I've lost track of the 5 'families' - New Cons are the Cates/Kruger family? Mainly 2019 intake. Does this all link to Paul (Tory donor/GB News) Marshall?

I agree that voters in the UK prefer their politicians to wear their faith lightly. I don't see that changing.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/04/2024 12:06

Even among Christian’s that sort of American Christian right doesn’t exist here in huge numbers. Or even particularly small numbers. As a general rule U.K. Christianity is far more liberal than US Christianity.

AdamRyan · 04/04/2024 12:24

There seems to be a lot of money funding these weird religious American groups. I have fallen down a Q Anon/CPAC/Trump rabbit hole this morning. I'm not sure whats going on and it's hurting my head but there is certainly money being spent pushing the messages. It's all a bit "second coming" to be honest and I was wondering if it's the 21st century version of missionaries.

Sorry, rambling.

AdamRyan · 04/04/2024 12:26

CPAC funded the Truss/Bannockburn conference. They also fund nationalist stuff in Aus and they love Trump.

Q Anon are all over the deep state/uprising coming stuff. Also love Trump.

US dollars going to think tanks like policy exchange for who knows what reason.

Plus GB News/Nat Cons.

Scary times.

Latest YouGov MRP poll

https://x.com/YouGov/status/1775531272594395421?s=20

New YouGov MRP – Labour set to win more than 400 seats

Labour: 403 (+201 since GE2019)
Conservatives: 155 (-210)
Lib Dems: 49 (+38)
SNP: 19 (-29)
Plaid: 4 (=)
Greens: 1 (=)
Reform UK: 0 (=)

Won't be the reality though. If people think it's a foregone conclusion, some will not bother to vote.

Wish 155 seats or fewer was, let's just hope for a few of the nastier Tories losing their seat.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/04/2024 12:46

@AdamRyan with my relative being caught up in this rubbish, I've spent more time than I would like tracking back sources, money and peoples histories to debunk shit. Be very careful to step away at times for your sanity.

It's not about how liberal it is! It would be and is deliberately unliberal. The point would be to have very moralistic controlling policies with "Christian" endorsement. It won't have anything to do with your standard C of E style Christianity. The Church of England and the Tory Party had a divorce in the 1980s over Thatcherism. The point would be to be very moralistic

But that’s the point isn’t it. It’s not going to get them anywhere over here.

In the same way that every time they look at the polls and take a giant step towards the reform vote they lose a load of voters off the other end who are horrified at what they’ve become.

Apparently the new Conservatives are going for the religion angle aka Christianity like the American right. This was in the FT. I think it suits some like Badenoch or indeed Gove (but don't reckon he will survive the election).

I think it's a loser ticket to go religious. I want less religious cant in politics

So presumably the new Conservatives have been voting against for instance deporting people to Rwanda and criminalising homelessness?
Or does their particular intepretation of an ancient book not hold with helping those much less fortunate than themselves?

IClaudine · 04/04/2024 14:21

I think Badenoch would very much go the Christian angle. I have said a few times that despite what the FWR lot think, she is no real friend to women as I think she is anti-abortion.

bombastix · 04/04/2024 14:29

@RafaistheKingofClay I agree. I think they will get more finger wagging in an explicit way after the next election.

It will go down like a cup of cold sick with the electorate

Edited

I'm confused @DuncinToffee .

I've never properly understood Twitter trends

tobee · 04/04/2024 14:41

Or rather "what's happening"

tobee · 04/04/2024 14:42

Basically what does that mean?

My Former MP, Scott Mann has been heavily promoting Easter, even with the message "He has Risen!"
As has my current one, Sheryl Murray... the road to Damascus must be very busy with Tory MPs being struck blind.

Neither have ever mentioned Christianity before.

It's an overview of the most used hashtags at that moment.

Not very reliable but it was striking at that moment, shame I posted the slightly later screenshot.

I get what you are saying, but I reckon most people like to vote for a winner, so with the election being a foregone conclusion, it may encourage some to vote.
And it is easy enough to argue one is voting against the Tories because of parties or whichever scandal most appauls you.

bombastix · 04/04/2024 16:02

The batshittery continues as the Conservatives decide what sort of party they want to be as they investigate Alan Duncan for his remarks that many of the Cabinet are extreme on Israel. He asked for Braverman to be investigated!

Literally the whole of the Conservative Party is splitting before our eyes. One part is pro leaving the ECHR and defying international law perhaps with immigration policy and supports the Israeli government who have been accused of breaching international law too, with a Foreign Secretary that is supposed to hold Israel to account for its actions in Gaza.

They are over. Sunak has no power at all.

Notonthestairs · 04/04/2024 16:36

"Sunak has no power at all."

See also - Andrea Jenkyns & Truss at Farage's birthday party. Jenkyns fast middle finger tweeting Farage is conservative to his core.

Given Farage owns a rival party that was either a hint she's off or deliberate provocation of her own party.

Eating themselves.

Sunak has power over two important things.

  1. Screwing the rest of us over
  2. When the general election is.

That is far too much power.

DuncinToffee · 04/04/2024 16:43

Braverman just visited Israel, don't know on whose behalf or in what capacity

Cameron didn't want to be asked any questions about Gaza and Israel in his BBC interview

Part of her leadership campaign?

That stunted egotistical little man has power purely as it is he that holds us to ransom when calling the election will be called plus making sure he secures even more wealth & another job once he is out on his arse.

That's all right though. He's only Foreign Secretary and the conflict is not really one of the most important issues of the last century.
