What would you like as a 50 year old lady (£20 max).

I would really appreciate any of the following: a book token, a plant or some bulbs for my garden, a bottle of posh gin or fizz, a bunch of flowers or a piece of the pottery I collect. Or just take me out for coffee and cake!

If you bought me the likes of hand cream or candles I'd think you don't know me at all.

I love earrings, clothes and perfume, but am super fussy about what I like. Ditto anything for the house. I'm a fussy bugger in general, really.

I’d like a coffee shop voucher, bunch of flowers, posh chocolates, M&S or Boots voucher, a good hand cream.

Lunch and drinks for £20? Where are you planning to go?

And the last time I bought a lipstick for less than that amount it dried out my lips for days …

@lancslass17 I’d suggest you don’t just pick any old random thing that can be had for £20 - or anything that’s likely to be in someone’s weekly Ocado delivery. That’s not a treat. Pick something for which £20 would be the luxury version (like a very fine paperback book). Decent (as in desirable) candles / perfume / yoga mats / bits of tech / nights out at cocktail bars generally cost multiples of that - and as you’ve seen, a large proportion of 50 year old women have very expensive tastes.

Edited

I'm not saying that would cover it but it might cover a decent pub lunch then we'd share the drinks.

Not sure what your experience with a crappy lipstick has to do with anything 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wonder if the OP’s coming back?

A woman of 50 is a Gen-Xer from the grunge era. please no "dainty" earrings for the "lady". Ffs.

This. It's like people who think old people in care homes want to sing songs from the war like Vera Lynn when they were actually adults in the 60s.

Why does it matter?

Maybe she had an idea and the gift is sorted now.
Maybe she didn't bother replying because of the amount of people trying to be offended at an innocent enough question.

I get you on the whole "fussy bugger" thing—I'm the same way. It's tough when people try to gift you stuff that just doesn't vibe with your style, which is why I'm all about personalized gifts. Have you heard of these custom couple mini blocks? These ones are especially adorable! You can get them made with your own faces on them, like a little caricature of you and your partner or a friend. It's such a unique touch, and it's guaranteed to make you smile every time you look at them. Here's the link if you're curious giftedstories.com/collections/custom-couple-mini-blocks . It's a great conversation starter, too. I know you said you're picky about clothes and perfume, but things like these can be personal, thoughtful, and not something you'd find just anywhere.

I’d like a waterproof map of the Silverdale area please.

crumpet · 17/05/2024 12:45

Not candles or tat. I have enough and I am also particular about the candles I would want.

Decent bottle of wine, Sancerre or the like.

Good consumables - Fortnums, or good deli - but not chocolate. Jam would be nice.

Nice hand cream - like the Kit Kemp ones at the moment

tickets to a local exhibition if there is something interesting on.

but yes, 50 year olds grew up in the 80s/early 90s. Not the 30s.

CurlewKate · 17/05/2024 18:55

Oh god-is this turning into a padded lap tray/lavender water/big button phone/nice scarf/interesting tea thread, is it?

CommeIlFaut · 17/05/2024 22:07

For twenty quid, I would like:

A gundog whistle 210.5
Oboe reeds - Kexun Ge (you’ll get 5p change)
Riding gloves (I’m always leaving them places)
Yoga socks
An African History of Africa by Zainab Badawi
Any unusual fiction you have enjoyed and think I might too

Failing those, a defect bottle of Pinot noir or Gewurtztraminer and some very dark chocolate.
