@Freakinfraser PP hasn't posted insults - they have listed things that have actually happened. It may hurt to read it, but how does it lack credibility?

Absolutely.

Who knows what will happen. Even if the Tories don’t get a majority at the next GE, who’s to say they won’t secure a coalition arrangement with another party just as Cameron did with the Lib Dems in 2010?

Theres not a chance that the Tories will be anywhere near government after the next election. Hell, if their polling keeps plummeting the way it has been they'll be lucky to be the largest opposition party!

I will eat my hat if we don't have a labour majority government come the end of this year. (Unless Sunak desperately clings on till the last possible second before calling a GE in January)

Riverlee · 17/03/2024 10:43

I’ll be honest, I don’t know what she’s like as a politician.

However, I was impressed with her dignity and solemness and calmness when she did the official swearing in of Charles when he became king. Also, carrying that sword… !

Is that all it takes to be impressed?

Penny Mordaunt as PM
Riverlee · 17/03/2024 11:40

As I said, I was not commentating on her ability as an MP (or future pm), but how well she carried out her duties on those days, and yes, I was impressed with her then (as were many others).

However, I hope people do a bit more research and choose their local politician on their political track record, How they deal with local issues etc, and not how they performed on those two momentous days.

lurchersforever · 17/03/2024 11:43

It's really not the time to get hung up on local issues. The country is on its knees and globally it is also a time of crisis. It's not the time to obsess over someone campaigning to save their local leisure centre, while ignoring the values and policies of the party they belong to. I'd call that smallminded on this occasion.

Exasperatednow · 17/03/2024 11:44

They need to call an election. She can then see if she can get elected. Highly unlikely.

The longer they wait, the worse it will be. They are highly unlikely to do well in the local elections in May and then they lose all those councillors who they could use to campaign.

We need change and it isn't Penny Mordant

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 17/03/2024 11:56

Mordaunt's side have said that these rumours are a plot from the right to smear her, in the lead up to the post-election leadership contest, and tbh I think that's quite plausible.

Who the hell would want to take this job now? Mind you I guess the motivation is that you'd have "Prime Minister of a G7 nation" on your cv for the rest of your life, the thrill of real power, however briefly, and the accompanying pension. It's probably more attractive from some perspectives than being Leader of the Opposition for the next 5 years.

Talking of which, how long do we think Rishi will stay on as MP for Richmond after the next election?. It would be a very long 5 years for him if he stuck it out, although his Yorkshire house does look lovely.

KnittingAuntie · 17/03/2024 12:03

No way . . . we in Portsmouth have never forgiven her for wasting her maiden speech just so she could win a bet. We have long memories in Pompey. . . . . .

LlynTegid · 17/03/2024 12:05

I can imagine Penny Mordaunt being one of the two leadership candidates being put to the membership when the Tories choose a new leader. After the general election though.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/03/2024 12:07

Truss will have that as well. I don't think her brief tenure as PM (or Mordaunt's if this comes off) does or will fool anyone with their political impressiveness. In a few years time Truss is going to be nothing but a pub quiz question.

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/03/2024 12:08

ilovesooty · 17/03/2024 11:14

While I largely agree with your post, she was stitched up to get Liz Truss on the ballot for the membership.

Yep, Sunak knew PM would trounce him, so it was sorted so he'd be on the ballot with Truss. He still lost and Truss tanked our economy.

She was outlasted by a lettuce and Sunak eventually became PM.

The Tories are a fucking mess. The sooner we get rid of them, the sooner the country can begin to recover.

CruCru · 17/03/2024 12:08

NotDavidTennant · 17/03/2024 11:05

Why would she even want it? 6 months as PM and then a trouncing at the general election.

It would be good for her financially.

I think there’s some sort of financial benefit like a bumped up pension for life? 🤷‍♀️

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/03/2024 12:09

What?Confused

She did a speech about chickens and kept saying “cock” for a bet. Not sure if there’s been other such stupid behaviour regarding speeches.

lurchersforever · 17/03/2024 12:15

She's so dignified with a sword though...

KnittingAuntie · 17/03/2024 12:16

If you Google "Penny Mordaunt maiden speech" you'll see what she did. It was for a bet with officers in the Royal Naval Reserve mess I believe . . .

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/03/2024 12:18

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/penny-mordaunt-speech-parliament-bet-b2122671.html

it might seem trivial but she’s an urban MP. The suspicion is that no constituent of hers has asked her about chicken welfare. So she wasted parliamentary time on a made up speech due to a bet. When she could have been discussing stuff which actually affects her constituents. Just shows what a joke they think it is and how much contempt they hold ordinary people in.

Tory leadership hopeful repeatedly said ‘c**k’ in Commons speech after losing bet

Penny Mordaunt glorifies war - I'm from Portsmouth and this woman (not that Penny agrees with the word woman) would happily take us into third world war.
Please don't support Penny.

I also live in Portsmouth and second this.

Don't be fooled by the woman's exterior.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 17/03/2024 12:29

The article goes on to say that she thinks a leadership challenge pre-election would be insane and that she thinks this story has been got up to scupper her leadership chances post-election.

Fizbosshoes · 17/03/2024 12:47

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/03/2024 11:00

Yeah because that's an important qualification for a PM. Being able to hold a sword for hours.

Perhaps we should bring back jousting to decide who's PM

I guess it's no more or less ridiculous than some of the bizarre behaviour at the bullingdon club that has included 2 previous PMs....🤷‍♀️

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 17/03/2024 12:51

I think some Tory MPs have nicknamed her Pretty Dormant.

Severalwhippets · 17/03/2024 12:55

I like Penny a lot. Quite frankly the conservatives have nothing to lose at this point.
