Did you have many takeaways growing up?

I was born 81 and one of five and I think we were pretty poor. I remember having fish and chips occasionally and sometimes if parents went to the pub they would bring home chow mein and chips from the local Chinese.

I think it was my older siblings who introduced McDonald's and pizza when I was about 10 (I wasn't a fan haha). Thee seem to be multitudes more takeaway options now.

We had an Indian meal every Saturday night and occasional Fish and Chips.
we used to eat out about once a month restaurant evening meal or a pub lunch, but much less than we do these days, and of course you had to order over the phone and then drive to collect the takeaway.

RampantIvy · 19/03/2024 19:27

No, never. My parents didn't own a car, and back then the only takeaway was fish and chips. By the time we would have walked the mile back home from the chip shop the meal would have been cold - 1960s.

BarrelOfOtters · 19/03/2024 19:30

Born late 60s. Fish and chips every couple of months. we did eat out though, wimpy and We’d eat at a berni Inn for birthdays.

remember going out for Chinese with a friends family…and thinking it was fantastic.

still rarely have takeaways.

TorroFerney · 19/03/2024 19:34

Born 1972. Fish and chips occasionally and sometimes KFC - someone's birthday. Never Indian or Chinese, parents didn't eat foreign food. I had my first Chinese meal aged 18 in Manchester with some work clients, they were amazed I'd never eaten Chinese food before.

I’m in my 40’s, can’t remember many takeaways as a kid. If we were on holiday in the U.K., we’d have fish and chips and I remember us having a McDonald’s less than once per year in the 90’s and then it was on the way back from holidays, it was such a treat

Berlinlover · 19/03/2024 19:37

I never had a takeaway until my mother died when I was 10.

Pixiesgirl · 19/03/2024 19:40

I was pretty suspicious of new foods as a kid, most things were traditional and cooked from scratch. I love different foods now but tbh have still only had about 3 Indian takeaways because I never know what to order.

Born in the 60s and when I was little, a chippy was a treat. Local chippy had a little cafe in the back so eating there was an extra treat! When I was about 10, a couple of my dad's mates took over the chippy so chippy tea became a bit more regular as he got mates rates and a few freebies thrown in.

Rarely had Chinese as it was more expensive.

tracktrail · 19/03/2024 19:47

Born mid 60s, we had a chippy dinner maybe once or twice a year and something on holiday. (self catering at Butlins type holidays)

Kwasi · 19/03/2024 19:50

Born in 77. Every now and then, we would get chippy chips, but only cos my mum’s mate worked their and she’d do us a small cone of them (this was back in the newspaper days).

My parents didn’t go out very often but about once every year or two, they went to a club next to a Chinese and would bring back gravy and chips.

fretaway · 19/03/2024 19:53

Grew up in the 80s.
Not really because I lived in a takeaway lol. But we did go to McDonalds and Burger King once in a while when we went on a shopping trip, but more frequently later on.
I cannot recall getting any other type of takeaway apart from a couple of times Mum got minced beef pudding and chips from the chippy to check out the competition 😂.

BurbageBrook · 19/03/2024 20:04

Born 90s, fairly well off family. (Better off than I am now as a millennial!) We had takeaways weekly.

Aworldofmyown · 19/03/2024 20:07

Nope, I had Chinese on my 13th birthday 🙂
I thought pot noodles were a treat.
Born in '78

NotFastButFurious · 19/03/2024 20:07

Late 70’s born and apart from occasionally fish & chips (usually if we’d been out all day or on holiday) we never had takeaway. My parents still don’t and I’ve never had anything other than fish & chips delivered to home. Whenever I have Chinese or Indian takeaway it’s at someone else’s house.

Aworldofmyown · 19/03/2024 20:08

I went to a couple of McDonald's birthday parties back when those were a thing.

CirreltheSquirrel · 19/03/2024 20:08

Born 1978 and I can't remember having takeaways other than fish and chips at the seaside until I was late teens.

We went to the USA a couple of times and would have McDonald's and subway there, but never went to the McDonald's in my local town unless I was invited to a party there.

LindorDoubleChoc · 19/03/2024 20:11

I was born in the early 60s and we had fish and chips maybe 4 times a year? I remember it being an enormous treat.

There were no Indian or Chinese takeaways in my city until perhaps the early 1980s.

I had my first Macdonalds in 1983 or so in London, when I was at University.

Queijo · 19/03/2024 20:11

Grew up in the 90s, never ever had takeout apart from fish and chips with grandma by the sea.

Now with dd we live in a city and I had to properly give myself a talking to due to the amount of sushi we were ordering a week.

I find it so interesting the way I grew up and how Dd is growing up with me now.

AgnesX · 19/03/2024 20:11

Rarely as we lived in a village until I was in my teens. After moving to a town we discovered Indian food but the treat was to eat out.

Now I have my own home Indian takeaway is still the choice (tried everything else!).

sunnylanding · 19/03/2024 20:15

Only chips from the chip van that parked on the estate on Friday nights. Eaten whilst watching "The fall guy".

Titsywoo · 19/03/2024 20:26

We were well off but didn't have many takeaways. The odd chinese or fish and chips. We did eat out a fair bit though.

Titsywoo · 19/03/2024 20:27

Sorry - I was born in late 70s

bilgewater · 19/03/2024 20:31

Maybe fish and chips at the seaside once a year. Not really a thing when I was growing up (rural, 1970s). I first tasted Chinese food at university!

Shogunspretzel · 19/03/2024 20:31

Yeah a reasonable amount maybe every few weeks my parents got one or we had burger king when out shopping. I was born in 85.

There were just two kids though. Did you have four siblings op? That's quite a lot if kids and I can see how it would increase the cost a lot.

TeenLifeMum · 19/03/2024 20:35

We had it twice a year ish - df liked Indian, dm liked Chinese, I liked either so could choose and db liked fish and chips. Df would go to a road with all three options, order Indian, then Chinese, then get fish and chips before collecting Chinese and Indian. It was quite a task 😂

I didn’t have McDonald’s until I was 14 and in town with friends. We did occasionally go to Pizza Hut but not for a takeaway. Beefeater was the more regular eating out option (twice a year and once for Pizza Hut).

on reflection, we probably eat takeaway a similar amount. I was born 1982.
