I had it growing up in the 70s. Quite liked it but the liver had an unusual texture. Not sure I'd fancy it these days

I do, but it's once in a blue moon. I think the last time I had it I got the liver from Asda

When growing up in the 6os and 70s, liver with mash and greens was usual, a big slab of lab or pig's liver. Quite hard.

I still eat warm chicken liver salads. Delicious.

Yes from time to time.
I like offal cos it’s cheap and nutritious. But don’t see it in the shops very often.

Smells like manna from Heaven.

Tastes like leather from Hell.

BirthdayRainbow · 24/03/2024 21:05

I have it sometimes.

in a dish with onions and then baked in the oven. Much better than trying to fry it without making it tough.

Aworldofmyown · 24/03/2024 21:06

I actually like liver and mashed potato - don't eat it often, though.

Coldupnorth87 · 24/03/2024 21:06

Yep, had a liver & mushroom sandwich the other day. They serve liver & bacon in a cafe near here too.

Really good for you. I'm mostly veggie but had low iron, so this & black pudding!

Arielhills · 24/03/2024 21:07

I worked in a greasy spoon cafe about 12 years ago and the only ones who ever ordered liver and bacon were the older regulars. I wonder if it’s just one of those things that has fallen out of popularity with younger people? I never tried it because I was flirting with vegetarianism at the time 😅😂 love me some pate though but not sure about the texture of liver itself..

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 24/03/2024 21:08

It was a regular meal we had growing up (80s) but I've never cooked it. It wasn't until many years later a friend ordered liver in an Italian place I realized liver didn't have to be completely grey and tough... But yes, I think it's a meal consigned to the previous generation

OfMiceandWomen · 24/03/2024 21:08

My husband would eat it but I don’t cook it because I don’t like it.
He eats it if it’s on a menu in a restaurant.

OldTinHat · 24/03/2024 21:08

My local pub serves it as a regular dish (not a special) and there are three people in a group of ten of us who order it every time. Not me though...bleurgh!

merrywidow · 24/03/2024 21:09

I like the chicken liver pate. I've never been able to face even tasting black pudding

DH has it in a ready meal. I would never cook it.

needtoshrink · 24/03/2024 21:09

If it tastes like leather you are over cooking it. It should be soft and melting.

I eat it regularly- started when my dad visited and saw the liver I bought to make dog treats in the fridge. Found a recipe on bbc good food and now it's a staple here! Calves liver is my favourite, but I prefer pig to lamb, and chicken for pate. Very nutritious and delicious.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 24/03/2024 21:10

Not eaten it since I was a child.

I quite liked it though, but I was never a fussy eater.

Haven't seen liver on a menu for many years!

TerfTalking · 24/03/2024 21:10

M&S lambs liver which is sliced thinly and cheap as chips fried in bacon fat, served with the bacon, baked beans and fried potato cakes and HP sauce.

Food of the gods.

Keeprejoining · 24/03/2024 21:10

I've got a Waitrose liver and bacon with mash ready meal in the fridge, which I'm looking forward to

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/03/2024 21:10

I love a plate of liver and bacon with mash and onions and decent gravy.

merrywidow · 24/03/2024 21:12

I've never noticed the ready meals, will look and maybe try one

Awrite · 24/03/2024 21:12

I'm veggie but dh loves it. Says it's very nutritious. Liver, that is.

Bacon is just all round unhealthy, isn't it?

CuteCillian · 24/03/2024 21:12

I never eat it at home but my local gastro pub occasionally have it, and it is delicious! Only DS will partake, DH and DD's will not even try it.

BobnLen · 24/03/2024 21:12

It doesn't seem to be a thing nowadays but in the 60s and 70s we had liver about once a week with a thick gravy and mash, I think because of the iron and vitamins and it was quite cheap, especially pigs liver, we didn't have the lambs because it was dearer. it wasn't even a thing in the 90s when DS was young, I couldn't imagine his face if we had dished him up liver each week. We never think to buy it now.

merrywidow · 24/03/2024 21:14

Not sure my kids would have been pleased if I'd served it up

OP posts:
DisforDarkChocolate · 24/03/2024 21:14

Every now and then I fancy this but as it's only me who would eat it I get a ready meal from the Co-op.

BobnLen · 24/03/2024 21:14

I think I might buy a readymeal of it, I don't think I would want to deal with a raw liver.
