Did you have many takeaways growing up?

I was born 81 and one of five and I think we were pretty poor. I remember having fish and chips occasionally and sometimes if parents went to the pub they would bring home chow mein and chips from the local Chinese.

I think it was my older siblings who introduced McDonald's and pizza when I was about 10 (I wasn't a fan haha). Thee seem to be multitudes more takeaway options now.

We had fish & chips every fortnight after wed done the big shop at Fine Fare

We went away at Easter & had a chippy tea one night, a Chinese another night & a ready meal of our choice for night 3

Other than that Chinese takeaways were reserved for birthdays if we weren't going out for dinner

SirenSays · 19/03/2024 22:57

Never. Not until I was paying rent.

Fifthtimelucky · 19/03/2024 23:24

I don't think I had a single one as a child or teenager except that once a year when we went to visit grandparents we had fish and chips for one meal as a treat.

I was born in the early 1960s. Until about 1978, when a Chinese takeaway opened, there was only one takeaway in our town: a fish and chip shop that we never went to.

CharSiu · 20/03/2024 03:34

My Dad opened the first Chinese restaurant that also did take away back in the 1960’s in a seaside town. Everyone knew my Dad, such a gentleman. The food was kept warm in the bowls by being put on metal grills with little tea lights underneath.

yesmen · 20/03/2024 03:48

Very rare - maybe once or twice a year.

Mum intensely disliked fried foods, pop, biscuits and shop cakes.

She is still the same!

(born late '70s)

Gophering · 20/03/2024 05:44

Born in the 70s and we very very rarely had takeaway. Partly cost I think and partly that we usually ate meals cooked from scratch. We did have a treat of McDonald’s if we were out in town for the day or something and would go out for dinner as a family a few times a year but that was a real treat. My own family now is similar although my kids seem to order themselves takeaway which we would never have done as teens “in my day”.

Seacatt · 20/03/2024 05:50

We used to visit Granny on a Sunday and Dad always bought us all fish suppers to eat there.

We always ate them out of the paper wrapping. One time she had the remains on the floor (in the paper) for the cat to eat, when her Minister called round!

Poor Granny was so embarassed!

Justleaveitblankthen · 20/03/2024 06:14

1970'S, Poor.

A chippie meal a couple or more times a week.
Fish and chips was expensive, but chips & gravy was around 19p, including the tray & wooden fork.

Never had any other form of takeaway until I was an adult in relationships and can count on 1 hand how often I have had Indian or Chinese ever since.

Have Pizza takeaway once or twice a year as a birthday treat 😂

Tarquina · 20/03/2024 06:24

I'm 65. Never had a takeaway the whole 17 yrs I lived with my parents.

Twylitette · 20/03/2024 06:26

80s born - we only had fish and chips, mcdonalds for birthdays. I didnt get a chinese til well into my teens and it was a big treat. BUT, my mum was at home to cook.

inkblackheart · 20/03/2024 06:30

I’m 50. We would have fish and chips the night before we went on holiday because we would have eaten everything in the fridge before going and it was a treat.

Thats it.

Lulu1919 · 20/03/2024 06:31

I'm 55
Rare
Odd Chinese ...but was parents take away odd to I was allowed a little bit ...

pleasestoprainingplease · 20/03/2024 06:41

Born in the late 80's. I remember having chip shop in the school holidays after a day trip
out. Then I worked in a chip shop in my teens & I was allowed to take things home to the family after a friend night shift.

Chinese we'd have quite a lot. It was my parents favourite. Rarely had McDonald's & never had kfc or pizza. We'd be allowed kebab after a night out at a party on the walk home. Never really had Indian until late teens.

