When was the last time you cooked a roast dinner?

I think it was Christmas Day for me!

I used to cook the family a roast dinner every Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now it’s just me and a teen dc at home and they are really fussy and it’s a lot of food for two if you do a joint and all the works. I like leftovers the next day but they don’t.

Anyway maybe it’s because it’s Mother’s Day, I just thought I’d love a roast now. It’s too busy to go out so I will make the effort to cook next weekend instead. Are you someone who cooks every Sunday or rarely like me?

About a year ago - not something we particularly choose as a meal.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/03/2024 17:11

Most weeks when there's an r in the month. I put away the full roasts over summer though...

EternalSunshine01 · 10/03/2024 17:14

Oh so lots of people not cooking a roast every week. I think traditions have changed as I remember my mother cooking a big roast every single Sunday back in the days when there was nothing open on a Sunday. Then a homemade rice pudding or bread and butter pudding for dessert 😀. I would never make a pudding like that these days although they are very nice!

I generally always do 1 midweek and prob 2 out of 4 weekends.
Its one of the only dinners my dcs don't moan about eating.

SophiaElise · 10/03/2024 17:20

Never. I have several things I like cooking and regularly cook; a roast just doesn't feature.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2024 17:21

I didn't grow up with roasts every week, I think of them as a bit of a treat. I did one a couple of weeks ago just for me and DH, before that it was Christmas Day.

mydogisthebest · 10/03/2024 17:22

Usually me or DH will cook one every week but often not on a Sunday.

We are vegetarian but will have nut roast or something like goats cheese and red onion tarts. We both love roast dinners with lovely roast potatoes, home made yorkshires, carrots, peas, roast parsnips, mashed parsnips, brussels, green beans, cauliflower and stuffing

We often cook too much and then make bubble and squeak the next day

Yozzer87 · 10/03/2024 17:23

I normally do one every Sunday but I can't be bothered today. It's the washing up and combination of getting the kid's uniforms ready for the week that put me off.

Whattheduck · 10/03/2024 17:23

Every week if I don’t cook one on a Sunday then I’ll cook one on a Tuesday my day off
I Cooked a roast today

Klingfilm · 10/03/2024 17:24

Today, my 3 year old will eat everything I give her including 2 or 3 veg with no complaints so we have one almost every week!

IvysMum12 · 10/03/2024 17:25

Two days ago.

Cloudful · 10/03/2024 17:25

Christmas for us, DH isn’t a fan, he thinks it’s a lot of faff and mess for a mediocre meal. I love a roast and was saying on the way home from Mother’s Day visiting how I really fancied one today. I’m veggie so it’s really just roasties, veg and a Yorkshire pudding, I should really do it more often.

Blanketpolicy · 10/03/2024 17:30

We, dh, ds(19) and I, had an (expensive!) sirloin roast a couple of weeks ago. A bit of a treat, but still (just) cheaper than a takeaway and we all enjoyed it. If we do a roast we make sure it is a good quality cut of beef and it replaces a takeaway that week. Not as keen on pork or lamb.

We have a roast chicken as a easy mid week meal most weeks (summer and winter, just change the sides e.g. from sprouts to coleslaw!)

Proper roast joints we probably do every 3-5 weeks over the colder months only.

reallyneedwinerightnow · 10/03/2024 17:31

A few hours ago!

We generally have one every Sunday we're at home.

Icedoatlattelove · 10/03/2024 17:32

Today. Then maybe once since Christmas. We've been out twice I think for Sunday lunch since Christmas so that's reduced the at home cooking of a roast.

taxguru · 10/03/2024 17:32

Never. I absolutely hate them!

Inextremis · 10/03/2024 17:36

Almost ready to dish mine up - roast pork this week, with roast potatoes, braised cabbage and carrots, stuffing balls and broccoli. Loads of gravy, and apple sauce. I roast something most Sundays - maybe 5/6. Just the two of us.

PeopleAreWeird · 10/03/2024 17:37

The first Christmas in lockdown 😂

obsessedwithfreshbread · 10/03/2024 17:37

Done one since Xmas day , that was only because BIL came for the weekend and brought a joint with him as a hint!

Will do one at Easter as have SS26 and his BF staying for the weekend

Then it's nearly summer so will switch to outdoor cooking most weekends

I like going out for Sunday Lunch although I rarely choose the roast option, DH and DSC usually do though.

RandomMess · 10/03/2024 17:38

Decades as DH does them 💕

Marsayla · 10/03/2024 17:42

We prob have one a month or so but just a fairly easy one with pork or chicken. We eat it twice - slice up leftover meat and reheat in gravy for day 2.

It's mainly DH's thing - I would do it a lot less if it were me doing it all.

Minikievs · 10/03/2024 17:42

CurlewKate · 10/03/2024 17:43

I've never cooked one in my life. We do have one every couple of weeks though.

SameSameButDeliverance · 10/03/2024 17:43

I think I’ve done 3 or 4 since Christmas, so roughly fortnightly.

I live alone and am single but like the food and enjoy the cooking process. Always make my own gravy too (I make too much and freeze it).

chosenone · 10/03/2024 17:44

From October to April probably 2 a month. Or a variation of one. Toad in the hole with all the trimmings last week. I don’t do one all December so we enjoy Christmas dinner and then we all want them through January. I do like the switch to protein with new potatoes and salad in summer/BBQ and then the switch back to roasts in Autumn. I grew up with very over cooked bland roasts so it was amazing to learn how to cook my own!
