Did you have many takeaways growing up?

I was born 81 and one of five and I think we were pretty poor. I remember having fish and chips occasionally and sometimes if parents went to the pub they would bring home chow mein and chips from the local Chinese.

I think it was my older siblings who introduced McDonald's and pizza when I was about 10 (I wasn't a fan haha). Thee seem to be multitudes more takeaway options now.

Chinese was mainly a birthday treat in the 70s. Fish and chips more often. I didn't get a takeaway McDonald's until I was probably in my teens. Do you remember sitting in Wimpy with a knife and fork?

lljkk · 19/03/2024 17:01

yes, born 1960s, but grew up outside UK.
Fam & Friends there still have restaurant meals or take away very often, even the poor ones.

WhateverMate · 19/03/2024 17:01

Also the youngest of 5 but born in the 70s.

We'd have something from the chip shop maybe once a fortnight, like sausage in batter and chips.

My older siblings also introduced Chinese and other takeaways towards the end of the 70s/early 80s, but my parents weren't fans.

Comedycook · 19/03/2024 17:01

I'm in my forties...so grew up in the 1980/90s. We got lots of takeaways...fish and chips, kebabs, Indian and my favourite was Chinese. Saturday night TV, gladiators, blind date, Noel's house party and a takeaway....great days! Maybe once a fortnight/once a month.

WhateverMate · 19/03/2024 17:02

Do you remember sitting in Wimpy with a knife and fork?

Yes @Hoglet70 we had a Wimpy on the high road but that was a massive treat, like for a birthday or something.

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 19/03/2024 17:03

I as born in 83 and don’t ever remember having takeaways unless we were on a caravan holiday when we would get something from the chip shop on one night.

We were quite poor. My friend came from a well off family and I remember having a Chinese takeaway at her house once and loving it!

DuchessNope · 19/03/2024 17:04

I was born late 70s one of 4. It was rare in our house. We used to get a Chinese on Christmas Eve and that was quite a big deal and very much part of the excitement! I think we got fish and chips occasionally and then we got more stuff later on when we were all teens. My parents had lots more money by the mid/ late 90s, they were pretty poor before then.

Hellocatshome · 19/03/2024 17:07

I was born in 83. Fish and chips only if we were on holiday at the seaside. No other takeaways ever. We never went to a McDonald's or similar until we were allowed to town without parents and we went with friends.

Bigcoatlady · 19/03/2024 17:10

One of three grew up in 80s.

We had an Indian takeaway once a year when family visited as a big treat. I don't think we ever had Chinese at home though we had it at an aunt's once and that was quite exciting. We had fish and chips on holiday in the summer. In my teens I remember having takeaway pizza at sleepovers but we never had it at home.

modgepodge · 19/03/2024 17:11

Mid 80s baby here, we had fish and chips at home once in a blue moon (couple of times a year maybe) and also if we went to the beach, again a few times a year. Remember having an Indian literally twice when I was a teenager. We weren’t super hard up but not super flush either. My dad still very rarely ever has a takeaway (and always fish and chips!) whereas I have one most weeks now 😬

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 19/03/2024 17:12

Very, very rarely - as in, once a year or less. My parents were really into healthy eating and cooking from scratch. But as soon as I was old enough to get pocket money, it pretty much all went on McDonald's, chippy and junk food.

I was born right at the end of '88.

Oakbeam · 19/03/2024 17:14

1960s

Fish and chips once in a blue moon. Almost always when we were on holiday.

Dartmoorcheffy · 19/03/2024 17:15

Born in 1969

Only takeaway we had was fish and chips about twice a year. If we went out for a day trip we took homemade beef paste and salad sandwiches (which I still make as it brings back childhood memories)

We would regularly get pies and ham salad muffins from the local bakery for lunch, and if we went to the market would get black pudding, or hot new potatoes.

But I didn't have a mcdonalds until my mid teens, and didn't have Chinese or Indian or kebab until I left home.

FortunataTagnips · 19/03/2024 17:15

I was born in ‘71. We had Chinese and Indian fairly frequently. Pizza didn’t become a thing for us until the late ‘80s.

Seeline · 19/03/2024 17:15

Born late 60s. Rarely had a takeaway - possibly once a year fish and chips when on our annual week holiday on the south coast. It wasn't until my teens that I had my first Chinese. Possibly a meal or two out a year at the local Bernie Inn.

Taytocrisps · 19/03/2024 17:16

I come from a big family so takeaways were expensive. We'd have fish and chips very occasionally. Or sometimes a hamburger and chips.

McDonalds was fairly new on the scene. I went for the first time with the girl guides (we got a tour of McDs and then ordered food) and I was boasting about it all week at school Blush. We didn't go as a family.

I'm not sure if there were any Chinese takeaways around but we (as a family) never had Chinese food. The first time I tasted it was at a friend's house in my teens. Her parents quite liked Chinese food and ordered from the Chinese from time to time.

I must have discovered pizza at some point, but we mainly had cheap supermarket frozen pizzas (we'd get a pack of five small round pizzas). Or we'd have those pizza breads - like mini baguettes with tomato sauce and cheese on them (see photo). But we never got pizza from a take away. Maybe we didn't have any pizzerias nearby or maybe my parents just didn't bother 'cos they didn't like pizzas themselves and we were happy with the cheap frozen ones.

Polominty · 19/03/2024 17:16

Born early 60’s we only had fish and chips and would have it with bread and butter to make it stretch a bit further. 1970 my aunt and uncle opened a cafe I thought I’d died and gone to heaven.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 19/03/2024 17:17

Born in 92 and had very occasional fish and chips. Maybe a McDonald's for a birthday

SirChenjins · 19/03/2024 17:17

Rarely - it just wasn’t a thing. Grew up in the 70s in a tiny village, no takeaway of any kind for miles.

Toomuch44 · 19/03/2024 17:17

My Dad used to take me swimming on a Friday evening - occasionally we'd pick up fish and chips on way back. I'm married now, we probably have about the same amount of takeaways, just likely to be a local cantonese takeway which is exceptional. Eating out was the occasional special birthday, so looking back a takeaway was something quite special.

stayathomer · 19/03/2024 17:18

We had a bag of chips every Friday night after we went to the library and McDonald’s for birthdays only!

EasterBunnny · 19/03/2024 17:19

Born late 60’s, I remember my parents waking me up one night and we all had a massive Chinese takeaway. I had fish and chips one year on a holiday.
We did eat out sometimes at Wimpy and Garfunkel’s.
I went to one of the first McDonald’s parties in the UK but then didn’t have it again for 11 years.

Noicant · 19/03/2024 17:20

80’s kid, occasionally fish and chips but nothing else, the odd restaurant visit (but that was rare).

needausername3 · 19/03/2024 17:20

We were all born in the 80s (3 siblings) and would get a takeaway I suppose around once a month, maybe slightly less. My Mum worked in restaurants so we ate out occasionally too thanks to staff discount but that was quite rare too.

myheadisaterribleplace · 19/03/2024 17:20

Born early 80s, we had fish and chips on pay day, so once a month and a couple of times a year when we went to the beach. I remember having my first McDonald's when I had a tooth removed as a treat for being brave, but don't remember ever having Chinese, Indian or pizza until late teens when I paid for it myself. We probably had McDonald's a couple of times a year, but this was considered a huge treat and always felt exciting.
