How many rolls of kitchen paper do you use a week?

RainbowRedPanda · 12/03/2024 12:57

I was reading this guardian article about whether paper towels are eco friendly and it mentions a benchmark of a family of 4 getting through two rolls of kitchen paper a week.

That seems like an awful lot to me, we probably get through one a month.

@SpringSprungALeak but what about when kids pee themselves? Or vom on a duvet? Surely then pee goes in the wash with the clothes? Or would you throw away?

BeretRaspberry · 12/03/2024 20:21

Probably 1 every week to 9 days. I use it for stain making stuff, like pasta sauce or gravy spills. I like to keep my dishcloths sparkling white and it helps. I tried the Swedish dish cloths but they ended up so grubby looking and I don’t like it.

I’ve tried to cut down usage and use reusable but it never works.

We get a box delivered from Who Gives a Crap every twelve weeks or so. I think there are 6 in a box.

None. I never buy it. I can’t think of anything I’d use it for.

I do use some, sparingly and use very few rolls- perhaps 1 large one per month. I use dishcloths and change them every couple of days. And never use wet wipes or wet loo roll- diabolical for the environment.

None, can't remember when I last used it

I can’t think of what I’d used it for at all. I’ve got cloths for everything.

I use one sheet a day to clear dried on food on the cat's plate.

scrivette · 12/03/2024 20:39

I don't ever buy it. Sometimes I use loo roll to mop up a small sauce spill from the floor but then I put it down the loo.

We just don’t have the storage space for that. It’s good stuff but it would rather ruin the aesthetic of our kitchen as it has to be kept out.

Ah, it goes in our loft by the loft door!

Caspianberg · 12/03/2024 20:46

Hardly any. Maybe 1 a year? I only really use for things like resting paint brush on and wiping oil based varnish or similar.

we just have cloths and wash. We have different colours for different things, the blue cloths are bathroom and toilet cleaning, white flannels are for Ds hand and face after meals etc. w have cloth napkins for mealtimes if needed, and pile of general cleaning cloths in kitchen for cleaning.

We used washable nappies for the machine have wee nappies and cloths in for two years, all washed at 60 and nappies looked as new clean after 2 years constant use when no longer needed. So I’m happy the cleaning cloths get clean enough after a 60 degree wash. We just have small plastic basket with lid next to washing machine we add the cloths in and wash every few days when a larger load

Federiica · 12/03/2024 20:48

I'm not sure what it is for. The adverts show it mopping up spills but I would use a cloth for that. I use washable cloths and I have lots of them. But apparently washing cloths is disgusting? I'm not sure why.

I've seen re-useable kitchen roll for sale which was cloths made into a roll by attaching press studs. I remain baffled by this. It was cloths on a roll. You could use cloths not on a roll. I think it was for people who had bought a kitchen roll holder but didn't want to part with it. I would rather re-purpose the kitchen roll holder into a hat or a spurtle, than buy special cloths on a roll. Or donate it to someone in desperate need of a kitchen roll holder.

Starlightstarbright3 · 12/03/2024 20:48

About one a month . Much more when childminding through Covid or when I had young babies as I liked to antibacterial then use kitchen roll to wipe

LuckyPeonies · 12/03/2024 20:48

None. We use rags cut from cotton clothing that is too worn to wear in public. They get washed (along with other laundry) when there is a pile, or discarded if they’ve been used to clean up nasty messes.

CrushingOnRubies · 12/03/2024 20:51

Get through one every 5 weeks or so.

It s reduced dramatically though in the autumn we got through one a week because we had a puppy who saw the kitchen floor as their personally toilet Easter Hmm so it was needed to mop everything up

Librarybooker · 12/03/2024 20:57

DH can get through 2 in a weekend. He wipes all surfaces with them, cannot use one sheet. I laugh at those claims about towels with great absorption, it would not make any difference to how it used the paper. Per week we can do 3-4.

IWanderedLonely · 12/03/2024 20:59

None. I have lots of old cloths - if it's something really grim I bin them, otherwise wash and re-use.

PickAChew · 12/03/2024 21:06

About 2 a month. Mostly used for wiping up grease and oil.

rlbjsf · 12/03/2024 21:14

1-2 a week. When I wash my hands before prepping formula I use it to dry them, figure it's a bit more sanitary than a tea towel thats been used on dishes etc.

Also use it for the various spillages that inevitably occur around the kitchen. And to polish the stainless steel hob and sink with baby oil.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/03/2024 21:14

I also begrudge the cost of them nowadays too! Those using 4 rolls must be the fictional 6 figure mumsnetters.

Hey, I'm a fictional 6 figure mumsnetter and I take months to use a single kitchen roll. But I had a mother who cut up our old pyjamas to make dusters. And cuts open squeezy tubes of handcream etc to get the last bits out. So I have frugality in my genes.

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 12/03/2024 13:02

1 every 6-8 weeks maybe. I use washable cloths for most things.

This

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 12/03/2024 21:27

None. I use Ecoegg bamboo reusable cloths.

bakewellbride · 12/03/2024 21:40

None! Family of 4 including a toddler and our home is clean and tidy. Haven't bought kitchen roll in not sure how many years, maybe 10. A total non-essential.

MonkeyPuddle · 12/03/2024 21:42

We done use it at all. But I do have about 16 tea towels. My washer is on most days with work and school uniforms, sports kits etc so it makes sense for me to wipe up spills with a tea towel
and sling it in the washer.

longtompot · 12/03/2024 22:26

1-2 a week. Used for cleaning up pet accidents, wiping down the table that the cat walks over (I hate cat fur on the washable sponge), cleaning the bathrooms, blowing my nose, soaking up oil from the roast potato baking tray etc, cleaning kitchen surfaces.
