How many rolls of kitchen paper do you use a week?

RainbowRedPanda · 12/03/2024 12:57

I was reading this guardian article about whether paper towels are eco friendly and it mentions a benchmark of a family of 4 getting through two rolls of kitchen paper a week.

That seems like an awful lot to me, we probably get through one a month.

I think we get through a pack of two every month-or-so - we mainly use it for drying fish/meat before cooking, draining fatty food, wiping up emergency spills.

That's just a normal super market kitchen roll, the fancier ones last longer.

mitogoshi · 12/03/2024 13:26

But I do buy the cheap rolls from Lidl which are small, so perhaps every 3 months of the quality stuff!

BoohooWoohoo · 12/03/2024 13:26

One every 3 weeks ? I buy the supermarket own brand ones so not the ones with giant individual sheets or extra number of sheets.

If they had asked me I would have pushed the number up, only because my dh is obsessed with them.

I cleared out his car, in it I found 18 rolls of kitchen roll of various amount. Some were full rolls, some only had a few sheets left.

I also found 23 bottles of water of various sizes.

Every time he goes out in the car ( not that often ) he takes at least one of each, they never make it out of the car again.

frozendaisy · 12/03/2024 13:28

Only use kitchen roll when a cloth won't work
Family of 4 to compare.

One roll every 6 weeks maybe longer I don't really count that closely

Kpo58 · 12/03/2024 13:40

Maybe 1 roll per month? What do other people use to get the gunk out of the washing machine seals? I wouldn't want to then put a cloth with it back in the machine to wash.

My mil? She probably goes through about 1536 rolls per week. I don't know what she does with it all! 😱

None, it's not a thing we buy. I suspect the MN hive mind would declare our reusable cloths "grim". I round them up and chuck them in the washing machine every time I put a load of washing on.

Same, I have a huge stash of washable cloths I use for everything, never buy kitchen roll ever.

gingercat02 · 12/03/2024 13:44

I just checked (cos I'm sad). Last bought a 2 pack on 12 January and the second one is nearly finished, so about 1 a month

Edwoodparkfootie · 12/03/2024 13:45

About 1 every six weeks but I actively try not to use it and have lots of other washable cloths handy.

in France last month I saw half sheet rolls in the supermarket. We bought one, I’d say the sheets are about two thirds the size of a sheet of my normal roll at home but I wondered if it would catch on in the UK.

App13 · 12/03/2024 13:46

1 every 2 months but with Plenty's half sheets i think itll stretch even further now!

FindANewFavouritePlace · 12/03/2024 13:50

We 2 most weeks. Really useful for food, spills and for all our animals. We use Blitz as its better than anything else imo.

Meadowfinch · 12/03/2024 13:53

None, I don't buy it.

I have cotton dish clothes, one per day, that goes in the washing machine in the evening. Ten dishcloths (£4) usually last about 6 months.

FindANewFavouritePlace · 12/03/2024 13:58

That should say,

We use 2 most weeks.

JuniperJanet · 12/03/2024 14:10

None, I use cloths and wash them.

SpringSprungALeak · 12/03/2024 14:10

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 12/03/2024 13:02

One a year, maybe? Mostly use dishcloths that go in the washing machine with the sheets

@JustKeepSwimmingJust so would you use a dishcloth for wiping up something a bit grim like vomit, wash it with bed sheets then use it as a dishcloth?

if not what's your 'process' ??

BarbaricPeach · 12/03/2024 14:12

Maybe two a year? We have reusable cloths that we use for everything except really big or gross messes. Two a week is mad!

bluecomputerscreen · 12/03/2024 14:12

family of 5
we use about 1 a month
use reusable cloths (aka flannels) for wiping off spills and general cleaning.
when dc were small we also used flannels to clean their faces & hands.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/03/2024 14:13

About 1 a month. We got washable napkins a couple of years ago and stopped using much kitchen towel at all.

@Meadowfinch

i use more than one a day just for the coffee machine 🤣🤣

if that's all you use, & if you wiped up something on the floor with it, after washing it, would you put it back in the dishcloths like? Or what?

when I was a kid, we had a 'floor cloth' (regularly changed, not just the one) that lived under the kitchen sink & was used for spills (on the floor). Then put back. I couldn't do that now, but I also wouldn't wash it with clothes, so I end up with several, but not enough to justify a wash if their own.

dishcloths & t towels get put in a bucket of laundry cleanse and washed when there are enough of them, I wouldn't wash them with clothes or bedding.

stayathomer · 12/03/2024 14:17

I never used to use it but now when we do I find it handy for eg putting sausages on to clear up the fat, wiping up really dirty spills that will absolutely wreck cloths or dog pee on an extremely bad day!!! We go through about one a month/six weeks. More probably at Christmas time. I’d guess some people must use it to clean surfaces if they’re using so much

user1492757084 · 12/03/2024 14:18

One or two per year. Take one on BBQs and have one in car.
Use washable cloths. I use good quality toilet paper though and use that if ever I need tissues.

Mudflaps · 12/03/2024 14:21

1 every 2 months or so. I've about 20 'dishcloths' that are kept under the sink, I use a few a day for wiping counter tops, tables etc. Any spills are wiped up with these cloths, the kitchen roll is only used if the spill/dirt is really greasy or exceptionally dirty and will need to be binned not washed. I've also got a bag of rags in the utility room which are old clothes/towels cut up, handy for when my husband is working on his (old/hobby) car or if the kitchen roll isn't strong enough but the job is very dirty, these aren't washed but dumped. The dishcloths are washed with towels on the sanitising cycle in the washing machine. Anyone got suggestion for a eco friendly version of the Magic Sponge? I like how effective they are but hate how they don't last.

oh they sound good. I've got a store of them at the moment, but I will look out for them when I next need to buy some.

I know I could cut them in half, but realistically that's not going to happen !!

I do have lots of reusable cloths. Dishcloths only get used for that.
I have dusters and microfibre cloths for house cleaning.
There is a basket of old cloths for mopping up dirty stuff or spot wiping the floor. I have only recently thrown away the last of the baby muslins that lived in that box.
Kitchen towels get used for cat sick, or putting cold fat, from the grill pan, etc, in the bin, that type of job.

inkblackheart · 12/03/2024 14:23

none. We haven't used it for about 10 years. we just use cloths.
