Does anyone eat liver and bacon anymore?

I had it growing up in the 70s. Quite liked it but the liver had an unusual texture. Not sure I'd fancy it these days

I do, but don't bother with the bacon. If I don't get it at the butchers Sainsbury's calves liver is nice. I'm 55.

Giggorata · 24/03/2024 21:34

We eat it from time time, mostly lamb's liver.
Done as described by RosesAndHellebores above, it is delicious.

I also like a black pudding, including the rarer sheep's blood one. I have them with bacon, mushrooms and a fried egg on top.
DH doesn't eat that.

We're both old.
The grown up DC also eat liver, despite being fed it as youngsters.

We have it from time to time.

I absolutely love it, sheep's liver not cow's, but it's such a time consuming grind to prepare it properly that I haven't cooked it for about a decade.

OneHeartySnail · 24/03/2024 21:36

Yes! A 1970s child. DD doesn't eat it (changling...!)

FlemishHorse · 24/03/2024 21:36

I’m surprised people can even buy calves liver in supermarkets? I’ve never seen it (and I’d snap it up if I did)

Billoddiesbeard · 24/03/2024 21:37

Oh yes, a regular favourite winter dinner in our house. I will often choose it if it's on a menu when we go out to eat as well.

I'm mid 50s.

nythbran2 · 24/03/2024 21:38

My partner made me a dish of liver and onions every time I got me period - for strength!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 24/03/2024 21:38

I like it. My mum always enjoyed it but I only came round to it as an adult. You need to cook it very lightly, so that it's just cooked and pink in the middle, and to have some friend onions in every mouthful as they cover that slightly muddy undertaste. I used to buy lamb's liver, flour it very lightly and fry it with onions, but my husband hates it and I got out of the habit of eating it after I was pregnant.

I have not either, I have just seen lamb's liver in Sains/M&S.

BlackForestCake · 24/03/2024 21:39

I think people mostly ate liver in the past because it was cheap and they were of a mindset that said you needed meat every day. Some people do like it of course.

Nowadays people are more squeamish and would rather eat a vegetarian dinner than have organ meat.

theeyeofdoe · 24/03/2024 21:41

I actually quite like liver, I really like kidneys in a steak and kidney pie - although the children hate it so much I actually now just cook my own separately.

Thisismyhappyface · 24/03/2024 21:41

I'm in my 40s. Used to have it regularly as a kid, but not eaten it for 20 something years. It's still popular in my hospital canteen though- always sells out on a Wednesday!

Lacoutine · 24/03/2024 21:41

Love liver and bacon with mash 😋
Generally only in restaurants as my DH isn’t keen - definitely calves liver. I’m Gen X.

LimoncelloSpritz · 24/03/2024 21:42

Dh made it this week. Mash and green bean. Was delicious. Mid 50s here. Love liver and kidneys if cooked properly. My local Italian does foie Venezia which is calves liver with caramelised onions which is fabulous.

GrumpyPanda · 24/03/2024 21:44

Never come across liver combined with bacon. We'll have chicken liver a couple of times a month - just quick-seared, then deglazed with marsala and a bit of cream. And occasionally calves' liver as a bit of luxury, preferably Berlin style with lots of onions and caramelized apples. Needs a really good butcher though.

MotherofPearl · 24/03/2024 21:48

I love calves' liver and often order it at a local restaurant - they always serve it seared on the outside and nice and pink on the inside. Delicious.

I'm 49. And eat anything. I deplore fussy eating and squeamishness about offal. Smile

I agree about offal. Why not? If you eat meat, you eat meat. Better to eat the whole lot. Having said that, I don't like the texture of some parts - kidneys, chickens feet - but am completely in favour of nose to tail eating!

TBOM · 24/03/2024 21:57

Absolutely a thing in good London restaurants specialising in modern British food. Usually delish.

SwordToFlamethrower · 24/03/2024 21:59

Yep! I put them in pies and have then with cabbage and mash. So much iron and just delicious

NoCloudsAllowed · 24/03/2024 22:00

Ooh, this is making me want to add liver to this week's shop!

Badly cooked, it's horrible. But it's not hard to cook. So cheap, so tasty, so nutritious.

I have no truck with people who eat meat but get squeamish about offal. It's like people who only eat chicken breast. What do you think happens to the rest of the animal?

NoCloudsAllowed · 24/03/2024 22:00

I'm early 40s btw. Don't know anyone else my age who likes it.

AfterTheWatershed · 24/03/2024 22:04

No never, my mum still cooks it for my dad occasionally. He also has tongue (cows) sometimes. It smells foul and I’ve never been tempted to try either. I’m 40s and parents are 70s.

howrudeforme · 24/03/2024 22:06

Made it for ds last week. I soak the lambs liver in milk for a few hours and then drain before using it.

I like it occasionally - with bacon and onion. Served with mash and loads of greens.

Shouldgetupearlier · 24/03/2024 22:07

No - I hated it as a child. Used to make liver cake for my dog and the smell was absolutely disgusting.
