Did you have many takeaways growing up?

I was born 81 and one of five and I think we were pretty poor. I remember having fish and chips occasionally and sometimes if parents went to the pub they would bring home chow mein and chips from the local Chinese.

I think it was my older siblings who introduced McDonald's and pizza when I was about 10 (I wasn't a fan haha). Thee seem to be multitudes more takeaway options now.

Born in the 70’s and got takeaways maybe once a week and went to restaurants quite a lot. The one I remember mostly was the Berni Inn. Loved it!

Mairzydotes · 19/03/2024 20:38

Yes, we regularly had fish and chips from the local chip shop. This was in the 80s and 90s. Occasionally we had a Chinese.

In the 80s, we'd go to Greggs with my grandma so she could buy a stottie, and we'd often get sausage rolls and cream cakes too.

I remember having McDonald’s and Wimpy but that was a sit in.

HBGKC · 19/03/2024 20:39

Literally never.

Born 1980, eldest of a large family. My parents had no spare cash at all ever - my mum remembers not being able to afford to buy a comb (from Boots - no pound shops back then). No McDonalds or fast food ever either.

We survived! You don't miss what you've never had. We ate decent (not very varied) home-cooked meals every night, butterscotch Angel Delight for a treat dessert every now and then, a Vienetta and a bottle of 'fizzy' on Sundays. Good times!

(My parents moved to England as adults, so cultural norms/expectations may have been a bit different also).

WellThisIsFun1 · 19/03/2024 20:40

Had fish and chips quite often as we lived opposite an amazing chippy.

Very occasionally went to Wimpy with my dad, McDonalds didn't come to our town until 1988!

Never ate Indian or Chinese food until I was late teens, mum never trusted the restaurants due to ridiculous stories about what they put in their food!

jaydess · 19/03/2024 20:41

Born in the sixties. Chinese on a Sunday evening, but it wasn't very Chinese - spring rolls, chips and curry with prawn balls

eacapade1982 · 19/03/2024 20:41

My grandad used to buy us fish and chips every Friday for the 5 years or so he lived with us. I don’t remember getting Chinese. I think we got the odd Indian but probably about once a year. I still get takeaways at about that rate now, about once or twice a year.

Runnerinthenight · 19/03/2024 20:44

Born in the 60s and got fish and chips maybe 3/4 times a year. There was one cafe that we occasionally had a sit-in meal but it was basically a chippy too. No other takeaways available.

My young adults scandalise me with the number of takeaways they order!

How I wish the chips were as good as they used to be!!

sammylady37 · 19/03/2024 20:46

Literally none. My parents considered them unhealthy and a waste of money. We had home-cooked meals, cooked from scratch, every day. And my mother wasn’t a SAHM.

I was in my 20s before I had a Chinese meal, think I first had pizza at 18/19 and was probably 21 when I first had an Indian.

Chips maybe once a month as a Friday treat. Kids got chips, mum n dad shared a large fish and chips. We all got scraps.

Didn't have Indian, Chinese pizza etc until I was an adult. Had my first McDonald's at 16.

This was 80's . I do remember have a birthday party At wimpy tho when I was about 8.

WaterWeasel · 19/03/2024 20:59

Fish and chips on holiday and then only once. I had a Wimpy burger once when I was a teenager and out with my older sister! Never had McDonalds in my life and never have takeaways of any description.
Love healthy home cooked food though.

artfuldodgerjack · 19/03/2024 21:15

Was a 80's baby. We used to have Indian on a Friday and Chinese on Saturday.

OnlyOneAdda · 19/03/2024 21:46

1983

Chinese most Fridays, and whenever we saw my "Aunty" & "Uncle" (good friends since NCT classes of first borns). Fish & Chips also maybe 6-10 times a year.

Never anything more adventurous.

Calmdown14 · 19/03/2024 21:56

Same age as you OP.

We had something from the chippy occasionally.

Macdonalds was a birthday treat. The only time it wasn't was if my mum had luncheon vouchers but then I had to share a burger and chips with my sister.

We went out to a Bernie Inn for the odd special birthday but could probably count total meals out (excluding chips on holiday) on one hand.

I do think some of the quality of life threads ignore the change in expectations regarding things like this (see also entertainment at the local pub working man's club, not weekends away and abroad hen dos).

DelilahBucket · 19/03/2024 21:59

Fish and chips were a really rare treat. We never ate out and my mum, now in her 70's, still has never had a takeaway. I think I went to a couple of McDonald's birthday parties.

Peaceandquietwithmydog · 19/03/2024 22:04

Born mid 60s . Very occasional fish and chips but my Mum was quite an adventurous cook for those days . Had regular curries, stir fry, bolognaise, pizza , burgers in a bun. Cannot remember when I first ever had a MacDonald etc . Not sure if it existed then . Do remember going to a wimpy bar with my dad occasionally.

Littleoxforddictionary · 19/03/2024 22:09

Fish and chips on holiday and then in about 1986 a pizza delivery place opened down the road. So American! You had to phone up and we would get pizza when my mum was away so that my dad didn't have to cook.

MadisonAvenue · 19/03/2024 22:17

Born in 1969.
We’d have fish and chips perhaps once a month or so. I remember when the first Chinese takeaway opened in our town and for our first takeaway we had chips, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. So adventurous. After that we usually just had chips from there, not often though, and they always came in a brown paper bag and had a really distinctive taste. They were so much nicer than the chips you get from Chinese takeaways now.

Didnt have a McDonalds until I was 15, and I wasn’t impressed. Didn’t try Indian food until a boyfriend took me to a restaurant when I was 16 (so not a takeaway) and I didn’t have a clue what to order.

DrCoconut · 19/03/2024 22:25

Grew up in the 80s. Takeaway was an extremely rare treat. Fish and chips a handful of times, mostly on trips to the seaside. Chinese twice in 18 years. I asked for one for my 18th birthday as it was that level of special. Pizza from a takeaway I got for the first time with my boyfriend when I was 18, at home we had supermarket ones. The general attitude was that takeaway was expensive, lazy and wasteful.

snowlady4 · 19/03/2024 22:33

Grew up in the 80s. Had the occasional chippy (which was a cheap meal then,) and a Chinese takeaway extremely rarely- I'd say once or twice a year. Never got a mcdonalds or pizza.. although I remember friends that went to mcdonalds all the time!
We did go out for meals sometimes, much more frequent than getting a takeaway.

Alonglongway · 19/03/2024 22:34

born in the 60s and moved from Ireland as a small kid. My parents were very serious about fresh home cooked food so we didn’t have takeaways ever. My dad opened a delicatessen in a then very working class part of London and our Friday night treat was whatever was going out of code. Pate and every type of cheese with my mum’s fresh scones. It wasn’t so bad!

echt · 19/03/2024 22:42

I grew up in the 60s and 70s and the only takeaway was fish and chips on a Friday for tea. Nothing else existed. I lived in a very working class town, so this was entirely normal. We never went out for a meal as on a low-income.

I didn't encounter takeaways until leaving university in the late 70s, when I'd have a Chinese takeaway sometimes.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 19/03/2024 22:45

I remember having a Chinese when Katrina and the waves won Eurovision, that was a big deal. Fish and chips sometimes. Born early 80s and still not into take aways.

MHMIL · 19/03/2024 22:54

Born mid 80s.

Had a takeaway maybe once a fortnight.

Chinese/Indian mainly. Once I was a teenager then pizza was more frequent too.

We'd also go to McDonald's once or twice a month. And the Harvester and Pizza Hut quite a lot.

Cant remember the last time we had a takeaway though. My DC rarely have them.

They do love to eat out though so that's our preference.
