Just that really!

28 or younger.

NewName24 · 25/03/2024 18:56

Under 25 or 26 would seem young to me, for anyone to become a parent.

Probably under about 28. Women too. Really can’t see why you’d have kids so young. My DP was 22 - bonkers.

One reason is you never know what the future will hold. A family member was a 19 year old dad and only just got to see his children grow up and two grandchildren born. If he had been 28 he'd have left behind teenage children.

<24 I think.

Couples who’d like to set up home and have their first baby when they’re in their early twenties would find it difficult financially these days.

When I was 22 in the mid 1990s you could get a small 3-bed house in my home town for £75k. So a couple earning 30k between them who’d managed to save a few hundred quid as a deposit could get on the property ladder without too much bother. A few of my schoolfriends did just this.

That same house now costs £275k and a young couple might earn £50k between them. The sums don’t work.

No wonder men and women are putting off parenthood.

Arielhills · 25/03/2024 18:58

Under 25 is a young parent I think but that doesn’t equal too young if that makes sense. My friend had her first at 23 and it felt so so young at the time but probably because I was renting a tiny flat for an extortionate amount and spending all my spare money on going out 😅 I couldn’t fathom doing it myself at that time in my life! She’s an amazing mum though, managed to complete a masters and buy her first home while bringing up a little one, nothing but admiration for her!

Megapint · 25/03/2024 18:58

My Dh was 19 when our eldest was born. It was young but he had a good job and it pushed us to buy our first house. Turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to us. I don't think 25 is particularly young and I don't think having kids young is a bad thing

MinnieTruck · 25/03/2024 19:00

Anything under 20 imo.

My children’s dad was 25 when we had our first, 26 when we had our second

BCBird · 25/03/2024 19:01

25ish

What a patronising comment.

K0OLA1D · 25/03/2024 19:03

Anything under 20-23

DP was 22, I was 21.

MammaTo · 25/03/2024 19:15

Id say 25 and under for sure. At a push I’d go as far to say 28 and under is quite young to me, but it depends on the person. Me and my partner have been together since we was 16 but we didn’t feel ready till we was about 30 onwards. But some 26-27 year olds are quite grown up, where as we was not.

"Bonkers" implies you think that anyone having a child in their early 20's is making a bad decision.
I had mine then and am extremely happy I did, and while I personally wouldn't want children hitting 40, I recognise that for other people that's the perfect time for them and who am I to presume otherwise.

When people believe that there's only one "best way" to do things, and any other option just falls short of the ideal, it isn't easy to be around them.

SeaAndCakes · 25/03/2024 19:19

Under 30.

(Not saying it's good or bad - just that most first-time dads I see now seem to be over 30.)

Canwehaveitall · 25/03/2024 18:54

On the flip side when I know of people having babies in their late 30s and 40s I wonder why you'd want to be having babies at that age.

This - I would have had my wonderful children younger if I could have

booktokbear · 25/03/2024 19:22

It definitely depends on area. Where we used to live in Cheshire most parents were at least 30-35 having kids. So we felt normal.

Moved more rurally and we feel so old! Kids in my DS's class have grandparents our age 😂

icelollycraving · 25/03/2024 19:26

19 and under, shockingly young. 25 and under, young.

IggOrEgg · 25/03/2024 19:26

Mm, 23 or younger probably. Under 25 is still young but I wouldn’t really notice it I don’t think.

romany4 · 25/03/2024 19:28

Under 23 for men.
My DH was 25 and I was 21 when we had our first child.
Ds became a dad at 24. He's a very good dad.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 25/03/2024 19:31

I’d say under 25. But I’d also think someone was ‘young to be a dad’ if they were older than 25 but had an immature lifestyle like still living with their parents, no job etc

lul1 · 26/03/2024 07:39

Interesting.

Do you think 26 was young for a mum 14 years ago or just now? I didn't think I was young?

usernother · 26/03/2024 07:44

PuttingDownRoots · 25/03/2024 18:50

DH and I were 27 and 25 when we had DD1, who is now nearly 13 (and DD2 is 11). We were quite young... but that wasn't a bad thing. We met young, so were ready young.

I find it amusing my mother was considered quite old to have her first... at 29!

So was I at 28!

usernother · 26/03/2024 07:45

I'd say under 20. I definitely don't think under 25 is too young.

Some people don't meet the person they want to have kids with until then .
25 is young by today, s standards but i don't uts too young under 20 would be very young imo

MuchTooTired · 26/03/2024 08:10

Probably 25/26 and under I’d consider young. Not that I think they’re too young to be a fantastic parent because everyone is ready for it at different ages, I’m probably basing it on when I felt ready to have kids.
