When was the last time you cooked a roast dinner?

I think it was Christmas Day for me!

I used to cook the family a roast dinner every Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now it’s just me and a teen dc at home and they are really fussy and it’s a lot of food for two if you do a joint and all the works. I like leftovers the next day but they don’t.

Anyway maybe it’s because it’s Mother’s Day, I just thought I’d love a roast now. It’s too busy to go out so I will make the effort to cook next weekend instead. Are you someone who cooks every Sunday or rarely like me?

A version of a roast dinner maybe once a week. No Yorkshire pudding normally and only one veg. We have an excellent local butcher that does offers on small joints of meat. Normally there is enough for dinner for four. Sandwiches or leftover for lunch or enough to make a cottage pie for the next day. I do tend to use the airfryer now too

Every weekend apart from high summer when it's too hot to put the oven on. Grew up with a roast for lunch every Sunday so we do the same. DH often cooks it but I did today.

Hardly ever, I love them but we have moved into a house with a horrible kitchen which doesn't excite me enough to cook in it.

We've just had a lovely piece of beef in the slow cooker; very tender, had it with roast potatoes and parsnips, M&S carrot & swede mash, M&S creamy mash, baby carrots cauliflower & sprouts. So not much washing up afterwards, plus nice leftovers for tomorrow. I've been feeling under the weather with a cold and a cough that won't quit, so DH did all the cooking. Very nice it was too. I'm hoping it'll help see off my cold.

Mumofyellows · 10/03/2024 17:49

Last weekend, usually do one 3 out of 4 weekends a month with a cottage pie the other week in winter. Once the weather is warm I'll switch up to a roast chicken with various salads, or roasted fish or med veg with halloumi. I do love a proper roast though so don't mind the prep!

Decafflatteplease · 10/03/2024 17:50

We have a roast most Sundays. I keep it really simple though. Either chicken or gammon in the slow cooker, or sausages in the oven. Frozen roasted potatoes, frozen Yorkshire's, ready prepped veg. Really easy!

IamaRevenant · 10/03/2024 17:52

Not often, maybe once every few months and then only usually because there was a nice leg of lamb or something in the reduced section! I like all the trimmings and for two people it can really add up once you factor in stuffing, yorkshires, cauliflower cheese, nice veg etc etc.

My mum and my sister both cook a roast for all the family on occasion and do so beautifully (we don't really host as our flat is so small - we do contribute/help though!). And we also go out for a pub roast (we have some amazing places around here that aren't massively expensive) every couple of months. So we have plenty of roasts, just not cooked by me!

MrsDilligaf · 10/03/2024 17:53

Once a month usually, we do like roast dinner but I generally only do them on weekends where we don't have much going on.

TrtseHkpr · 10/03/2024 17:56

I've never cooked one. I'm a veggie, but I just think they're highly overrated and too much work.

hellsBells246 · 10/03/2024 18:09

I often do a roast midweek instead. We're usually out doing something at weekends.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 10/03/2024 18:11

About 1998. DH does them and they are amazing.

mitogoshi · 10/03/2024 18:15

Couple of weeks ago, went out for one today

muddyford · 10/03/2024 18:15

Tomorrow! Would have been today but relations came round with cake and we haven't got room.

ohtowinthelottery · 10/03/2024 18:19

I very rarely cook a roast dinner as DH cooks at the weekend. However, when DH was away a couple of weekends ago and it was just me and DS, we had roasted pork chops and all the usual Sunday roast veg. Then DS away and DH cooked a small piece of beef with all the trimmings. Although with the price of a decent piece of meat to roast, I'm seriously considering it no longer being a weekly thing.

StopStartStop · 10/03/2024 18:20

Today. Before that, yesterday.
Elderly father won't eat much, but if presented with something familiar, he'll have a good go at it.

Birchvalley · 10/03/2024 18:20

We’ve had three roast dinners this week! It’s cold and dark still, we need gravy on our dinner. I love a roast because you just put it in the oven then sit down!

gingercat02 · 10/03/2024 18:22

Last Sunday, and the one before but not every week as DS would have a fit!
Usually once or twice a month. More in the winter. Love a Sunday BBQ in the summer

Growlybear83 · 10/03/2024 18:26

I probably cook a roast for my husband three weeks out of four. If I cook a chicken then I will eat some but I really hate other roast meat, and even more so roast potatoes, so I end up cooking something different for me.

Littlebitpsycho · 10/03/2024 18:26

I have never cooked one 🤦‍♀️ and never plan to either.

I love eating them, but I'm far too lazy to go through all that prep and cleaning up for 20 minutes of eating. I'd rather go to a decent pub and pay for one 🤣

ReliefComic · 10/03/2024 18:28

I do roasts for two, but not the works iyswim. If I’m cooking a chicken I cut it in half and freeze half. When I cook the half I’ll do things like marinade it in lemon, rosemary and garlic or maple syrup, mustard and thyme, the latter I’ll serve with roasted figs, cous cous and something green. Sometimes I’ll make dauphinois or truffle cauliflower and macaroni cheese to go with one.

medianewbie · 10/03/2024 18:29

At least once, often twice a week. A roast meat on Sunday, & a roast chicken on Wednesday. My kids have ASD & would reliably & enthusiastically eat roast dinners when growing up. We also eat a lot of pasta ...

Rainbowbrite83 · 10/03/2024 18:40

I'm being cooked one as we speak for Mother's Day 😊

decionsdecisions62 · 10/03/2024 18:40

This afternoon. Roast chicken. Yum.😋

Maggie93 · 10/03/2024 18:41

Last Sunday. We went out for Mother's Day today otherwise we'd have made one today. Smile

OolongTeaDrinker · 10/03/2024 18:53

About 3 hours ago - we have a roast meal once a week on average, but not always on a Sunday.
