Hot Cross Buns - found any good ones?

I'm sitting here eating a Sainsburys St Clemens & Honey hot cross bun and it's sublime.

What are your recommendations?

I'm not telling you the actual best place to go because then the bakery will run out before I get there. I bought loads on Wednesday and they are now all mysteriously gone.

But I will give you a clue - go to a real bakery that doesn't use industrialised processes to make pappy air-inflated bread but prides itself on bread that contains nothing but flour, water and yeast. They will do excellent HCBs

It may be controversial, but the Co-op chilli hot cross bun is delicious!

notanothernana · 30/03/2024 09:40

Homemade

determinedtomakethiswork · 30/03/2024 09:57

Marks & Spencer's blueberry hot cross buns.

fluffycloudalert · 30/03/2024 09:58

Morrisons lemon drizzle.

MadamVastra · 30/03/2024 09:59

Marks luxury ones

Clemfandango95 · 30/03/2024 09:59

Another vote for M&S blueberry buns. Elite.

sfgthjo · 30/03/2024 09:59

Sainsburys did some gorgeous choc orange ones, I ordered online but they weren't in the usual packaging, they were in the bakery style packing and they were HUGE, like twice the height of their other ones! Haven't seen them online since!

Queencam · 30/03/2024 10:00

Gails

DuesToTheDirt · 30/03/2024 10:22

Chilli, wow, not heard of that!

I'm thinking there are too many hot cross buns for me to try in one season. I should have started earlier Grin.

Tesco’s finest St Clement
Aldi or Lidl chilli
M&S caramel was more like a pudding but delicious

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/03/2024 10:29

Any non-buggered about ones are fine for me.

So not the pack of ‘lemon and white chocolate’ ones I picked up in a hurry the other day! IMO white chocolate is the work of Satan anyway.

I did try one, but the rest will be going out for the birds.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 30/03/2024 10:35

Ooooo do the co-op do chilli cheese ones? Been looking everywhere for some, they were in all shops a couple of years ago and none this year.

MumChp · 30/03/2024 10:36

Cant buy them here so homemade.

Techno56 · 30/03/2024 10:38

I don't like the usual HCB (sultanas - urgh) but can confirm I've tried aldi white choc and raspberry (white choc was absent so not great), biscoff (ok), marks caramel (very nice) and finally marks triple chocolate which are the absolute best 😋

TeabySea · 30/03/2024 10:40

Waitrose Belgian (?) Dark chocolate . Can't tell you exactly what they're called because we've eaten them all.

BeaRF75 · 30/03/2024 10:41

M&S. But only the traditional ones. All these weird flavoured ones sound horrible.

M&S. But only the traditional ones. All these weird flavoured ones sound horrible.

At DD’s recently there was the remains of a pack of hot chilli HCBs or similar, picked up by mistake by DD’s MiL.

Truly horrible. Most of them went in the food waste bin. We’d have put them out for the birds, only we thought hot chilli wouldn’t agree with them.

I do thoroughly enjoy hot chilli in its rightful place, but oh dear…

RubyGemStone · 30/03/2024 11:06

I love the M&S Apple ones or their cheese ones. I've never been a HCB fan until discovering these a few years ago and will buy the apple ones especially whenever I see them.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 30/03/2024 11:07

M & S used to do chilli ones but not for a few years. The co-op ones are amazing!

Sparklyhat · 30/03/2024 13:50

Tesco finest Red Leicester ones

marshmallowfinder · 30/03/2024 14:09

Waitrose white chocolate and lemon. Yum! Also their apple ones are gorgeous.

I must thank you OP, for writing "I'm sitting..." instead of the ubiquitous "I'm sat..." (Eternal pedant. Sorry!) Enjoy your lovely bun.

crockofshite · 30/03/2024 14:10

Gail's - fab-U-lush

ASighMadeOfStone · 30/03/2024 14:15

M&S luxury.
But I've a kilo of Paul Hollywood's recipe on its second prove at the moment. I always followed Delia's recipe (as I tend to for all traditional bakey classics) but PH's we decided were better.
I don't want any newfangled varieties.

BouleDeSuif · 30/03/2024 14:20

I usually make them with a bun dough recipe from an old Jane Grigson recipe book, but this year I'm going to experiment and do hot cross scones. (Mostly because I'm short for time and cba to prove the dough.)
