What would you like as a 50 year old lady (£20 max).

I'm another one with expensive tastes, so for that budget I'd like a bottle of Cava and a book off my Amazon wishlist, but ideally bought from an independent bookshop, in paperback.

There is at least a gathering consensus to avoid prosecco and candles. (I've ended up with a prosecco-scented candle somehow, which unfortunately has been lit. Will probably use it as a firelighter).

littleburn · 19/03/2024 06:35

I'm 50 next year. I just like what I like and I don't think it's substantially different from what I liked at 40 or 30 really. Have I now entered a new category where I'll only be gifted scarves and scented candles here on in??

Danceswithweasels · 19/03/2024 06:42

Not flowers, or chocolate (particularly not Thorntons) definitely not a candle or a scarf. Probably a book token, some Bamboo or Seasalt socks or a succulent house plant, ooh or a cheeseplant please.

Not too far off 50 and I would not want dainty jewellery, a scarf or cashmere socks. Crikey I would want a new pair of goth boots or something. Many gifts that involve dainty things, scarves and socks etc are things a 59 year old wanted in the past not nowadays.

Same...a foo fighters, the cure, siouxsie t shirt would do me or kvd eyeliner 🤘

Loubelle70 · 19/03/2024 06:48

I love candles gifted but im lucky that folks know i have an ottoman full now 🤣. I also like a scarf..not a super gran one lol.
But im not necessarily cheap...so for £20 id rather go cinema with said friend or theatre etc

Copen · 19/03/2024 06:49

I'm 54. Given the budget is £20 I'd be fine with a decent candle or chocolates.

If I was given 'dainty earrings' I'd assume the person had never clapped eyes on me in their life.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/03/2024 06:50

I'm 53. I don't like candles, dainty jewellery of any sort, and the "poshest" chocolate I like is Tony's. I was my face is soap and moisturise with Nivea and my skin looks great on it. Prosecco just goes to the next raffle. I know what toiletries and cosmetics work for me, and stick to them.

For £20 I'd like;
Gas for my Jetboil
Wool rich walking socks
Gym top
Trainer socks
Woolly beanie hat
Cinema vouchers for local independent
A good insulated water bottle

Lazery · 19/03/2024 06:58

I'd like a bottle of No.10 Tanqueray gin - over budget.

A John Lewis voucher

An Amazon voucher

No chocolates, dainty earrings, tat or crap that'll end up on Oliio or Vinted next week.

myheadisaterribleplace · 19/03/2024 06:59

Something personalised,.... maybe a cushion, a nice plaque, a cup, and then some chocolates too

Silverstar2 · 19/03/2024 07:01

Your post intimates that if you are in your 50's you are old. Well, as a woman in her 50's I accept I am not in the first flushes of youth anymore, but I like to think I am not that old either.

I go kickboxing several times a week, so would appreciate some new boxing gloves, or hand wraps. Maybe a PT session which they run at my gym. I also like reading and wine. Not adverse to handcream..........

I think what I am saying is that we are all very different, not just 'in our 50's'. As this thread has proved.

Good luck with your choice. If all else fails, an Amazon voucher covers most things.

Wastedagreatusername · 19/03/2024 07:08

As a ‘50 lady’ I actually find it really insulting that you seem to think I have lost all my personality, character or individuality but am now just a ‘50 lady’ so that randoms on the internet can tell you what I will like, as I am ‘50s lady’. If I were the person you ‘know’, what I would like for my birthday is for you to see me as as much of an individual person as you are. HTH.

Ps. I would hate the scented candle, ‘things for the garden’ or ‘dainty earrings’ suggested by the first poster.

Orangeandnavy · 19/03/2024 07:28

Just for balance I love a scented candle (soy or beeswax though) and dainty earrings. Scarves too but only natural fabrics which £20 won’t cover.
I would love anything from Polish Pottery as I collect it. L’occitane hand cream, anything cool with dinosaurs on as have always been obsessed with them.
My 50+ women friends get taken out for lunch though. We have enough stuff.

sunnylanding · 19/03/2024 08:04

It's difficult because women in their 50's are not a homogenous mass.

Personally, I like scented candles that smell like the sea, books, nice fine knit socks, gin. My preference would always be to have an experience though, so when it's my friends birthdays I tend to take them out for lunch/afternoon tea rather than spend the money on something they might not want.

Mrsjayy · 19/03/2024 08:11

Probably a bottle of nice wine or a voucher for Boots or M&S .

Newgirls · 19/03/2024 08:16

I’d like a new Essie nail varnish pls

Zonder · 19/03/2024 08:22

Ooh yes Boots or M&S. Perfect for those old ladies hitting 50.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 19/03/2024 08:24

I am 50s too. I hate gardening (we'll never tried it but I imagine I would),candles, anything smelly and chocs and wine for my birthday seems a boring choice.

I am hard to please though so I would prefer an Oliver Bonas gift card to choose something myself.

Mrsjayy · 19/03/2024 08:27

Zonder · 19/03/2024 08:22

She asked what I'd like I'm not sure why I'm getting grief so early on a Tuesday morning.

kinkyredboots · 19/03/2024 08:28

Pot plant
bottle of nice gin
pair of nice handmade mugs

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 19/03/2024 08:29

Since I get most of my toiletries online & don’t wear makeup I’d be a bit nonplussed with a Boots voucher tbh.

I suppose I could stock up on toothpaste.

TomeTome · 19/03/2024 08:32

I’d like a lot of profiteroles or a cream doughnut as big as my head. Possibly I should have some breakfast, I’m HUNGRY.

Mrsjayy · 19/03/2024 08:33

Posters need to relax nobody is giving you a Boots voucher 😀

Seeline · 19/03/2024 08:36

I'm mid -50s and it's my birthday in a couple of weeks. People keep asking what I want and I have no clue. Thought I'd look here for ideas.
The only thing mentioned that I thought 'ooh' was Lego. I haven't done Lego since my DS was about 10, 12 years ago, and I really miss it. I keep seeing those botanical sets being advertised but they are sooo expensive. My DH would think I'd gone mad....

Bjorkdidit · 19/03/2024 08:48

The Lego flowers are wonderful and a bit cheaper on Amazon (and sometimes Argos or Costco) @Seeline

Definitely a worthwhile present for a £40/50 budget, especially as they're what you want, which is the important part. Plus they'll last forever and give you pleasure every day. Ask for them and if anyone objects just smile and say 'they're what I'd like for my birthday'.

I got some on a whim a few years ago and a few of us at work did them together during tea breaks. They're on my desk and just about everyone who sees them says how cool they are.

Seeline · 19/03/2024 09:22

@Bjorkdidit your message really struck a chord. I think I am reluctant to ask for things I really want that can be seen as frivolous. I feel as though I should ask for things that others will approve of and see as useful. I need to think on this.
