2 weeks to go to my big solo adventure and starting to lose my nerve!

My brother died very suddenly in his early 40’s 12 years ago. Before he died he had done a number of long solo walking holidays including the Camino from St Jean Pied de Pont to Santiago, so 500 miles.
Ever since it has been my dream to do the same route.
Now I’m 58. My youngest child is in University. I am a partner in work and have very supportive colleagues who will work up while I’m away so on a whim a few weeks ago I decided to go for it. I have booked a single ticket to fly to Biarritz after Easter and have told work I will be gone for 8 weeks. Im going by myself and planning to carry a backpack and wing it because I don’t want to commit to a particular distance each day. I have various friends and family who are coming to join me wherever I am at different times so it should be fantastic and I am very excited.
I’m also getting a bit terrified though. Mainly about the walking. I’m reasonably fit and have done a few 16-18 km hill walks in the past few weeks to prepare but I’m overweight and have menopausal aches and pains and scared I will not be able for it. I have allowed myself an extra 2 weeks to the usual but that still means an average of 15km daily for 8 weeks. I’m telling myself that I will get fitter as I walk.
Am I mad? Reassurance needed 🤯

Sounds amazing. On a practical note even if you go slow, that long on your feet each day will ache and hurt, so be prepared for that - make sure you have lots of decent double layer running socks - Hilly are the best IMO, lots of micropore tape (great for blisters and sore bits), wear Uniqlo Airism base layers as they are great for comfort and wicking sweat and vaseline the fuck out of anything that might rub or chafe.

Just seen your thread Op - I'm so jealous! Have an amazing time!

I've never done it myself but would love to one day so I'm definitely here for the updates!

Good luck!

Sybila · 24/03/2024 19:58

I’m so jealous but can’t wait to read your posts. You’ll have the best time I’m sure, the Camino just sounds transformational

Just saw there was a Woaca women of a certain age Facebook group for walking the camino

Twodogsonthecouch · 30/03/2024 19:33

@campingwithdoggo just joined that group. It’s great.
Bought a new backpack as my old one is too big and too heavy. Flying out on Thursday and starting to walk on Friday. Still have a list of jobs but nearly there.
I can’t remember when I was this nervous 😬

I thought of you when I caught the end of Pilgrimage on BBC 2 last night. Serious Camino envy here.

Sounds amazing. You go girl!

Thanks so much everyone. This is exactly what I need. I’m going 2 weeks today and will start walking the following day. I’m really hoping the route over the Pyrenees via Orisson will be open because it looks spectacular. I’m considering stopping there for the first night even though it’s only 8km in as it’s apparently very steep and it’s the only stop so if I go past it I have to continue to Roncesvalles which is 25km and very steep. I don’t want to get overwhelmed at the very beginning.
My father, sister, daughter and son have all
done the last stage from Sarria at different times since my brother died in memory of him so I really feel it would be special to complete it. I still have the postcards he sent from along the way.
I would love to keep this thread going for the next 10 weeks or so for support before it and updates on the way.
Thanks again ❤️

I will be following you! So envious. Desperate to do the Camino myself too. You'll have an amazing time and won't want to come home!

Pillownights · 30/03/2024 20:56

Ooh Please keep this thread active, Camino is on my bucket list. Or start a new one

Agree for big physical tasks to remember to rest when needed. If your knees or calves start to go or you get blisters, book a cheap hotel, rest for a day then back on it.

Spain has all the usual shops so you can buy new stuff, don't overload yourself.

I was in Mogro in February - beautiful place. I didn't get a chance to do much exploring but there's a nice little cafe at the train station (which I didn't make as I was running for a train) and a Lupo supermarket. I'll post a photo if I find one.

Also met someone who met her boyfriend on the Camino oddly enough
:-D

Last day at work today. Heading off tomorrow morning. Bag is packed. 6.5 kg for 8 weeks 😮. Have a hotel booked in St Jean Pied de Port tomorrow night and start walking on Friday. The Napoleon pass over the Pyrenees is opening today weather permitting so really hoping to do that route.

Oh wow, what an amazing adventure this sounds. I’ve been fascinated by the Camino ever since reading Therapy by David Lodge as a teenager, even though I’m not a religious person. I hope it’s a wonderful experience for you, and that it brings you closer to your brother’s memory.

TokyoSushi · 03/04/2024 10:59

Oh yay! Looks like I've found this thread at just the right time! Good luck OP!

nowtygaffer · 03/04/2024 11:09

Good luck! What an adventure you will have! ❤️

awesomeaardvark · 03/04/2024 11:10

Good luck for your journey tomorrow! I would LOVE to do what you are doing (same age, same fitness and same overweightness!). I have been looking at doing the Camino for the last 5 or 6 years, but it hasn't happened yet. You are going to meet so many people, you won't have time to worry. Good luck!

Twodogsonthecouch · 03/04/2024 11:44

My husband and daughter will be with me for the first 5 days. I’m delighted that they will be with me while I get into the groove and also for the hardest stage over the Pyrenees. I keep telling myself it’s not a race or a competition.. the only person I am doing this for is myself. More excited than nervous now. Cannot believe I am actually doing it.
Definitely for me the best way was to decide very quickly and just do it. If I took months to get organised I would have backed out.
