James Heappey to stand down, 62 and counting

Why don't they all just quit now? It is so sleazy, taking all the money and the chances to make contacts and then stepping down.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2024 11:27

Well if Sam Coates is to be believed many of them have overextended themselves financially. Probably round about the same time some Tory commentators were suggesting we'd have Johnson as PM for a decade.

Rishi Sunak’s levelling up agenda is beset by an “absolutely astonishing” level of delay, and the government cannot give “any compelling examples” of what it has delivered, parliament’s spending watchdog has found.

Its almost as though it would be better if the money was just distributed to councils on a regular basis, rather than defunding them and giving a little bit back.

Putting to one side the general suffering of many of our UK's subjects (which I know is a big stretch), I'm invigorated by the popularity trends if there is an election a bit further away. The current trend is Labour steady, Refoam increasing and Conservatives decreasing. I see nothing to stop this trend, so by going long the Conservatives will be worse of come election time. Unless I'm missing some amazing policy to turn the country around that is about to be pulled from a hat. If so, it'll need to be a big hat.

I have the teensiest bit of sympathy for them because I don’t think anything less than a full clear out and completely new faces at every level can even begin to repair the damage they’ve done to their reputation. Even if they do have a ‘success’ in any way, from now on it’s immediately viewed through a lens of ‘that’s the least you could do, now what about this pile of shit over here’.

BIossomtoes · 15/03/2024 12:46

I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. All the damage is self inflicted.

I think it’s a real life demonstration of how much a tory mp’s morals are worth in GBP.

True, it is really a teeny tiny bit. Like watching a robber trying to escape a locked room. I think it’s the pathetic flailing.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/03/2024 13:12

I predict a summer of discontent. The Tories really are oblivious.

When Sunak thinks he has turned a corner, is what he has actually done is moved around the locked room to another impenetrable wall?

BIossomtoes · 15/03/2024 13:15

They’re in a maze really.

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/03/2024 13:36

It's interesting, almost as if they are on a one way road to a cliff edge. There are plenty of off ramps which they can use, but are choosing to ignore, and instead of slowing to change direction, they are getting faster.

The longer this farce goes on, the more damage they are doing to themselves. The trouble is they are taking the country down with them.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2024 13:39

There isn't a good date for them.

All they've got is the hope that something out of their control happens and somehow they can benefit from it.

AdamRyan · 15/03/2024 13:58

Oh BTW has anyone listened to Londongrad on Tortoise Media? Its pretty interesting in what it says about Britains current role in the world

bombastix · 15/03/2024 14:15

It is irresponsible because there lots of critical decisions piling up in government departments and Ministers are increasingly absent.

If this country has a crisis, how good would the reaction be? We have some idea after COVID- and we are in much weaker state in terms of the economy and leadership.

The only thing I would add to that image is them stuffing their pockets and smashing up anything left on their way over

Fully agree. It's weakening existing systems and our prospects month on month.
Heaven only knows where we will be by October.

tobee · 15/03/2024 14:47

Well the Tories don't have anything to lose leaving it as late as possible. The poor British people on the other hand....

Alexandra2001 · 15/03/2024 15:04

I'd bet on a January GE, holding out for as long as possible, power and the remote chance they'll have another crisis in which to rally the nation around.

The numbers of Tories standing down is quite something, younger MPs too, they'll want as long as possible to set up new careers and milk the system.

Cornettoninja · 15/03/2024 08:16

A former minister from the One Nation group of Tory centrist MPs said: “There’s a weakness in Number 10 which is a real concern. There’s a lack of political nous, a certain arrogance. The mood is fatalistic.”

I make that about 34 letters of no confidence in the PM that have gone in now. Too slow to get to the 53 mark… I wonder if Reform could see an opportunity with promising futures to current ministers and get the numbers up to force a vote of no confidence on the current government.

October is going to mean they have to dissolve parliament almost as soon as they get back from summer break isn’t it?

yay, another year of an incompetent government doing fuck all governing. Remember BJ’s summer of photo opportunities before he finally bit the bullet.

And they get a 5.5% payrise for their lack of---- efforts

me too. If it is they have their reasons for staying incognito but I hope they’re ok.
