Did you have many takeaways growing up?

I was born 81 and one of five and I think we were pretty poor. I remember having fish and chips occasionally and sometimes if parents went to the pub they would bring home chow mein and chips from the local Chinese.

I think it was my older siblings who introduced McDonald's and pizza when I was about 10 (I wasn't a fan haha). Thee seem to be multitudes more takeaway options now.

Yes, we didn't live in the UK though, so I think there may be cultural differences, but as a young child (primary school age), I remember us having a takeaway every Friday or Saturday (it was a weekend evening, maybe not the same every week). Things like pizza or hot sandwiches (like a panini sort of thing) or chinese.

But beyond that, we used to eat out a lot. I'd say 4 nights a week, every week. In retrospect, I have no idea how the hell my parents afforded it. We were comfortably middle class, not skint, but dh and I are comfortably middle class now and 2 meals out/takeaway per month is about our limit. It must have certainly still cost £50 or so per meal (2 adults and a child) factoring in any starters, desserts, drinks. It seems like such a ridiculous thing to be spending money on! My mum was desperately unable to cook though, so I think she felt she needed to overcompensate maybe for just not being able to produce nice meals for us at home. She also has food issues, so maybe that's why, I don't know. But as a grown up now, I think it seems ridiculous.

I was born in 77. We hardly ever had takeaway. I can remember the first one we had- a Chinese when I was about 11. I think it was my parents’ wedding anniversary or something so it was a special occasion! The novelty of having a cooked meal delivered to your door was quite the thing. By the time I was in my late teens, getting a takeaway was more common and we definitely had a few takeaway pizzas at University.

@MadisonAvenue I know! What's happened to Chinese takeaway chips?! They used to be the absolute best!
@Alonglongway That sounds lovely to me!

Born in 1977 bought up by single mother on what was then a fairly nice council estate, we never had anything aside from very occasionally chips from the chip van and a sausage. Could not afford fish.

I genuinely did not know McDonald's existed until I was 17.

Mum used to get a Chinese takeaway with her friend after they'd been to keep-fit on a Tuesday!
