2 weeks to go to my big solo adventure and starting to lose my nerve!

My brother died very suddenly in his early 40’s 12 years ago. Before he died he had done a number of long solo walking holidays including the Camino from St Jean Pied de Pont to Santiago, so 500 miles.
Ever since it has been my dream to do the same route.
Now I’m 58. My youngest child is in University. I am a partner in work and have very supportive colleagues who will work up while I’m away so on a whim a few weeks ago I decided to go for it. I have booked a single ticket to fly to Biarritz after Easter and have told work I will be gone for 8 weeks. Im going by myself and planning to carry a backpack and wing it because I don’t want to commit to a particular distance each day. I have various friends and family who are coming to join me wherever I am at different times so it should be fantastic and I am very excited.
I’m also getting a bit terrified though. Mainly about the walking. I’m reasonably fit and have done a few 16-18 km hill walks in the past few weeks to prepare but I’m overweight and have menopausal aches and pains and scared I will not be able for it. I have allowed myself an extra 2 weeks to the usual but that still means an average of 15km daily for 8 weeks. I’m telling myself that I will get fitter as I walk.
Am I mad? Reassurance needed 🤯

I'm so envious of this!

Have lots of fun @Twodogsonthecouch and safe travels!

RagzRebooted · 03/04/2024 12:15

How exciting! My Mum wanted to do this, but never did as she unfortunately died aged 56. I'd love to do it in her honour one day. Probably when DCs are a bit older. I don't know much about it at all, so will be following your journey.

Peridot1 · 03/04/2024 12:48

Best of luck!

How lovely that your DH and DD will be with you to start you off.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 03/04/2024 14:53

Good luck!

The only advice I have is: don't underestimate the pyrenees! Altitude, accent and decent will slow you down.
But the landscape will be worth it!! Enjoy.

ConstitutionHill · 03/04/2024 14:58

Wow. You'll be fine. Just make sure you have really strong, comfy and worn in selection of shoes. I would have a walking boot, an open sport sandal and a trainer type walking shoe. Also a good foot care kit.

If you have a few quid for rooms and hostels you'll be absolutely fine. It will be a trip of a lifetime and one I hope to do soon.

CheeseLizard21Blue · 03/04/2024 16:04

Wow, Bon Camino!

CettePersonne · 03/04/2024 16:13

Wow op, this is amazing 😄 I can only aspire to your "I'm just gonna fucking do it" attitude! This is what life is about right, finding out what you want and doing it. I look forward to any updates!

What would your brother think of you doing this? Would he be surprised, or not, take the piss, full of advice, laid back, competitive, proud? I hope you enjoy the little extra connection with him your adventures will bring ❤️

flyright · 04/04/2024 15:47

Bon Camino!

Back ache got me more than blisters but I think some kind of discomfort is inevitable. But the emotional benefits outweigh them by far. At the time but also later.

It's a great thing you're doing. It won't always feel like it. Trudge, trudge, trudge.

splashofcolour · 04/04/2024 15:49

I'd recommend trainers a size bigger than you are for swelling. 😊

Dahlia444 · 04/04/2024 16:14

Have a wonderful time. It's something I'd like to do one day.

TheBossOfMe · 04/04/2024 16:33

OMG I'm so jealous! What an amazing adventure - and what a lovely way to honour your brother.

Twodogsonthecouch · 05/04/2024 15:40

So everyone says the first stage is the hardest as it is hiking over the Pyrenees. Also a lot of people advise splitting it especially if you are planning to walk all the way as you need to let the strength build up in your legs. I took this advice and stopped in Orisson. I’m really glad I did as if I went past here the next habitation is 17 km and very hilly. I still feel good and as though I have more miles in my legs which is good. The scenery is stunning. St Jean Pied de Port is a lovely town. All good so far
