When was the last time you cooked a roast dinner?

I think it was Christmas Day for me!

I used to cook the family a roast dinner every Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now it’s just me and a teen dc at home and they are really fussy and it’s a lot of food for two if you do a joint and all the works. I like leftovers the next day but they don’t.

Anyway maybe it’s because it’s Mother’s Day, I just thought I’d love a roast now. It’s too busy to go out so I will make the effort to cook next weekend instead. Are you someone who cooks every Sunday or rarely like me?

I last cooked one at christmas about four years ago!

Last ate one yesterday, courtesy of DP. That man does REMARKABLE things with a roast potato 😁

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/03/2024 18:58

Last Sunday, roast chicken, roast potatoes, etc. I honestly don’t find it a big deal at all, but then dh (who doesn’t cook) always does all the clearing up/loading the dishwasher.

Petrine · 10/03/2024 18:59

I cook a roast every Sunday. I don’t find it a chore and my family enjoy it. We had roast beef today.

We love a roast, and you can mix it up so many ways.
Once or twice a week here.

I don't think it's a big deal I just think it's boring to eat the same thing every week when there are so many amazing dishes to eat

And don't get me started on people who have a roast when abroad!

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 10/03/2024 19:03

My husband cooks one nearly every weekend. He's a great cook, but I'm not that bothered about roast dinners. Sometimes I would rather just have a sandwich and crack on with doing something interesting, but after many, many years together I have realised that Roast On A Sunday has some sort of sacrosanct meaning for him, left over from childhood, so I will just go along with it, if it keeps the dear man happy. He's one of those lovely husbands you never hear about on MN, and if eating roast potatoes is all I have to do to maintain marital harmony, then I guess I can do that.

Christmas day. I usually do two or three roasts a year.

Same. When I was first married, I did a roast every Sunday because that's what I thought you had to do, being brought up that way. After several years of this, my DH asked why and I thought, Yes - why? SO much washing up afterwards! Now we have all sorts of different things and when we do have a roast, appreciate it much more. I feel liberated!

I don’t make one every week, and we do eat all sorts. Dh would very happily eat it if I did, though.

Tittyfilarious · 10/03/2024 19:08

I cooked 1 today, I do 1 most Sundays

SameSameButDeliverance · 10/03/2024 19:09

I roasted a chicken today (I do one every week - means I’ve got meals half prepped for the week ahead) but did it with mushrooms roasted in garlic, spinach, puy lentils, tarragon and crème fraiche (it’s a Jamie O ‘provencal’ recipe). It was bloody delicious and only one pan for the dishwasher!

SpringLobelia · 10/03/2024 19:09

Last sunday. I generally do every Sunday. I would have done so today but everyone wanted takeaway.

I love a roast.

BananaLlama123 · 10/03/2024 19:11

At least a couple of years. I am a poor indifferent cook. Luckily DH enjoys cooking and does about 1 every 6 weeks

lifeisawillow3 · 10/03/2024 19:11

Last Sunday

Kitkat1523 · 10/03/2024 19:14

My DP and SIL just cooked one for me, my Mum and my DD ….2 of my GD also here …..it’s my first one this year

TammyJones · 10/03/2024 19:16

Couple of hours ago and it was delicious.
At £15 a pop I thought start doing my own.

fridaynightdinner12346 · 10/03/2024 19:21

Not actually done one in a few weeks now as been busy Sundays; but usually do one every week. Had a carvery last Sunday which was great, but missed homemade one so will do a mid week one instead this week.

Needmorelego · 10/03/2024 19:31

Never in my 48 years.
I don't like "roast dinner".
My husband cooks one regularly. I don't eat it though.
Out of curiosity - people that do always cook one on a Sunday or whatever - is it actually all about the roast for you or the "Sunday lunch". If it's "Sunday lunch" do you do other meals like lasagne or something.
Which bit is most important to you - the actual food or the everyone having lunch together?

We were laughing about this today because our adult DC took me and DH out for a Mother's Day carvery, and we realised DH was looking forward to it more than me because he wouldn't have to cook and wash up!

He cooks a roast every Sunday and has done for about 14 years, so that was when I last cooked one and gladly handed over the baton.

IWanderedLonely · 10/03/2024 19:34

On Monday. I make one most weeks but hardly ever on a Sunday

bananamum13 · 10/03/2024 19:36

I love a roast dinner so tend to do one most weeks, not always on a Sunday though.
Even when it was just me & DD I would make one as it would also do us for the next couple of dinners too.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 10/03/2024 19:36

Not this year, maybe last autumn. My husband does most of the cooking, he does a roast every couple of weeks usually. I can and do cook, I just prefer not to.

Madcats · 10/03/2024 19:38

3 weekends out of 4, at a guess. There is usually one of us at home to oversee cooking for a couple of hours.

The meat leftovers appear in other 'guises during the week.

We seem to be getting busy in the run up to Easter at weekends/evenings so I've abandoned them for a few weeks.

PurpleSky09 · 10/03/2024 19:39

We tend to have a roast every Sunday. It's my favourite meal!

NahNeedsGarlic · 10/03/2024 19:44