My own kids get a takeaway every Friday night. I feel like we're so much busier than I remember us being growing up. My kids have 4/5 clubs mon-Fri and sat and Sunday we spend most of the weekend at their sports too. It's so nice knowing at the end of a busy working week we don't have to cook and there' not much mess to deal with before the busy weekend of early starts. We rotate what we have now as each person in the family gets their week to choose. Normally kebab, McDonalds, pizza or chip shop. Chinese & Indian we have much less regular. Maybe 2-4 times a year just because of the price. Although it's my fav and would eat those everyday if I could 😅

Deathraystare · 20/03/2024 07:22

Yeah until Mum started working on a Saturday later on. Then every bloody Saturday they got Chinese (Cantonese). I hated it. The fatty meat, grease and sickly sweet sweet and sour. I still hate Cantonease to this very day and no longer eat meat.

midgetastic · 20/03/2024 07:28

Hardly ever

Fish and chips occasionally - like when we moved house or when mam painted tue living room

If we had a week holiday (in the uk ) ( I think I had a total of 6 holidays as a child ) we would eat out or get takeaways then

Grew up 70/80s

Elebag · 20/03/2024 07:32

Born in the mid 70's.
Occasional fish n chips. Domino pizza on Xmas eve in the 90's.

Burger King every Friday after swimming lessons. Used to make it last so I could get home and sit in front of Roseanne eating my veggie bean burger.

Emmerald · 20/03/2024 07:53

Born 1968, I have 3 siblings.
We had fish and chips once a fortnight on a Friday and that was it! I had my first McDonald's when I was 17. I'd had Wimpy when I was about 13 because a friend's mum occasionally gave us her luncheon vouchers to use there. I do remember having my first Chinese meal with the Brownie & Guide leaders when I was around 13, too as a thank you because I helped out with the younger girls, and my mother telling me that Chinese food is all rice and you've got to eat it with chopsticks so I was dreading it, tbh. I was very pleasantly surprised how lovely it was!

I got home and my mother had made me a cheese sandwich as "you'll be starving after eating nothing much" 🙄

Mouse82 · 20/03/2024 07:56

Every Friday night. Growing up on the farm it was local fish and chips and when we moved to the city, it was pizza hut, kfc and things like that.

Runnerduck34 · 20/03/2024 08:16

I was born early 70s.
Growing up the only takeaway we had was very occasional fish and chips.
Didn't eat in restaurants either apart from at the Wimpy for occasional birthday treat

medianewbie · 20/03/2024 09:18

Born 1968. Poor. I was weekly sent for Chips but nothing with them, & told to ask for 'scratchings' (little strips of waste batter they scoop out of the fryer) to make a bigger bag as they were free! We went for a Chinese meal once. No other restaurant/take away experience. I bought a McDonald's aged 15 when it opened in my city.

TheFluffiestCat · 20/03/2024 09:34

Born 1980. When I was very little and my parents were still together, they would often have an Indian takeaway at the weekend. I'd go with Dad to collect it and watch the goldfish in the tank while he chatted to Mr Chaudhury for ages.

After mum and dad split up, it was only once in a blue moon, and then more likely Chinese. Sometimes we'd have an M&S ready meal curry on a Saturday night. We weren't poor, but Mum didn't earn much and had to be careful.

When I got to university, I was astonished by people ordering takeaways casually and regularly. I couldn't afford it, beyond the occasional bag of chips. I'd never ordered a pizza until I was 21.

Now we love a takeaway and probably have one every couple of weeks, but it's the first thing to go if we have to cut back.

BarrelOfOtters · 20/03/2024 09:50

We had very few takeaways (born 1960s) the odd fish and chips. But as soon as Marks and Spencers started doing ready meals - late 70s - my mum was down there filling up the trolley. She'd had enough of cooking for 4 and working full time and that was her way of dealing with it.

polkadot24 · 20/03/2024 10:03

90s child. Not a good childhood and not alot of money. We never went to a pub or restaurant, not til I took myself at 16. We didn't even go to a mc donalds or cafe. Food wasn't bought when we went out, it wasn't taken with us either so had to wait hours for a drink or food, there was no snack either, meals only. Terrible ones! We had chippy of we were at the seaside every other year or once or twice a year at home.

Goldenbear · 20/03/2024 10:25

Grew up 80/90s, yes but not frequently, we had quite a bit of choice as in London so mostly Chinese or Thai. We only had fish and chips if visiting the seaside. We did eat out at Pizza Express but that was more likely to be birthday treat for me and my friends.

Elephantswillnever · 20/03/2024 10:28

Born in 79 sometimes got chips from chippie. Bought my first McDonald’s age 15 with paper round money.

I don’t think anyone I knew back then regularly got takeaway. No wonder we were all thinner!
