How many rolls of kitchen paper do you use a week?

I was reading this guardian article about whether paper towels are eco friendly and it mentions a benchmark of a family of 4 getting through two rolls of kitchen paper a week.

That seems like an awful lot to me, we probably get through one a month.

I don't have kids so not wiping vomit but I've got cats! I'd use loo roll or grab an old cloth which was ready for the bin and use that. I have a basket in the kitchen for the cloths and they get washed really hot together with nothing else.

@Icedoatlattelove

i live alone & no pets (but I do pet sit a lot), so I don't make a lot of mess, so I'd be waiting a ridiculously long time to justify a 'dirty cloths' wash. It's bad enough with dishcloths & t towels. I use loads a day, but it's still hard to make a wash worth it.

pinkspeakers · 12/03/2024 15:11

I probably buy a pack once a year. If that! We use dishcloths, teatowels, cloth napkins (occasionally paper napkins if a party). What do people use them for?
We don't buy paper tissues either.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 12/03/2024 15:13

I don't think I've ever bought kitchen roll in my life.

I keep them in a cupboard and mostly tend to forget they are there. I don't think my mother used them at all. They are just not something I "get". Washable dishcloth kept by the sink, used to wipe surfaces/table too. Rinse with hot water and hang back over sink. Put in washing basket in utility every few days. When we had kids Surely much more effective at wiping up than using paper??

But you can wash dirty cloths with any other item that goes on a hot wash? Why would you need to wash them completely separately, they all come out of the wash clean.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 12/03/2024 15:17

Not sure.
Probably 2 or 3 a month.
Have a dog and she regularly slops water out her bowl or there's paw prints.
Or someone spills something.
Soaking up grease like when you cook bacon.
We don't have napkins at the table during dinner so use kitchen towel if necessary.
Used for noses if no one's bothered to replace the empty box of tissues.

How often are people wiping up vomit? Can't remember the last time we had any vomit that wasn't in the toilet!

pinkspeakers · 12/03/2024 15:21

I just couldn't do that though. I couldn't wash a cloth that had been used to wipe up vomit (or whatever) with dishcloths and then reuse them as dishcloths.

I'd use a bathroom/general) cleaning cloth for that (same as dishcloths, but a different colour). Though it's probably not strictly necessary if washed hot. What do you use to clean the bathroom with? Couldn't you wipe up vomit with that? Or is that all disposables too?

We had very sicky cats growing up. I'd always use kitchen paper to clean that up so we got through more.

I just remembered I was once living in a house share and the landlord "treated" us to a pack of kitchen paper. It was gone within a week! All used by one guy lol. I never did find out what he used it for.

Nice to see the guardians "2 per week" doesn't seem accurate.

citrinetrilogy · 12/03/2024 15:24

One every 2-3 weeks, maybe longer.

The only time we get through it is if one of the cats has had a major digestive failure on the carpet. There's no way I'm using my cloths for that!!

Chypre · 12/03/2024 15:25

More like 1 roll a month, but I mostly use microfibre ones for the cleaning, and ordinary towel for the hands. Paper towels are for quick touch-ups, random spills and messes, drying washed fruits etc.

WAGGINGTONGUE · 12/03/2024 15:25

I use about 4 a week😳

OnceinaMinion · 12/03/2024 15:29

One every 4-6 weeks. I only really use it for something that needs to be put in the bin (stray wet cat food), if it’s for wiping then a washable wipe.
My MIL would use 2-4 rolls a week. She wouldn’t eat anything without a piece of kitchen roll in her hand, even a banana (then throw the clean kitchen roll away).

Roundaboot · 12/03/2024 15:35

I haven't bought any for years. I cut up old clothes for rags and use those for mopping up spills etc. If I'm mopping up something really grim, like cat sick, or using them to soak up oil, then I'll just chuck them out but usually they go in a bucket and in with the towels on a hot wash.

HoggyDunlop · 12/03/2024 15:36

I will buck the trend on here and say we use 2-3 rolls per week, as a household with young children and many pets. I use cloths for cleaning (have about 50!) but kitchen roll is for jobs i wouldn't use cloths for. E.g. elderly cat toilet accidents, dog vomit, etc. Often have a roll in the car for last minute cleaning of kids who have absent minded smeared snot all over their faces too. We'd probably use 1 roll per week less if husband knew how to clean properly but alas that's the price of his contribution to household cleaning and its not a hill I'm willing to die on.

Even scrubs used in an operating theatre, which get covered in literal blood and gore during an operation, get washed and reused.

@TarantinoIsAMisogynist

calm down dear!!

scrubs don't get washed with dishcloths, nor do they get used to wash dishes

i don't think s cloth that's been used to wipe up pee/vomit belongs in a wash with my clothes. If you're happy to wash your clothes with pee/vomit then you crack on.

There speaks someone that does not have kittens. Ours are discovering what is good and not good to eat. Though why they persevere with slugs I have no idea. Cleaning up vomited slug is up there with my worst experiences and it’s far too frequent at the moment 🤢

BarrelOfOtters · 12/03/2024 15:51

@TarantinoIsAMisogynist so do you do your kitchen dishcloths on a separate hot wash?

I tend to put all the whites through on a hot wash - sheets, towels, dishcloths, face cloths, tea towels....

I didn't say with clothes - I said a hot wash. So they get washed with towels, bedding, dishcloths, tea towels etc. in a hot wash.

A cloth that has been through a hot wash will be clean, regardless of what you have used it for previously.

I mean, surely you use cloths to clean the bathroom/toilet and other jobs like that? Those cloths are disgusting too - but they're fine once they have been through a hot wash.

No. I put them in a hot wash with the other things that need washing at high temps (basically the things in your list).

When it comes out of the wash, it's all clean provided you used a high enough temp, so there is no hygiene issue there.

I’ve never bought kitchen roll, never did figure out what it’s intended purpose was … same as muslins when the DC were little, so many people deem them essential but I never figured out essential for what 🤔

Growlybear83 · 12/03/2024 16:14

Two of us use a roll a month but when my daughter is home, we get through one a week.

If you had a baby with reflux, muslins were a godsend for mopping up sick. We had loads. As I said the last one gave up recently. Reflux baby is nearly 16.

Perzival · 12/03/2024 16:16

3-4 a week 🤷‍♀️
