Hi,

I have 2 friends birthdays soon struggling for ideas ( done scarves , books ).

What would you like as a 50 year old lady (£20 max).
Ta

OP posts:
Attryn · 18/03/2024 22:47

I'm not quite 50 but I would welcome a good book (crime thriller), nice soap, hand cream, a bracelet or necklace, a gift card for a coffee shop.

I do not want candles, earrings, a scarf.

Anonymousemouses · 18/03/2024 22:53

I'm in my 50s and would hate anything for the garden, any plants, hand cream, etc.

I like gadgets - Alexa devices, devices to look in your ears, heart monitors.

I also like perfume (but it would have to be one I like, not a surprise).

As you can see by the wide variety of different answers, women in their 50s are not some homogenous group, who all like the same thing, same as women in their 20s like different things.

Ask your friends what they like, a few ideas, rather than disappointing them with generic stereotypes.

StringTheory1 · 18/03/2024 22:56

I’m not far off that age. I’d like:

  • A new trail running top,
  • Walking poles,
  • Small bottle of Jo Malone fragrance (one of the men’s ones),
  • New cordless drill,
  • Neal’s Yard Rose Geramium Bath Oil,
  • Really posh olives,
  • Bottle of smoked gin
  • Voucher for caving or pot-holing.

But not all 50 year old ‘ladies’ like the same things 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am a 55-year-old woman. I’d like wine and chocolate. I don’t know what your friends would like (but I’d bet a lot it’s not candles). How about a box of luxury brownies?

ODFOx · 18/03/2024 23:00

Unlike BeaRF75 I quite like being considered a lady (it happens rarely) but I'm in my late 50s and like books (or Waterstones or Amazon vouchers (which are more personal if you hint what you were thinking of buying)), l'Occitaine hand cream (any but the rose ones) as my knuckles split when I'm stressed, a vintage cookbook, anything quirky (especially wooden) for the garden, a delivery of curd tarts and fat rascals from Betty's (probably over budget),, or a kilo of Colston Bassett stilton.
Just the sort of luxury you wouldn't necessary buy just for yourself.

DappledThings · 18/03/2024 23:02

I would like a contribution to a charity or, if you completely insist on buying something, a book token. Not a book, I like to choose myself thanks.

This tells you nothing about what someone else wants.

MartineBIT · 18/03/2024 23:02

I’m nearly 50 and would like-

yoga bolster
new running top
book about Tudor gardens
cookbooks
plain beeswax candle
beautiful soap
really good olive oil
lovely notebook
poetry
calligraphy pens
walking socks
photo album

Would not like-

Big stinky candle
Booze
hand cream
scarf
tin of fucking biscuits

Or a coffee shop voucher or travel coffee mug.

There are very few things in these posts that I’d really like, which kind of illustrates the point that you can’t lump us together because of our age…

Zonder · 18/03/2024 23:04

If you got me a candle, soap or hand cream I'd assume you were regifting something you won't use.

Scampuss · 18/03/2024 23:04

With a budget of £20 I'd like some hand dyed sock yarn, please.

This plus either some gift biscuits or chocolates from Marks or some flowers or a pot plant

Just to add I'm 52 and wrote what I'd like to receive

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/03/2024 01:45

I would probably opt for a boots voucher and I could choose a couple of makeup items.

fantasmasgoria1 · 19/03/2024 01:49

Not too far off 50 and I would not want dainty jewellery, a scarf or cashmere socks. Crikey I would want a new pair of goth boots or something. Many gifts that involve dainty things, scarves and socks etc are things a 59 year old wanted in the past not nowadays.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/03/2024 02:18

Something posh like Clarins or Elemis

katscamel · 19/03/2024 05:04

I'll be 50 in a few months, live overseas but will be back for my birthday. Mist of my friends realise that anything needs to be able to fit in my case so unfortunately no alcohol, plants or flowers.
Food gifts are good, things I can't get here, like good cheese (i freeze it and put it in a freezer bag in my case), twiglets, marmite, sherbert dibdabs/fountains, etc.
Experiences to use while I'm back.... there's a jewellery making course I fancy but slightly more expensive, alpaca trekking, a voucher for a manicure etc, a night out with cocktails, earrings, Boots Voucher.

Wine.
Or gin.

I'm 59, I don't want anything dainty or scented (candles, soap, handcream etc, the bouquet of the wine is fine 😉)

Bjorkdidit · 19/03/2024 06:05

I'm 50 and would hate most of the things mentioned, but would love some of the others. OP you have no idea which just like I have no idea what your 50 YO friends might like.

I know that I don't want anything that I have to wear, use or permanently display in my home that I haven't chosen myself.

For £20, a bottle of fizz (I'm not fussy) and some flowers would be nice. Or some cheese and posh crackers to go with it.

ArghhWhatNext · 19/03/2024 06:08

I love how stroppy the women over fifty are about our homogeneity 😊. Because my reaction to the OP was exactly the same. I’d like: a couple of bare root roses from David Austin, or a nice bottle of red wine (not Prosecco), or for you to take me out for coffee and a sandwich plus a nice long walk and a chat together, or a new good novel - or maybe a nicely bound copy of a classic that you know I’ll enjoy.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/03/2024 06:10

I'm not quite 50 but not far off.

I love books, Theatre tokens, candles and violet creams. I also love scarves but not £20 ones. I would not appreciate alcohol as I don't drink or biscuits as they are just shopping. Afternoon tea voucher for the two of you is nice if you want to factor in spending time together.

This thread just shows we are all different, it needs to be personal to your friends.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 19/03/2024 06:18

I’m 50.

Book token, theatre voucher, something from Wild Womyn Workshop / Standing for Women / Birdy Rose / Women’s Rights Network websites, a cat toy or cat bed.

My ear piercings closed up years ago & candles or anything dainty would get regifted.

Exactly.
I would ask for a full body massage token, but that's a highly personalised preference. 😂

persisted · 19/03/2024 06:25

If you went to an Oxfam bookshop and bought 20 quids worth of books you thought I'd like and some chocolate I'd be delighted.

waitingforthedrain · 19/03/2024 06:26

A zimmer frame, false teeth and some "dainty" earrings! 🙄
