Staying in a hotel after a flight or come home?

Next month we are going on holiday
The flight is 6 hours
We arrive back at 11.20pm
Every time we have done this route there's always a hour delay (no idea why )
So normally it's after midnight when we land.
The hotel is opposite airport and it's £66
Or taxi home (well Uber around £40 ) but could be more if they increase the fare and it's a Friday night .
The drive home would be around 30 mins approx
What would you do ?
Book into hotel or get taxi home ?
I can't decide

I'd stay over before a flight if it made sense but I wouldnt stay in a hotel on the way back for a 30 minute journey.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 27/03/2024 15:00

I'd go home, always do, had many flights where we've landed at 2/3am and then driven home, from one airport it's a 2hr drive, from another 1hr. At that stage we just want to end the travelling and be home.

BranchGold · 27/03/2024 15:00

I’d go home.

Genuinely wouldn’t contemplate staying at an airport hotel at the end of the holiday.

30 minutes and you aren’t even doing the driving!

Yeah we have the hotel booked before the flight but wasn't sure about the way home

Just go home. I thought it would be a 2 hour drive but 30 mins is nothing.

Saschka · 27/03/2024 15:04

For 30 mins I’d just get in the taxi! By the time you’ve got to the hotel, checked in and got into your room, it will be almost 30 mins anyway, surely?

concernedchild · 27/03/2024 15:05

Why on earth would you get a hotel for a half hour drive 🤣🤣

PuttingDownRoots · 27/03/2024 15:08

For taxi just go home.
If you were driving it would be weighing up tiredness etc.

BloodyAdultDC · 27/03/2024 15:09

It wouldn't cross my mind to book a hotel either way for an early or late flight if it's 30 mins to the airport!

The only time I did I was flying to the US from an airport 2 hours from home by train at stupid o'clock in the morning - that was only because I couldn't have got to the airport on time otherwise.

My local airport is 45 mins away and I don't know anyone, ever, who has stayed overnight before or after flying, even late at night. Why are you thinking this is so essential op?

ohletthesunshine · 27/03/2024 15:09

We just do as we always worry the Uber prices will go sky high
We are staying at the airport hotel night before because it's a 6am flight and don't want the hassle
That's costing us £100 so I guess makes sense not to fork out for another hotel

Get a taxi. You’d still have to go home the next day anyway, so you’re just putting it off for the sake of spending 6-7 hours sleeping in a crappy airport hotel.

What hassle though, seriously? Get up, get in the car/taxi, drive to the airport, done.

I just can't see any logic (unless your street/local roads/motorway is subject to frequent and unexpected closures it's just another expense. Go early and save the £100 to spend on a meal while you're on holiday!)

Rosesanddaisies1 · 27/03/2024 15:38

it's a 30 minute drive. Honestly, blows my mind what people consider sometimes. i wouldn't ever stay at an airport hotel, just drive early in the morning - it's 30 mins! It'll take you that long to get from the hotel to the terminal.

ohletthesunshine · 27/03/2024 16:05

@Rosesanddaisies1 it's a small airport so the hotel is directly opposite ,2 mins walk
It's really convenient for the way there

You're trying so hard to justify this, if you really want to do it, do it.

Wardrobedoorsarewood · 27/03/2024 16:07

On the way back? No way Jose

SheepAndSword · 27/03/2024 16:10

You seem to have already made up your mind.

InTheRainOnATrain · 27/03/2024 16:12

Wouldn’t ever consider this and used to land from that states at that sort of time, following a 9 hour flight, with a baby/toddler in tow. 30 minutes is nothing. Prebook a taxi with a local company and agree a fixed price, job done.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 27/03/2024 16:15

Definitely home! Apart from the cost, you'll have to faff around with unpacking what you need and STILL have the journey home the next morning. I'd still say home even if it was 1.5 hours.

rookiemere · 27/03/2024 16:17

Taxi home - by that stage you'll just be desperate for your own bed and it would be a bit dispiriting to stay in a hotel and then have to get home. Plus presumably it would be the cost of the hotel plus a taxi if you stayed.

MultiplaLight · 27/03/2024 16:26

You have more money than sense.

£100 for a hotel for 6am flight half an hour away.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 27/03/2024 16:31

Just pre-book a taxi to pick you up so you know how much it will cost. I would never stay overnight for a 30 min trip home and the taxi shouldn’t be too expensive. No one is forcing you to use Uber. I would only stay in the hotel if you have to drive and think you will be too tired to drive safely.

takeitorleave · 27/03/2024 16:33

Much nicer to wake up in your own bed and then have a lie in or get up and sort stuff out at your leisure than have to get up and then still go home. Midnight isn't even that late...

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/03/2024 16:37

I often do it the night before a holiday but never after, even if it's the middle of the night. How would you get home the next day? Presumably there are still costs involved that you haven't factored in when comparing hotel and Uber cost.

HesterPrincess · 27/03/2024 16:37

I'd want my own bed, not a grubby airport hotel room.
