2 weeks to go to my big solo adventure and starting to lose my nerve!

My brother died very suddenly in his early 40’s 12 years ago. Before he died he had done a number of long solo walking holidays including the Camino from St Jean Pied de Pont to Santiago, so 500 miles.
Ever since it has been my dream to do the same route.
Now I’m 58. My youngest child is in University. I am a partner in work and have very supportive colleagues who will work up while I’m away so on a whim a few weeks ago I decided to go for it. I have booked a single ticket to fly to Biarritz after Easter and have told work I will be gone for 8 weeks. Im going by myself and planning to carry a backpack and wing it because I don’t want to commit to a particular distance each day. I have various friends and family who are coming to join me wherever I am at different times so it should be fantastic and I am very excited.
I’m also getting a bit terrified though. Mainly about the walking. I’m reasonably fit and have done a few 16-18 km hill walks in the past few weeks to prepare but I’m overweight and have menopausal aches and pains and scared I will not be able for it. I have allowed myself an extra 2 weeks to the usual but that still means an average of 15km daily for 8 weeks. I’m telling myself that I will get fitter as I walk.
Am I mad? Reassurance needed 🤯

Fantastic start! I'm so glad you're keeping this updated. I don't think I've ever been so excited for something a total stranger is doing. There is something special about the camino

Pinkpinkpink15 · 05/04/2024 19:35

Best wishes

im looking forward to your updates!!

Twodogsonthecouch · 06/04/2024 15:33

Today was tough. 20km over the Pyrenees. Spectacular scenery but long uphill and steep descent
It’s done though and I don’t think there’s anything quite as tough again

Wow, OP! Well done on an amazing achievement!

Well done for getting over the mountain. Do you plan to stay in Roncesvalles or go further now? What's your weather like, we are in the middle of Storm Kathleen which has hopefully bypassed you. Are there many other pilgrims around now that Easter is over?

Twodogsonthecouch · 06/04/2024 16:29

Definitely not moving past Roncesvalles today… can barely walk 😂😂
I’m assuming I will be fine tomorrow and hitting the road again. I anticipated be wiped out today though so have booked a b and b only 14 km away

Weather is warm and sunny but extremely windy. Often quite difficult to hold your feet
Seems quite busy but I have nothing to compare it to

Good on you. The first few days are hell on earth for the paws (and every other muscle you own), but you will soon get into your stride now that the terrain is not as punishing as the Pyrenees.

If you get a hot spot on your feet deal with it immediately on the side of the path if necessary. Blisters are the pilgrimage demons.

Buen Camino.

TheBossOfMe · 07/04/2024 10:50

Well done, you! So inspiring!

IAmABogWitch · 07/04/2024 15:53

Hope you slept well in the B&B. The scenery is stunning.

Twodogsonthecouch · 09/04/2024 09:41

Did a long day yesterday, 24.5km, to make up for the short first day. It was tough. I am still tired this morning but want to stay on track with at least 15km so I don’t get under pressure for time. Scenery is beautiful. Everyone is friendly.

todayortommorow "No useful advice but this is awesome! I did my first solo travel (much less impressive) earlier this year. I got a bit nervous before I went and then loved it and was proud of myself. Let us know how it goes - it's on my list for when my kids are older"

Same here, I got a new/renewed passport last year after 25+ years, and at a couple of weeks shy of 57, travelled to Spain on my own.
I did all my own booking of flights, seats, navigating the airports checking in, customs etc
I was a little nervous but I did it, I was pleased with myself Grin

Have a great time op

Twodogsonthecouch · 11/04/2024 14:26

So the real solo bit started today. My husband and daughter have left and I’m plodding on 😂. I’d be lying if I said it is easy. I think I badly needed more miles in my legs but… I’m over 100km in, I’ve adjusted to bunk bed living, handwashing clothes, mixed sex dormitories and communal dining.

Following with much interest. I think I’d find the long-distance walking easier than the communal sleeping! You are clearly admirably adaptable! Best wishes for the next step.

MBL · 11/04/2024 14:37

Also following your adventure!
It looks amazing!

mitogoshi · 11/04/2024 14:46

Best wishes op. I'm hoping to do this myself in 3-4 years when I quit working, following with interest. I've driven the Camino Frances I think it's called and walked sections, it's a beautiful route and such lovely people you meet

UmaniCaroline · 11/04/2024 14:52

I've just found this thread - fantastic, well done @Twodogsonthecouch so inspiring and reading the enthusiasm and encouragement from other posters has made me feel quite emotional.
I know nothing about the route you're doing (will obviously look it up now) but I am looking forward to following your progress and seeing your photos.

Well done Op - you've got this!

LunaNorth · 11/04/2024 20:05

OP, you’re inspiring me.

KronkeyCroc · 11/04/2024 20:11

Amazing. You are very inspiring OP! I hope
I'm brave enough to do something similar when my kids are grown. Look forward to seeing your progress. You can do it!
