whistle). I’m 57 and my husband thought I had gone barmy - again!

Also like Being first to step on a frozen puddle, or make the first footsteps in a snowy path.

Flivequacle · 31/03/2024 09:09

Swimming in a lake or river (when pollution levels allow!)

Popcorn at a film

Going downhill really fast on a bike

Campfires

I absolutely love little miniature things, have been known to squee "it's so CUTE!!!" My DP is highly amused! Also love so many things from the natural world. If a volcano is erupting, that's just so exciting, or a storm happening!

@xSideshowAuntSallyx @Whiskers4 @Musicaltheatremum You would love this YouTube channel I recently found, Ted Coningsby, where you can see jets taking off and doing displays most days of the week from our RAF military bases. Magical! Had the Red Arrows doing a half hour long display the other day.

Knowing how much potential that one little seedling holds ... 🌱

Escalators on the London Underground. Leaving a village in the middle of nowhere and going to London for the first time was sooooooo exciting as a young teenager and I loved it. Still do.

Stepping outside on a chilly morning and pretending to blow smoke like a dragon as you can see your breath.

So funny. We used to love doing this.

I threw myself onto a huge pile of autumn leaves last year in a park. It wasn't as cushioning as I'd thought and I landed with a thud and ended up with loads of maggots in my hair!

Love being on the top of the bus at the front. When I get my older persons free bus pass I'm going to take loads of long bus rides to unfamiliar places.

Also like to get soaking wet in the rain and jump hard into puddles but only close to home so I can get a hot shower quickly afterwards.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2024 09:14

Oh yes, most of these things. I'm 63 and still very happy to channel my inner child. Up escalators are perhaps even better than travelators, though they're usually not empty enough to run up. Getting very muddy while gardening is more fun than it probably should be (which is just as well as I've no idea how some people manage to garden without getting filthy).

Any form of messing about on or in the water...I don't get to do nearly enough of that now. Must do something about that when I retire.

There were some bridges we always had to play Billy goats gruff on when DD was small...I miss that.

I'm the same age as the OP and a leap year baby. As I'm getting older I get even more excited than I did as a kid when it's a leap year and I actually get a birthday!

LunaNorth · 31/03/2024 09:17

I heard an ice cream van the other day for the first time in years, and I got as excited as I would have been as a kid.

No intention of buying one, but hearing the little tune on the air was a real lift.

Dewdilly · 31/03/2024 09:18

This is a great thread!

Snow - the first flakes falling.

Snow - stepping out to make the first footprint when it’s lying.

Sitting at the front on the top deck of a double-decker bus.

Seeing a rainbow.

squashyhat · 31/03/2024 09:19

I'm 63 and I love
A really heavy fall of snow (don't get it often in SE England)

Clearing the little dams that form in streams after heavy rain and watching the water swoosh away

Really loud and close thunder and lightning

Fireworks

I'm not a good flier but I also love watching planes. I follow a pilot on Instagram and like nothing better than spending a couple of hours with Flightradar and BigJetTV on YouTube on a stormy day at Heathrow. The skill involved in getting those huge planes down safely is amazing.

user1471538283 · 31/03/2024 09:22

Finding pennies! My DF always got me to pick them up for luck and I used to do it with my DS. You don't see many anymore but yesterday I saw and picked up two! I was so delighted!

Going anywhere. Years ago when I travelled for meetings that finished last thing I would stay in the city to shop and have dinner out. Any then grin all the way home.

MintyYoghurt · 31/03/2024 09:22

New ride at Thorpe Park! Can't wait!!!

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 31/03/2024 09:22

Love this thread

Sitting upstairs at the front of the bus (as long as nothing else too dodgy going on up there)
Getting the Tube, I don't live in London
Cobbled streets (my toddler called them Gobblestones)
Clean sheets on the bed
Deer early on a summers morning

Clawdy · 31/03/2024 09:23

Remembering an old song from school, and realising I still know the words! "Daisies are our silver, Buttercups our gold..." !

tracktrail · 31/03/2024 09:24

Same age here, too

The Red Arrows- I'll run out to watch them fly overhead
Steam Trains - Aim for steam train rides on holiday
Boat trips - harbour, river, sea trips, seal/ bird trips on holiday- also sailing if I get the opportunity
Classic Car shows

Theinjuredcleaner · 31/03/2024 09:25

What a lovely thread!

Like a pp, I get ridiculously excited by spring. Seeing the first daffodils, buds on the trees, lambs playing in the field, blossoms on the trees. It's like the earth is slowly waking up.

Sitting at the front on the Heathrow shuttle bus service is also a thrill.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/03/2024 09:27

Sitting in the front seat on the top deck of a double decker bus. Only really do it when I have the Gdcs in tow - always exciting for them since they rarely use buses at home. I have been known to take 2 buses with them to wherever, when it’d be quite a bit quicker to drive, since buses are part of the ‘experience’.
