Does anyone eat liver and bacon anymore?

I had it growing up in the 70s. Quite liked it but the liver had an unusual texture. Not sure I'd fancy it these days

Other than in pates, I first tried liver 15yrs ago when severely anaemic. A local cafe, do liver, bacon, bubble and onion gravy and since that time, have eaten there a few times a year. I haven't cooked it at home for several years though.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 24/03/2024 21:15

Yes. Delicious stuff!

Blarn · 24/03/2024 21:16

I had it in the 80s and early 90s. I remember dreading coming back from swimming on a Friday as liver, onions and a bit of bacon would be for dinner. I don't eat it now as I really disliked it. Not a squeamish thing as I eat black pudding and little chicken livers.

Yes, we do. Only very occasionally though. Lovely, especially with crispy onions as well.

Precipice · 24/03/2024 21:18

I eat chicken liver fried with onions as one of my regular meals. Tend to have it with dumplings. Never had it with bacon.

Garlicking · 24/03/2024 21:19

Yes, me! There's nothing like liver for getting your iron levels up. I'd eat it more often, but it's also so full of Vitamin A that you can overdose on it. I can cook it properly by sort of poaching it - adding liquid after browning the outside - and keeping the temperature down. I've only ever had really good fried liver in Italian restaurants. I've asked how they do it, but they make it sound like they don't do anything special. Liars 😆

Yes, love it. I prefer lambs calves liver, to any other. I had to place an order with my local butcher, because they were not selling enough of it, to have it in stock all the time. Lovely, but pricey. I normally have it with fried onions, and homemade chips.

merrywidow · 24/03/2024 21:20

I should have asked how old you all are

I occasionally do liver and onions, madh and veg. I seem to get a craving once in a blue moon. I'm not sure if it's dietary or nostalgia, though. I'm predominantly veggie and usually feel guilty when I do it..odd

AuntieMarys · 24/03/2024 21:22

I cook calves liver and bacon with sage and red wine

I love ragout of liver. It's with onions, bacon, grated apple and sultanas. Eaten with rice.

DisforDarkChocolate · 24/03/2024 21:23

I'm in my 50s.

My butcher recommended adding crumbled up black pudding to slow cooked beef to up my iron levels instead or liver.

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/03/2024 21:23

I'm older than the previous poster

LadyKenya · 24/03/2024 21:26

I have tried the vacuum packed lambs liver from Sainsburys, and M&S. It is okay, but not as nice as from the butchers. I fancy some now, so will call them this week. I am younger than the PP.

BobnLen · 24/03/2024 21:26

I was born late 50s so ate lots of liver, also tripe, which DM loved and was absolutely vile

FlemishHorse · 24/03/2024 21:28

Liver needs very light cooking, too hot or too long and it turns into hard gritty lumps. It’s usually overcooked in ready meals. I cook lamb’s liver (with onions, bacon and mashed potatoes) often. Yum.

merrywidow · 24/03/2024 21:12

I've never noticed the ready meals, will look and maybe try one

I wouldn't they are terrible definitely better making your own.i seal ox liver in a pan then cook in the oven.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/03/2024 21:29

We do when the grown up children are away. They won't touch it.

Lambs liver
Soften a finely sliced onion until it's unctuous and melty, in a little olive oil season with salt and pepper. Add 4 halved smoked streaky rashers and sizzle, add finely sliced strips of lamb's liver (about 2/3 minutes) and a heaped dsp of flour, add rich beef stock, and a dsp of red wine vinegar. Serve with garlic mash and a dark green veg.

Calves liver
Serve with potatoes dauphinoise and spinach.

One finely sliced pink shallot softened in a little oil, sizzle some butter in a separate pan, add finely sliced calves liver, fresh sage, salt and pepper - takes about 2/3 minutes, stir through the shallot and serve immediately.

Spinach tip: bag of baby leaves in a covered casserole, with 1 dsp of water added and blast in the microwave for 3 minutes. Perfect.

Calves liver is one if my favourite dinners.

Slabs of grwy, hard pigs liver at school put many people off. Properly cooked lambs or Calves liver is nothing like it.

AdoraBell · 24/03/2024 21:31

Big no from me. I was forced to eat it as a child. I hate it. DH would eat it daily.

When my mum was pregnant with me she was anaemic, and given raw liver (which was absolutely revolting apparently) to increase her iron levels. I love liver, but I'm not sure I could eat it raw!

Rainbow1901 · 24/03/2024 21:31

DH would have it - but I don't like it and as I do 99% of the cooking - if I don't like something it doesn't get cooked. That includes anything with chocolate cos I don't like that either!!

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2024 21:31

Sure, ordered it not too long ago at a restaurant.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/03/2024 21:32

I do it for me and DH sometimes. I use the Hairy Bikers Liver and Bacon recipe. We have it with mashed potato and dark green cabbage. It’s a proper Winter tea.

I’m 53, he’s 59.

LadyKenya · 24/03/2024 21:32

I used to be so pleased, when I walked into the dining hall at lunchtime, and saw that it was liver. It was served with bacon, and greens, which I found so bitter as a child, and would not eat them. I missed quite a few playtimes😁🥬
