How many rolls of kitchen paper do you use a week?

RainbowRedPanda · 12/03/2024 12:57

I was reading this guardian article about whether paper towels are eco friendly and it mentions a benchmark of a family of 4 getting through two rolls of kitchen paper a week.

That seems like an awful lot to me, we probably get through one a month.

1/2 a week here

BarrelOfOtters · 12/03/2024 14:24

Mostly use dischcloths that go on a 60 degree wash ....

Itisnearlyspring · 12/03/2024 14:24

They are obviously exaggerating as it is a calculation by an environmental charity (earth911.com) wanting to demonstrate the amount of paper towel that is wasted.

We use one of the big ones every 1-2 months.

@JustKeepSwimmingJust so would you use a dishcloth for wiping up something a bit grim like vomit, wash it with bed sheets then use it as a dishcloth?

if not what's your 'process' ??

gerteddy · 12/03/2024 14:25

Maybe 1 every 3-4wks. I have young kids so it's def gone up from when it was just 2 adults in the house.

2 a week is mental!

Blobfishy · 12/03/2024 14:26

1 a week probably. It would be 1 a month if our cat didn't wee on the floor every other day😐

RipleyGreen · 12/03/2024 14:28

About 1.5 a week. Regina Blitz. Only stuff that doesn’t make the ghastly quartz top in my kitchen smear.

That’s what the one a year is for: grim things like vomit, spillages of hot oil etc. Possibly this happens less often in my house?

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 12/03/2024 14:32

One lasts two or three weeks I reckon, maybe a month. We use it for washing pet bowls and wiping around areas I don't really want to use a cloth for. Also as napkins sometimes if we're having something very messy to eat.

I remember watching something like a Real Housewives thing once where they were using it for drying their hands on in the kitchen. That seems terribly wasteful.

FayCarew · 12/03/2024 14:34

About 1 a year, if that

MumChp · 12/03/2024 14:35

None. Don't see the need.

SageRosemary · 12/03/2024 14:35

There's just over half of the current one left, it's from the twin pack we have since before Christmas, has The Snowman on it so I guess two rolls would last well over 3 months, maybe 4 months. We compost them if possible after use.

I have several micro-fibre type cloths that get washed and re-used dozens of times.

2 adults and 2 late teens here.

thanks for your reply 😊

I just couldn't do that though. I couldn't wash a cloth that had been used to wipe up vomit (or whatever) with dishcloths and then reuse them as dishcloths. Not even if washed on 90°.

Icedoatlattelove · 12/03/2024 14:41

We don't use it. I use washable napkins and cloths. I agree that seems like a lot op.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 12/03/2024 14:42

None. It's not an essential item. We just just fabric cloths, which get washed when needed.

@JustKeepSwimmingJust

thank you for your reply too.

my Dad always said I ran my place like an operating theatre!!🤣

I'm just too much of a fuss pot. I can't wash dish cloths with clothes/bedding.

I don't have kids so not wiping vomit but I've got cats! I'd use loo roll or grab an old cloth which was ready for the bin and use that. I have a basket in the kitchen for the cloths and they get washed really hot together with nothing else.

Yes - cloths, sheets etc all go on a hot wash so they are perfectly clean after being washed.

The level of squeamishness that leads people to think cloths must be disposed of if used for something dirty is part of why our climate is fucked. There is no justification for something like a cloth being a disposable item.

HanaJane · 12/03/2024 14:46

One roll a month at most! I use reusable cloths for surfaces so kitchen roll is only for cleaning gross things like the floor after the cat has brought us in a "present", or for drink spillages

stripes92 · 12/03/2024 14:46

We probably get through 1-2 a month, depending on how many times the cat has vomited or dismembered a mouse on the floor and how many accidents the toddler has had.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 12/03/2024 14:47

Even scrubs used in an operating theatre, which get covered in literal blood and gore during an operation, get washed and reused.

Axx · 12/03/2024 14:48

None we don't buy it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/03/2024 14:58

One every couple of weeks.

Gettingonmygoat · 12/03/2024 15:05

One every few months.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/03/2024 15:08

None - I have loads of washable cloths.
