Staying in a hotel after a flight or come home?

Next month we are going on holiday
The flight is 6 hours
We arrive back at 11.20pm
Every time we have done this route there's always a hour delay (no idea why )
So normally it's after midnight when we land.
The hotel is opposite airport and it's £66
Or taxi home (well Uber around £40 ) but could be more if they increase the fare and it's a Friday night .
The drive home would be around 30 mins approx
What would you do ?
Book into hotel or get taxi home ?
I can't decide

If it was an hour and a half + then staying over would make sense. For half an hour absolutely not! Pre book a taxi as others have said, you'll know the price and you'll also know there will definitely be someone available at the right time, rather than waiting around for an Uber.

Your choice on the pre stay hotel, personally I can't see it being worth £100 to save half an hour when you'll already be getting up in the middle of the night, what's a 3am start vs 3.30! But it's your money and your decision either way.

Staying at a hotel to avoid driving 30 minutes after the flight? You would be at home by the time you complete check in and go to your room.

Take the Uber, an extra night in a hotel when you are tired is pointless. Especially if you are not even driving.

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/03/2024 17:25

Wouldn't consider a hotel for a 30 minute drive at all, it's a quick journey.

I've got an 11 hour flight back in a few weeks and then a 6 hour drive home. I am considering alternatives for it, but looks like I'll have to drive, which will be a long one.

You'd be paying for a hotel room then paying for the taxi still next day? It doesn't really make sense...

Have you considered driving yourselves and parking in the long stay car park? That's what we do - one hour's drive and three weeks parking. Meet & Greet will move your car to its own spot for the duration then bring it out for you coming back. Surely that's cheaper than two hotel stays?

SheepAndSword · 27/03/2024 17:45

Not sure that OP is bothered about cost.

It's nice to get home after a holiday though, only benefit I can think of with the hotel is breakfast (which might not be that good anyway)

Axx · 27/03/2024 17:49

I'd go home.

We flew for 14 hours overnight then had a two hour drive home. Had a coffee on the flight once we woke up, picked car up and came home.

Don't you drive late at night? A 6 hour flight isn't bad at all unless it's an over nighter.

rookiemere · 27/03/2024 17:57

I normally love staying in a hotel, but at the end of a holiday it just feels like a chore. Airport hotels are so utilitarian as well that it's never a treat.

KenAdams · 27/03/2024 18:23

For 30 mins? Are you joking?

Geebray · 27/03/2024 18:25

Don't book an Uber then. Book with a reputable cab service who will quote you an amount beforehand.

Caspianberg · 27/03/2024 18:29

No. It’s a taxi so you aren’t even driving 30 mins.

I 100% would go home. That way you are home, and can wake whenever and start next day at home sorting out luggage and getting food shop delivered. Otherwise you wake and still aren’t home.

SayFuckTheLemonsAndBail · 27/03/2024 18:36

I've got serious chronic health issues and I would drive home - even if I did have to drive myself. Half an hour is nothing. I thought you were going to say three hours!

My nearest airport is that far away and I'd genuinely laugh if someone suggested getting a hotel there. By the time you've faffed around checking in and lugged your bags around, settled into the room and got all your stuff out of your luggage that you need for an overnight stay, you could be walking in your front door.

unsync · 27/03/2024 18:44

I always pre-book a car, both ways. If you work out the cost of petrol / parking against getting a car service, there's not much in it, and leaving the driving to someone else is great.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 27/03/2024 18:44

A hotel before an early flight feels like a treat - dinner in the restaurant, in the holiday mood etc

A hotel after the holiday is not - just get the taxi and be happy when you wake up in your own bed!

JoJothegerbil · 27/03/2024 18:45

We've got a 2.5 hour drive next week after landing at 10.30pm. We're overnighting in the airport hotel. For a journey of 30 minutes I'd go home.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 27/03/2024 19:16

If the Uber increases to the price of the hotel room you are still quids in.

How would you get home the next morning and how much would that cost?

I would definitely just go home after the flight.

ohletthesunshine · 28/03/2024 07:46

Booked a taxi from our local service and quoted £28 so that's not bad
Still sticking with the hotel before flight as there's a nice Italian in the hotel so will be a little treat

The night before is good, no stress and starts the holiday early

Beezknees · 28/03/2024 08:33

I'd go for taxi home as drive isn't that far.

determinedtomakethiswork · 28/03/2024 09:15

But if you add up the cost of the hotel and the cost of getting home the next day, that has to be less than the cost of the Uber doesn't it? I would want to go straight home.

JRM17 · 03/04/2024 19:59

For the sake of 30mins I don't think there's even a question there.

Abbyant · 03/04/2024 20:02

Go home to your own home and bed by the end of the holiday you just want to be home and 30 minutes is practically nothing.

sonjadog · 03/04/2024 20:03

No question, I would go home. I would probably just drive myself and park at the airport long stay parking, but maybe you don’t drive?

Deathbyfluffy · 03/04/2024 20:05

I always try and book a hotel before, but rarely bother afterwards - I just want to get home!

HeddaGarbled · 03/04/2024 20:14

Driver decides. If they want a drink on the flight or thinks they will be too tired, that’s up to them.

My H would drive it for the sake of saving the hotel costs. If I had to drive, I might go for the hotel because I know I would be very tired.

Haribosweets · 03/04/2024 20:15

No way for a 30 min journey! I would be going home on return and actually, wouldn't even do it for the 6am flight! Last year I landed at 2am ish and had a 2 hour drive. Got home just before 5am but just wanted to get home!
