I have a trans sibling. It is not easy or straightforward as I have said before. These human beings exist in reality , not just as some kind of fictionalised folk devil living in some people's heads.

There are few safe spaces on MN for a discussion about the real issues facing trans people, and their families. And certainly no trans woman would be welcome to join a discussion.

I find it depressing.

IClaudine · 16/03/2024 13:46

Solidarity with you both piggy and pointy.❤️

I thought I was going to explode with anger over Badenoch's tweet yesterday. It was purely designed to stir up hate. I ranted at my DH about it for a good 5 minutes.

I strongly suspect she is not the warrior for women's rights she pretend to be.

Me too. There used to be a trans poster but I suspect she's long gone (or very stealth) and there is a long suffering FtM poster who pops up on FWR to get pasted. It's very sad.

I was just telling DP that I keep getting called a TRA/trans apologist on here and he nearly wet himself laughing. He also didn't believe me that there's a "line" about the government being "captured" by stonewall. (He works in local government). I had to send him loads of links.

I'm hoping the gulf between online and real world experience is going to stop people getting so taken in by smear campaigns.

Incidentally while I was getting the links for DP i noticed the source of many of the stories was the omnipresent Policy Exchange (also the source of trans breastfeeding ridiculousness a couple of weeks ago and the "teachers transing children" nonsense🙄

There's clearly some very organised PR going on but I don't know who is paying for it or why.I would love a journalist to pick this up and research it because it absolutely stinks.

Do they really think we’re daft? That’s as blatant a bribe as you could possibly imagine, based on the erroneous assumption that we really want to see public services completely disappear.

Well 'right to buy' Council houses was a pretty blatant bribe from Thatcher. Of course there would have been nothing wrong with getting people 'on the bottom' of the property ladder if they'd ensured the funds went into building new social housing but they didn't, hence the current awful situation.

BIossomtoes · 16/03/2024 18:04

I know. It’s so, so depressing.

Yes

They couldn't offer it at the recent budget because we were in recession.

But by October public services will be running wonderfully and will actually benefit from having less long term investment.

Combine that with a big medal haul in Paris (one in the eye for the Frenchies), a few football wins (must be some footie over the summer right, just don't let the players or managers speak), a royal baby (if not actual baby at least start some rumours or suggest Harry is coming back to nick the crown or whatever) and Bada Bing!

We will have all forgotten about Austerity, Brexit, social care reform, levelling up, the justice system, the SEND system, our bankrupt councils, the Tory infighting and the racist donors.

Sure won't they be riding high after their success in the Council Elections in May?🤣🤣🤣

BIossomtoes · 16/03/2024 20:11

It seems that Reform has formed an alliance with Traditional Unionist Voices in N Ireland @TooBigForMyBoots. What are the implications of that?

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/03/2024 20:38

Beyond amplifying the voice of Reform over here I can't see any implications at all.

The Traditional Unionist Voice was formed by Jim Allister when he broke away from the DUP because they weren't right wing or Unionist enough. It's a fringe party with no MPs, only one seat in Stormount and a few councillors.

Jim's great craic in a crazy, right wing uncle kind of way, but ultimately the TUV exist to piss off the DUP.

BIossomtoes · 16/03/2024 20:57

Thank you. So it’s pretty meaningless really. Makes you wonder why they bothered.

BIossomtoes · 16/03/2024 21:29

Looks like he really, really wants to lose the election he’s so determined to keep us waiting for.

DuncinToffee · 16/03/2024 21:29

Nothing fishy here either, ex PM Johnson

https://x.com/Gabriel_Pogrund/status/1769091380205273226?s=20

EXCLUSIVE Boris Johnson brought the founder of a Mayfair hedge fund to his secret meeting with Nicolás Maduro

Ex-PM is paid consultant to Merlyn Advisors, which covered cost of the trip

It stands to gain from improved relations bw West and Venezuela

Last week we revealed Johnson met Maduro

Yesterday, as mentioned in our piece, the FT's @mj_stott @cynthiao & co revealed Maarten Petermann arranged trip

Today, we report he was there, in the room. And that Johnson has been engaged as a consultant for his firm

The Tories care about women and children.

Honestly, I don't care if a trans woman is in the John Lewis Ladies with me. I really don't. Or a trans man. Or even a gay man who feels unsafe in the men's. I do care about this. I feel like crying:

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2024/mar/16/desperate-neglect-teachers-washing-clothes-and-finding-beds-as-poverty-grips-englands-schools

I read this last night and it broke my heart. I live in the North West, this article rings true for so many kids in my area. When i hear people spouting off about how the Tories 'know what a woman is' I always think yeah, they know what one is, they are the ones they've been routinely punishing for the last 14 years. But tell me again how they 'care about women and children'.

Saucery · 17/03/2024 08:28

I do care very much about sharing female only spaces with biological men. I care for the women and girls for whom that would reduce options.
I don’t believe the Tories care about the issue beyond using it to get votes. They have had 14 years to do something about it.

IMO Johnson has always been for sale - it's just a lot more obvious now.

Sunak flies to Leeds for a private tour of Hester's office.

Nothing fishy about this at all.

This rather neatly dovetails with Johnson selling his consulting services.
2 sides of the same arse as 30p would say.

Doubling back to the Conservative election giveaway-

"• Early suggestions include a significant reduction in income tax, slashing stamp duty and council tax cuts that could mean those on the lowest income don’t pay"

Why consider this when this sort of thing is happening----

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: The ceiling of an intensive care ward collapsed onto a patient on life support & hours later a falling lift at another hospital broke a doctor’s leg in a 24-hour snapshot of Britain’s crumbling NHS. Read the full details: thetimes.co.uk/article/fallin… @thetimes

1 in 7 NHS buildings built before 1948.
Capital spending backlog of £11 billion.

Good thing we got those 40 new hospitals eh?

Zonder · 17/03/2024 09:59

Just saw this ad on MN and got really excited, thinking I'd missed a big announcement. Then remembered there are elections already then, just not the big one!

From what I understand, photo ID could backfire on the Tories if their aim is to gerrymander the elections. Which it probably is.

Younger people are less likely to have the ID needed but are probably more likely to vote by post.

Where as older people are more likely to vote in person and may not have the correct ID

This is the Government's dismissive response to the Electoral Commissions concerns about voter ID. If other countries did this in this way, we would question if it was a fair vote.

bombastix · 17/03/2024 10:16

Their budget proposal is bs. It takes a few months for people to feel the benefits of a tax cut and if they were serious then they should have done this at the last budget.

Campaigning on the effective prospect of serious cuts will not work.

I don't know who advises Rishi Sunak but they are hopeless. Strategically he was very clever in getting rid of Johnson so what the hell happened after that I have no idea. He is so weak and shows no political nous

BIossomtoes · 17/03/2024 10:20

I’m beginning to conclude that whoever’s advising Sunak right now wants to either bring him down personally or irreparably damage the Tories. Whichever it is they’re doing a magnificent job.

This clip might make you laugh on a dreary morning, or might do the opposite

https://x.com/implausibleblog/status/1769310088445976816?s=20

Trevor Phillips can't stop laughing after his interview with Mark Harper who repeatedly said 'we have a plan'

Harper had the audacity to say "things don't change overnight" - despite the Conservative party being in office for 14 years

Look into my eyes: we've got a plan,…
