How many rolls of kitchen paper do you use a week?

RainbowRedPanda · 12/03/2024 12:57

I was reading this guardian article about whether paper towels are eco friendly and it mentions a benchmark of a family of 4 getting through two rolls of kitchen paper a week.

That seems like an awful lot to me, we probably get through one a month.

What do people use to soak oil up from the frying pan for example? I use it for that as well.

Let it cool then tip into a bottle for recycling (our council will collect with food waste). If the pan is still really greasy I'll use a bit of scrumpled newspaper or a small rag and then just throw it out

Who has newspaper any more?

not using that much fat in the first place.
if it's fat that hardens let it cool so that you can scrape it off with a spoon. if it stays liquid poor it into a container that you would through out anyway (yoghurt pits with lids are good for this).

I always wonder about who they've asked for surveys like these or whether the results would stand up to statistical scrutiny as they must have asked extreme examples then extrapolated to the population as a whole.

It's like you often see reports stating something like 'the average family wastes £637 of food a year' which is about £12 a week.

We waste almost nothing, maybe a bit of veg or bread we didn't get round to using or freezing. So for the average amount wasted to be that high, some people must be throwing away bags of food each week.

dudsville · 13/03/2024 09:57

I'm not the biggest eco warrior out there. I believe it's governments and companies that prodice crap that should take responsibility for things like. Having said that, we don't own kitchen roll. I don't understand why a tea towel isn't sufficient. We have several tea towels and they just get washed a lot. SImilarly, plastic washing up sponges, why do these still exist when there are wonderful fabric ones, that work out soooooo much cheaper in the long run? We've had the same cloth sponges for a decade and they're still going strong.

We do, I enjoy reading it

JustFrustrated · 13/03/2024 10:12

None. Ever.

This is one of the reasons the planet is fucked.

TwigTheWonderKid · 13/03/2024 10:37

None. I've never found anything a reusable cloth couldn't do in its place.

LenaLamont · 13/03/2024 10:49

About one a month. Majority is used on cat-related grossness, a couple of sheets a week on resting poached eggs on (so no watery eggs and no fibres) or absorbing excess fat from bacon or other fried meat things.

We have 20 ikea facecloths to use for cleaning and spills. They need replacing every couple of years or so.

Pasadenadreaming · 13/03/2024 13:00

I get through far too much and reading the comments I'm not even sure why as we do use teatowels etc. I mostly blame DH as he's incredibly wasteful! DD also has nosebleeds fairly often and will grab whatever is nearest so can get through quite a lot then. I also find it better than tissues to put in a coat pocket as it doesn't get so shredded. I guess DD uses a fair bit when she's painting etc too. But I really feel we should be using a lot less!

MrsMiddleMother · 13/03/2024 16:32

What are they using it for?? We get through one maybe every 8 weeks but it's only really used to wipe out the grease/fat from pans after cooking. We use cleaning cloths and tissues/toilet roll for noses.

shadyboots2024 · 13/03/2024 18:03

What does everyone use on their windows for cleaning?
I wash mine down and dry with an old flannel then use glass cleaner spray but it needs kitchen roll to remove that. I tried a glass cloth but it didn't work as well and got quite smeary

This thread is a year old . What a random thread to jump on x

ClementinePancakes · 28/01/2025 18:25

We don’t use any - use a mix of jay cloths, tea towels, sponges and cotton napkins for most circumstances when one might use kitchen roll.

Jay cloths and sponges do get thrown away eventually but go through the washing machine a fair few times.
Tea towels and napkins have lasted decades so far.

henlake7 · 28/01/2025 18:32

I get through 2 or 3 a week.
Mainly due to having 15 and 16 yr old dogs in dodgy health who tend to have several accidents a day.
I don't think dog faeces and urine is a reusable cloth kind of situation!

MumChp · 28/01/2025 18:35

Wr can easily use 2 a week.

Often it is used instead of tissues at meals or instead of a plate.
I don't think it make any difference yo the enviroment tbh.

CrushingOnRubies · 28/01/2025 18:47

A roll lasts a couple of months here.

Although dog was poorly last week so we got through two rolls last week

Gettingonmygoat · 28/01/2025 18:52

I use old cut up t shirts, towels etc I have a small bag of the cloths behind the door and use them for spills, cleaning etc.

lastintheQ · 28/01/2025 18:55

0 - haven't bought it in years, we use washable cloths/rags

stargirl1701 · 28/01/2025 20:04

None. We switched to reusable a decade ago.

snowlady4 · 28/01/2025 20:04

We use one every week or upto two weeks. I don't buy it every time I go shopping.
