Does anyone eat liver and bacon anymore?

I had it growing up in the 70s. Quite liked it but the liver had an unusual texture. Not sure I'd fancy it these days

Never had liver growing up as my Mum isn't keen on offal at all. (She's 91.) Possible exception is in the form of pate or a jar of paste, I suppose. She makes a steak and kidney pie/casserole but makes sure she doesn't get any of the kidney. In the good old days you could get pork chops with a bit of kidney attached. Lovely.

I probably first had liver as an adult and I do enjoy it, but nobody else at home does, so it's rarely worth buying, but I sometimes get to eat it in a restaurant.

I used to make a glorious ragu bolognese from Delia Smith's original recipe, which included chicken livers. Made all the difference to the flavour. Sadly, nobody else at home eats beef now so it's not worth bothering to make it just for me. Maybe for a party some time ...

I am surprised to see a few posters saying that as they are the only one in the household eating liver, that it is not really worth cooking it.

Bouledeneige · 25/03/2024 09:49

I love liver but I'm afraid I prefer Calves liver as it has a much finer texture than the stuff I was fed as a kid. Plus no tubes in it!

It's not easy to get hold of (M&S sometimes has it) but mostly I'd have it in a restaurant. It's served in a variety of ways - with bacon/caramelised onions or Marsala sauce. Love it!

We had it last night.
My family’s favourite is when cut into small strips, quickly fried with a chopped onion then add a tin of tomatoes, garlic, mixed herbs, sliced peppers & mushrooms. Add tomato purée to thicken near the end.

I had liver and bacon at a fancy restaurant yesterday - it was delicious.

Bassetlover · 25/03/2024 10:58

I had it regularly as a kid in the 1970's. Lovely stuff! I never cook it now though. I'm not fussy though, my mum would regularly cook faggots, black pudding and lamb's hearts stuffed with sage and onion stuffing which were bloody lovely!

We have it every couple of months as a Sunday roast. Lambs liver, soaked in milk for a couple of hours, dusted in flour and fried. Tons of onions and lovely thick gravy, served with roasties, cabbage, carrots and broccoli. DH and I are 50s, neighbour who I cook for is 80s. Also bloody love a leftover liver sandwich the next day - white bread, tons of butter and warmed up liver and gravy.

DD won't touch it (18) but DSD (28) always loved it, and I assume she still does.

Local gastro pub has liver and mash on its menu, but it's bloody £20

I also use pigs liver in homemade faggots, but that has to be minced up so you can't really tell it's there. DD used to eat them (and as a child would ask for seconds) but won't now.

Can I come round to yours for dinner, please?!!!

minipie · 25/03/2024 11:06

I absolutely love calves liver but rarely have it as it’s hard to find. Butcher says there’s no demand for it. Supermarket doesn’t have it, maybe very very occasionally. It’s quite often on the menu at Italian restaurants though 😋

I wouldn’t have it with bacon if I do find it! No need.

I thought my dog deserved a treat and bought some liver for him, just a couple of pieces. He wolfed them down raw. The following day, the tender pink skin on his under side had turned black. It stayed black for a year or more but has now faded back to pink. Vet shrugged shoulders and said dunno, see what happens, he's not ill. Still don't know why but I shan't do it again. And put me right off eating it myself. Offal free home now 😀

Trophyfoot · 25/03/2024 11:43

Anyone who thinks liver is hard, dry or leathery is cooking it wrong. It must not be over cooked, but is completely delicious when done properly. I prefer it without the liver and with mash. Absolute bargain dinner too.

I'm one of them. If I could get it from a supermarket, the pack would be too big just for me. I could freeze the rest, of course, but then there's the issue of the non-liver-eaters finding the sight and smell of my liver unpleasant, and frankly it's just not worth the bother.

CanapeJane · 25/03/2024 14:45

I know someone elderly who makes it almost every week. I loved it as a child and hers looks and smells amazing but I don’t think I could eat liver now.

AhBiscuits · 25/03/2024 14:55

I enjoyed it as a child in the 80s. I think if I served it to mine they'd call social services.

Sausage1989 · 25/03/2024 15:03

Liver is the most nutrient dense thing you can eat. I WISH I could eat it but I just hate it I've tried so hard!!

Why??? Social services??

AhBiscuits · 25/03/2024 17:03

Because they would declare it gross and that I was trying to poison them.

treacledan71 · 25/03/2024 17:07

I sometimes make it for DH. If I do I freeze a few portions. Hate it myself. It used to be about 70p but now 2.00.

WhatTheFuckIsThat · 25/03/2024 17:09

I'd rather eat dry bread than offal - I'm not a vegetarian but like actual meat

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/03/2024 17:29

I think bears do, but then they'll eat grubs and all sorts of things that personally I wouldn't.

garlicandsapphires · 24/03/2024 21:02

Yes from time to time.
I like offal cos it’s cheap and nutritious. But don’t see it in the shops very often.

Morrisons always have it in. If you have one near by.

OhmygodDont · 25/03/2024 17:46

Though to answer the question never. It wasn’t something I was fed as a child and it’s not something that makes me go ooooo I want to try that 😅

Oakbeam · 25/03/2024 17:49

It was my favourite meal at school. I’m the only one who will eat it in this house so I batch cook it and eat when I’m in on my own.

beetlebrain · 25/03/2024 17:54

Adore it, and love the silky feel of raw liver too. Seasoned flour and just show it the hot frying pan- lovely and tender. Calves most luxurious but dearer than fillet steak. Lambs tasty and cheap. BTW I'm 60.

stargirl1701 · 25/03/2024 18:01

I ate it in school dinners and at home in the '80s. I did like it but I've never cooked it.
